Resumo: Our organization is a residential centre for 44 adults with intellectual disabilities.

The residents live in five residential untis in single rooms, every residential unit has a common living room / kitchen.
The most of the residents are working during the day. Only some of them, the retired residents, are in the residence during the day. Therefore the working hours for the member of staff are mainly in the afternoon and in the evening.

The residents live quite independently. The attendance and the support we offer them consist in: structuring life through conservation and creation of cultural and leiure time activities, activities concerning the household like washing the dishes, going shopping, cleaning and body cara. Every resident gets the support he/she needs always with the focus to learn to live independently.

In every residential unit work 4 professionals. In addition young men doing their civil service or young persons doing their voluntary social year are working in the Hilda-Heinemann-Haus. In total we employ 42 members of staff.

Perfil: • like to be in contact with people with disabilities
• bring along with them engagement, who are proactive, flexible and creative
• bring along empathy for the people with disabilities
• are interested in cultural activities
• are motivated to learn German also outside the language course (to be able to communicate with the people with disabilities)
• are motivated to develop intercultural projects together with other volunteers

The volunteers also need some physical strength because the people are mostly sitting in a wheelchair. Furthermore they need to know that the people are mostly severely ill, so that they have to deal with themes like dying and death.

Tarefas: • supporting the member of staff during their work
• supporting the residents going shopping, cooking washing the clothes, learning to use the public transport
• individual company of certain residents during leisure time activities
• company of small groups for leisure time activities (e.g. cultural activities, sport)
• equal experiences and common learning of disabled persons (as local experts) and European volunteers (as leisure time animate) • development of his or her own cultural projects according to the volunteer’s ideas and abilities (e.g. theatre project, making a film, organizing a day trip, internet project)
• working in one of the existing projects and bring in his or her own ideas All the activities focus on the resident to live as independently as possible.

Horário: Example for a week planning
Monday:
08:00 – 14:00: Café Olé: breakfast, playing board games, having lunch

Tuesday:
10:00 – 12:00: meeting of all evs volunteers of the BHH, planning of social activities and exchange of experiences
16:00 – 19:00: going to an indoor swimming pool with 1 resident

Wednesday:
08:00 – 13:30: Café Olé: breakfast, doing handicraft “window sticker”, having lunch
13:30 – 16:00: individual trip with two residents to the city of Hamburg

Thursday:
08:00 – 14:00: Café Olé: breakfast, baking cookies together, having lunch
15:00 – 16:00: EVS project “learning a foreign language”

Friday:
09:00 – 14:00: excursion “Going to the museum by underground”
19:00 – 22:00: disco evening for disabled people (occasionally)

Weekend
Free

Condições: The volunteer works 35 hours on 5 days per week. There is an entitlement to holidays for 2.5 days per month. Usually the volunteer works in the afternoon or evening hours.

Sometimes the volunteer will have to work at the weekend when residents want to visit activities like a concert or a festival. If there are activities with a disabled person at the weekend, the volunteer will be compensated with extra days off for his or her participation in these activities.

In addition the volunteer has the possibility to work for some hours or 1-2 days per week in other projects which are connected, like 2 ambulant assisted living communities, one community centre and an ambulant service.
