Resumo: The hosting organization is based in the North, in a community that has a lot of difficulties over the years e.g. drugs, alcohol, unemployment and poor education standards. The organization is a project working with young people at risk and have been doing this work since 1979 when the Northern Area Health Board, now the Health Service Executive (HSE), established it and is an integral element of the family support services in the North Inner City area.
The organization tries to cater for the physical and personal development, emotional and educational needs of young people between the ages of 11 and 18. The aim is to try and build the self-esteem and confidence of the young people through reflection on the personal choices and options open to them and encourage them to take responsibility of the choices they make in life.In recent years Ireland has become a rich country and as result many new immigrants from all over the world have come to live here. The project has responded to this by opening its doors to these young people. A lot of them are living and attending schools in the area.
Perfil: We like to have a volunteer who is open-minded towards our work, interested in working with young people at risk and be interested in learning. He/She should be work indepentent but also in a team.
Basic english skills are quite important for the work.
Tarefas: We would hope that the volunteer would become involved in our day-to-day programme. There will be a learning and practice period during which there will be a number of visits to different projects in the community so that he/she can get a feeling for the type of work. Also the volunteer get regulary supervision at the weekly staff meeting. There will be also support for leisure time and accommodation. He/she will work 5 days per week and will go on some residential sessions at the weekend.
A typical week:
Daily Drop-in from 12-2pm and 3-5pm. That means that the club is open to everyone.
Within this time there are some activities the volunteer can participate:
Monday: Football session, Basketball, Individual group, Homework-help session
Tuesday: Football session,Individual Group, Cooking Class
Wednesday: Football session, Individual Group, Homework-help session, Art class
Thursday: Individual Group, Breakdancing, Homework-help session, Guitar classes
Friday: Individual Group, Hio Hop dancing.
Note: The club is involved in some weekend work. There is one residential session every three mounths so the volunteer would need to work at least 2 of these sessions.
The host organisation will arrange for the volunteer to eat in the project or in a host family or will give them money to buy their own food and ensure they have access to facilities to prepare it. The volunteer will receive linguistic training throughout their stay, via a language school or private teacher arranged by the host organisation. The mentor will meet regulary with the volunteer to check on their progress and help any problems. The mentor will also ensure ongoing support for the volunteer. The volunteer will be given any training necessary for them to carry out their tasks. Attempts will be made to help the volunteer integrate into the local communtity. Volunteers will attend the on-arrival and midterm training by the National Agency or host organisation.
