Resumo: About 1/4 of our students come from other areas of the county, hence they live here during the week and go home in the weekends and holidays. They mainly live 2 or 3 together in small shared flats and look after themselves during the week..
The school is situated on the west coast of Norway, in the municipality with 6000 inhabitants. The centre of the municipality, with around 3000 people. With its location on the mouth of the Nordfjord, facing the North Sea, it is one of the most important fishing ports of Norway. The biggest industries are fisheries, a land-based fishing industry and wharves. Communications are fairly good, with boat connections to Bergen and Ålesund and buses three times a day to Oslo. There are airports in Florø and Sandane, about 1.5 hours away, and bigger airports in Bergen and Ålesund.
Our area has a mild climate, with quite a lot of rain, but on sunny days the scenery is a wonderful view, with its mixture of water and mountains. Norwegians are fond of nature, and many enjoy going for walks in the mountains. Quite a few have their own boats and love to go fishing or sailing when the weather is not too rough. In the summer, on lovely days, our local beaches swarm with sunbathing people, although the water temperature never reaches Mediterranean heights.
For those who love music, there are many choirs and brass bands in the area. The most important sport is football, and there are teams on different levels. But there are also possibilities for practising handball, floorball, athletics, gymnastics and dance.
Our school mirrors the local community by being the only maritime upper secondary school in the county of Sogn og Fjordane, drawing students from the whole county. We have our own fishing vessel and simulators for bigger ships and machine rooms in a brand new building. In the same building, at the sea front, we offer safety training for seamen and fishermen in our rescue centre, and we have four classes of post-secondary students in nautical subjects.
A regular school day starts at 8.30 a.m. and lasts until 3.45 p.m., except on Fridays, when school stops at 2 p.m.
Naturally, most of the school's staff of around 80 are teachers, as our main activity is education. However, we have some other employees like cleaners, janitors and office staff. We even have a youth coordinator, who is person working full time for the well-being of the students, offering different activities in between lessons and open school two evenings per week. She is also very much used as a conversation partner for students in need, and she visits students that are from other places than the hosting organization and are living for themselves during the week. Our volunteer will be closely connected to these activities.
Perfil: We are looking for a volunteer who has an open mind and likes working with young people. This person will be expected to show initiative and to help out with new ideas. It is an advantage that the volunteer takes interest in sports and can work independently after a period of introduction. He or she must be motivated to learn Norwegian, as this is crucial to function well in the project.
The volunteer should be able to cope with periods of rough weather.
All young people interested in our project will first send us an email. On the basis of the information received, the candidates will be contacted, first by mail and then by phone before we make the final decision. We have no special preferences concerning country of origin or gender.
We are open to working with any kind of Sending Organization.
Tarefas: The upper secondary school has acquired a broad experience in international activities during the last six decade. We have had projects financed by Leonardo da Vinci and Comenius, as well as national, often bilateral projects. We have (had) partner institutions in France, Scotland, Hungary, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden and Turkey. We have also hosted a language assistant from the Netherlands through the Comenius programme.
Throughout the last four years we have gained a lot of experience in hosting an EVS volunteer, and through the feedback from our volunteers, we feel confident that our organization is a good place to stay for a young person from another European country.
We see the good effects of impulses from other countries and cultures and would very much like to continue welcoming a European volunteer to our school. We are certain that both parts would benefit from this: our school, and especially the youth coordinator, would get new impulses and someone with fresh thoughts, and the volunteer would benefit from an openminded environment eager to make her or him feel welcome here. By being an integrated part of the school, the volunteer will go through a personal development, learning to adapt to a new cultural environment including both young people and adults. He or she will learn to initiate and plan different activities for the students and gain much insight into the way Norwegian young people think. The volunteer will gradually be more independent and learn to take responsibility, trying out ideas of his/her own.
The volunteer will be acting as an assistant to our youth coordinator for the benefit of our students. The following tasks may be included, but the details will be discussed with the volunteer upon arrival:
There are 50-70 lodging students each year, as some of our classes are made up of students from all over the county. The school is open two nights each week, where they can make use of computers, the library and sports facilities, and on Tuesdays hot food is served. Sometimes we arrange courses and special activities, like dancing courses, make-up courses and trips to the nearby alpine skiing facility. We would like the volunteer to help out with this and hopefully come up with some new ideas.
At school we have a canteen which serves healthy food and is the most important social meeting place outside the classrooms. In between lessons, many students gather there to talk, play pool or other games. There is also a piano and some guitars available. This will be an important place for the volunteer, as a player in the social environment, by just being there for the students, but also to a small extent behind the counter or in the kitchen when there are no students there. In our experience this is a good way to get to know people and feel safe in a new environment. It would be great if the volunteer can spend time here and present his/her own country with international evenings and maybe food from his/her own country.
Our school has very good sports facilities, and we would like our volunteer to help out in the weight room and possibly as an assistant instructor in one or more sports. This of course depends on the interests and skills of the volunteer.
The students' council is closely followed up by the school's youth coordinator, and we hope the volunteer will be able to help the council in its daily work, taking part in meetings and follow-up work. Once a year, one day is set aside for all students throughout Norway to collect money for a good cause in the third world. This is called "Operasjon Dagsverk", and means that each student gives a day's work for this project. In our experience it is hard to motivate our students for this, and we hope a young, enthusiastic person can help out with this.
Depending on the language skills and mother tongue of the volunteer, we hope she or he can take part in classes to give inspiration to the conversational activities and perhaps help out in project work. On average this may take up 2-3 hours a week. We have classes in English, German and French.
The volunteer will be seen as part of the school's staff and be included in planning sessions, social outings and information gatherings. He or she will be given a mentor beside the youth coordinator, and the volunteer will have to work closely with the youth coordinator, foreign language teachers and members of the students' council, to mention the most important.
We will of course fulfill our obligations towards the volunteer, by offering a place to live, free transportation etc., but also by providing instruction in the Norwegian language, both formally and informally. The formal language training will be done by joining the classes of Norwegian for foreigners, offered by the municipality.
The volunteer will have the opportunity to work extra hours one week in order to take more time off another week, so the workload will not necessarily be the same all the time. However, the average working time will be 35 hours a week, including Norwegian lessons. The volunteer will be free during school holidays. We want the volunteer to join us for nine months, i.e. from September to June.
