We are working together with ICJA Freiwilligenaustausch weltweit as coordinating organization and we would like to continue this coorperation. We are generally welcoming applications by all young people who are interested in working in our institution. In this context it is very important to us to supply as much information as possible to future volunteers for example through email contact etc. To assure that there is a profile description and also additional infortmation online.
Tarefas: Our project offers a lot of possibilities of the volunteer to include his/her own knowledge and skills and this way make, for example, his/her hobby accessible to the children.
On the compound, there are two main areas: first, the open area with a play house, a fireplace, a shelter construction site, a soccer field, a half pipe… and on the other hand the animal area. The animal area includes: rabbits, guinea pigs, three sheep and two ponies. In general, we are looking for two volunteers, whereof, one of them would have rather a focus on the animals and the other on the open field work. This means that looking at least one of the two volunteers should like to work with animals. Another main point is the cultural exchange between the children, the volunteer and our staff. Especially for children with such a diverse cultural background as ours here, it is a great experience to interact with someone who, may be, has similar problems like language restrictions. The integration of young, international volunteers in our project is therefore a great cultural enrichment and offers a range of new experiences and the children gain intercultural competences. Our institution is open for children living in the neighborhood. It is open from Tuesday to Saturday. Every day there are two or three employees working full time and in general a group of 3 or 4 volunteers and civilian servants. All tasks are shared equally in this group.
In general the volunteers work at least two working days per week from 10:00-18:00 p.m., and on the other working days from 12:00-13:00 p.m.
The other main task for both volunteers concern the work in the maintenance of the animals. This includes amongst other tasks:
Feeding the animals (about 20-30 min.) in the morning, before 8:30 a.m. for 3-4 days a week.
One Sunday shift per month: feeding the animals and cleaning the stable on a Sunday
Cleaning the stable together with the children and guide them while cleaning: in general three times per week (about 2h)
Furthermore, every member of the staff is equally responsible for the maintenance and the cleanliness of our facilities. These tasks will be distributed among the staff.
Organisation, coordination and the educational responsibility are, for each are in the hands of the full time employees. This means that the care and the maintenance of the individual areas are warranted from the professional staff, the volunteers can be in addition involved in theses individual areas. The volunteer gets the possibility to create and enrich the project by bringing in his own personality, ideas and culture.
Different areas and examples of work in the individual areas:
The Open area
SPORTS AND GAMES
e.g.: Assisting and inspiring the kids in games or on the football pitch and many other sports. Outdoor activities: Supporting the kids in constructing huts and showing them how to create a bond fire etc.
WORKSHOP/COMPUTERWORKSHOP: supporting the kids with their ideas to handle the new media and assist them in using the computers and the internet.
CREATIVITY AND HANDICRAFT : e.g. Cooking with the children, Handicraft…
The Animal area
Assistance by the maintenance of the animals together with the children, e.g. collective preparation of food, cleaning of the stable…
Teaching the children how to behave with the animals: e.g. feeding the rabbit, brushing the sheep, cleaning the horses…
Organizing collective actions with the children and the animals: e.g. Accompanying a so called "animal-trip" with sheep in the park
While our fulltime staff is mainly occupied with organizing, guiding and structuring tasks, the volunteers will have the opportunity to interact directly and more intensely with several children and to guide them in special activities. The volunteers will mainly work in direct contact with the children and with the guidance of the staff fulfill smaller tasks independently. Including their own culture and social background is a special enrichment to our project and is supported by our fulltime staff.
WHAT THE VOLUNTEER HAS TO DO IN GENERAL
To offer ideas for games, sports and handicraft
To integrate elements of the volunteer's own culture e.g. preparing food together, national folk dancing, tradtions…
Support the kids with the performance of their ideas and plans
Improve contact and communication with the individual kids
Helping them with problems
To support them in solving conflicts
To teach the kids to understand certain rules and regulations
Tasks regarding the maintenance of the animal (Details are described above)
In general the volunteer is supposed to work 35 hours per week/ 5 days a week
Horário: A TYPICAL DAY
10.00 e.g. Taking care of a school class 12.00 e.g. Preparation of the handicraft offers for the children 12.30-13.00 Break 13:00 Looking after the children, e.g. do handicraft with them 17.30 Tidying up, conference with the team 18.00 End of the working day
Living Situation At Aki, there are two flats for the employees. The volunteers share a small flat together with a kitchen, a living room and a toilet. There is no separate bathroom. The shower is integrated in the kitchen (separated).
Each volunteer has his/her own bedroom.
Possible Learning Areas for the Volunteer The volunteer will get a deep and intense idea of the German culture (values, typical opinions etc.) The project is located in an area which is socially not privileged, but in general the surrounding is rather prosperous. This contrast shows a variety of German reality. The volunteer gets the possibility to get in touch with people from a variety of cultural, religious and social backgrounds. There is the possibility to learn about the background of immigration in Germany. Moreover the volunteer can get an idea what it means to be an immigrant in the second generation living in Germany. This way many children grow up in a conflict between their traditional set of roles, rules or the affiliation to a certain culture and the adaptation to their surroundings. This conflict is noticeable again and again in everyday life. Also subjects like problems with equal opportunities and socialization are, in general context, to be experienced in our institution. Besides the language skills in German there are many practical skills that can be achieved, e.g. handicraft techniques etc., but mainly experiences in handling children and pedagogical concepts: On the trampoline for example (all children have to share one big trampoline) children learn social interaction and that one has to hold back personal interests for the welfare of the community to allow a smooth flow of action. In handling our animals the children learn to treat them respectfully. They are included in the feeding etc. to learn that owning an animal is far more than just stroking it. They are at the same time encouraged to take responsibility. As the volunteers are included in most of the team meetings and the planning of the year, they learn about the organization and planning of pedagogical everyday life. They take part in defining short term goals and how they can be achieved and the evaluation. In the daily evaluation the volunteers learn to reflect upon their own actions and, e.g., to question certain children's behavior.
