Resumo: Today, town numbers 165 000 inhabitants and is a significant cultural, business and industrial centre, famous mostly due to the products of the Pilsner brewery, Pilsner Urquell.
In the last few years, the city has been displaying, step by step, a new, more attractive face and wishes to be an appealing entry gate on the journey from Western Europe.
The office of the host organization is located in the city centre, about a 5 minute walk from the main square. The seat is situated in a small, historical (newly renovated) two-floor building with all the necessary equipment and facilities. The volunteer has his/her own office table and computer in a spacious and variable office shared with other employees of the organization. There are 13 people working in the building and the work space is also shared with other extern team-mates of the organization project. The volunteer will be in everyday contact with the EVS programme coordinator and a maximum of 4 or 5 members of the whole team (probably from the sectors of Programme Coordinating, International Relations and PR.). He/she will meet with others regularly.
The volunteer is usually accommodated in a college dormitory (of the University of West Bohemia) with Czech or foreign students on the Erasmus programme. He/she can also have his/her own room in a flat with Czech students or in a special flat for guests of the organization close to the office of the organization.
In the city centre as well as in other parts of the city, there is easy access to supermarkets and hypermarkets, sufficient to buy all of life’s essentials. There are also four bigger shopping centres.
You can easily reach each part of the city, thanks to the good public transport infrastructure.
Around the historical city centre there is an attractive park area. On the outskirts of town there are also parks and forests, and on the northern fringes there are a number of ponds.
To take advantage of one’s free time, there are many restaurants, cafA©s, bars, clubs and tearooms, three public swimming-pools, many sports centres, English, German and French libraries, two multiplex cinemas, two professional theatres, many amateur theatre groups, many small galleries, great football and hockey teams, etc.
Staying in touch with both Czechs and foreigners (through the international working atmosphere) offers rich opportunities for a great stay in town. Furthermore, he/she will have the opportunity to get in contact with students from various European countries through the cooperation between the organization and the Erasmus Student Network (ESN).
The volunteer gets his/her food money and usually has lunch together with the rest of the staff of the organization.
The language training is based on the wishes of the volunteer, for that conventional group language courses as well as individual lessons are available. He/she can also train in an informal way – for example during meetings with some new Czech friends, students who want to learn a foreign language and during the same time to teach the Czech language to someone else.
Additionally, an experiences mentor, familiar with the working environment of the organization is available during the whole stay.
Perfil: We would like to welcome into our organization a volunteer who is interested in issues relating to the European Capital of Culture (ECoC) and to culture in general. We will appreciate a person who wants to cooperate with open-minded people, artists, cultural organisers and managers and the like. Simply put – with people whose dream is to work for a nice, creative, cultured and prosperous city for life. We would like a volunteer who wants to help with this effort and assists, for example, with developing new relationships with people from his/her country following the same goals.
Language skills – to ensure communication with the team members of the organization, we want someone who can speak English at a basic level. Higher communication skills are welcome for cooperation with Czech and international partners.
The volunteer should be open and curious to get to know new people and ways of life. Therefore, even if only a small amount, experience in the following areas is welcomed but not necessarily required: intercultural communication; event management in terms of art and culture; and cooperation with the social, environmental or business sector.
The call for volunteers is publicised on the organization website and on the websites of project partners. Based on the letters of motivation and visions, including already acquired experience, we will choose the person who fits the best with our current situation and specific tasks and challenges.
We will welcome an experienced sending organization, which will be a partner for us to ensure the right choice of volunteer, with whom we will share an understanding, and all requisites of EVS.
age: 18 until 30 years old
Tarefas: The European Capital of Culture is a prominent European project with 26 years of tradition. Its history has gone through a specific development, from celebrating cities deemed to be cultural Meccas to cities which are not as well-known or prosperous but, seen in a different light, possess great potential to develop through culture, cultural tourism, creative industries and the knowledge economy. The ECoC project therefore means the opportunity to be the driving force of the development of a given city.
There is no exact guide for implementing the ECoC project. Each city has different visions, conditions and tools for implementing the project.
The organization has set up specific mechanisms through which it plans to successfully implement the project. However, these mechanisms are subject to continuous changes and updates according to the situation’s development in the city. Implementing the ECoC project is a process, and in its beginnings it is not possible to define the specific work requirements of the ECoC team for the whole duration of preparations and realisation (6 years total), and thus it is also not possible to do this for volunteers.
The ECoC project is a vehicle of change, and the project itself must go through a process of development. During this process, the activities of the organization, which is responsible for implementation, will be defined gradually. A work system is also being built gradually, just as is the specification of individual tasks.
This allows for open opportunities in involving volunteers and in providing them with a wide range of competencies which they can develop by joining this project.
Learning to learn (to organise their own system of learning, getting new information, being responsible for their own learning)
Learning by doing (learning through practice, being a part of the process of preparing an event, a meeting or workshop, etc.)
Digital competence (to learn more skills of standard work with computers, Microsoft Office and other software, using the internet)
Communication in foreign languages (the main communication language is English, which the volunteer will use along with Czech as a common communication instrument. French is also used in ECoC and in the town so is the German language because of the proximity of Germany and Austria).
Areas which volunteers may participate in (listed below) will provide development in the following competencies:
Cultural expression (being in touch with everything which has to do with media, visual arts, performing arts, music and literature, building a new cultural infrastructure – physical as well as mental – and seeing the importance of the creative expression of ideas, emotions and experiences)
Entrepreneurship (in the ECoC project there is plenty of room to be creative and innovative, to learn Project Management, to catch on to the ability to turn ideas into action, but also to dare to take risks)
The work of the organization can be located in the area of culture and arts management. The volunteer is a full member of the team in order to support the exchange of Czech and international partners of the organization and in so doing to strengthen the European dimension of the project.
To make concrete the tasks, the volunteer will work together with partners from abroad on specific projects. As per one’s own choice, this can be the preparation of international projects, seminars and conferences, but also the preparation of cultural events in town, in which partners from abroad take part, such as exhibitions, concerts, etc.
It is not necessary to work on a special project with partners from abroad however it is offered. He/she can also cooperate and assist in motivating young people to participate in the ECoC project or to organise some event for Czechs.
The concrete tasks will be customised according to the personal interests and learning aims of the volunteer. For that, a specific work outline will be created together with the volunteer.
In addition, the volunteer will have the opportunity to develop their own project during his/her stay. The volunteer is in full charge of this individual project with the support of the organization team.
The activities of the volunteer, therefore, are based on the following fields of work:
Organization of specific activities of the organization
Help in running the organization
Implementation of personal activities
Examples of possible volunteer activities:
Administrative:
Sorting the contents of the ECoC library, collecting plentiful information on the ECoC project
Searching for information online
Scanning written and visual material
Data administration
Addressing artists and artistic organizations from their own countries to become involved in the ECoC project
Supporting the preparation of events / conferences / seminars:
researching possible participants for seminars and conferences
Creating participant lists
Preparing participant business cards
Preparing necessary supplies, office equipment or arts materials for given events
Help with creating advertising material and its distribution
Help with preparing a programme for foreign visits
Taking part in public events of the organization
Volunteers will participate in the activities of the organization gradually. After they become acquainted with the local environment, they will assist in specific, individual projects (seminars, workshops, conferences, lectures, happenings, exhibitions, data collection, etc.). After this, they will have the opportunity to create a project of their own based on the acquired experience.
