Resumo: The hosting organization is located in a city of Catania province with around 53.000 habitants. The town is located on a plateau on Ionian coast and enjoy of a great position between Etna volcan and Ionian coast and is 15 kms far from Catania.

The organisation and the youth centre Mistero Buffo are located in the old part of the city few minuted far from the main square, Piazza Duomo. The city have good connections with public transports (bus and trains) with the city of Catania but only between 7 am and 9 pm.

The economy of the area, since the agriculture sector is deeply in crisis, is based on trade and services. The city is located in one of the most populated areas of Sicily, has an historical city centre with important artistic monuments and a natural reserve (La timpa) on the coast which is one of the most interesting natural areas of Sicily.

The population and community suffer from strong unequality related to the social exclusion of unemployed people and lack of opportunities for majority of people living in the marginal areas of the city. The unemployment rate is quite high like in other part of Sicily (around 30%) but very often workers are employed in under the table jobs.

The criminal organisations are quite strong in the area, but the illegal business is often implemented in a less violent and evident way compared to other part of the region. But obviously the role of crime is a big obstacle to a full economical development. The arrival of communities of immigrants from Africa and Asia is a quite recent event , but the amount of population with immigrant background is increasing quickly and students with an immigrant background are increasing as well in the public schools of the city. Since 4 years the city hosts some refugees hosting projects run by Ngos, but it seems that both institutions and community are not enough prepared to this multicultural profile that the city is slowly acquiring.

In the youth field inclusion is a relevant issue since there are 2 main problems: high rate of youth criminality especially in marginal areas of the city and youth unemployment (more than 50% of young people between 18 and 30 years old are unemployed). At the same time there is a big lack of services for youth (free time opportunities, cultural opportunities, inclusion projects).

The few project and initiatives already existing lack of strategy, vision, coordination and long term plans.

The youth center Mistero Buffo in these 10 years of work try to be a point of reference for young people in the city offering a public service self managed by young people in the field of youth work and cultural promotion.

The volunteers will be part of the regular activities of the youth centre Mistero Buffo, which as said before, is managed by a partnership between different ngos and run several activites at the same time. The centre is a space with an educational policy based on non formal education values (voluntary participation, democratic and participative rules, active metodology) and work both with young people and adults.

We believe the centre can offer to volunteers an atmosphere which can support their learning thanks to the long experience of the organisation in the field of young mobility, the professional skills of some organisation members and thanks to the fact that the organisation is used to act as incubator of active citizenship and youth participation. Very often individual, groups, or youth organisation who want to realise an initiative or project ask help to the centre Mistero Buffo; we try to support them by giving spaces, equipment, professional guidance. We want to use the same method for the Evs volunteers involved in the project to support their proposals and ideas and offer them the opportunity to develop personal projects within the programme of activities and services for young peope offered by the youth centre.

Perfil: We’re looking for flexible, curios, open volunteers interested in doing activites which are diverse,in the cultural sector , immigration and environmental one. We’re looking for volunteers interested in discovering the Natural Reserve La Timpa.

It is important that volunteers have sense of initiative and feel free to share and propose new ideas, activites, project ot the organisation. They should have also motivation to work in a association together with volunteers who strongly believe in active participation.

It is necessary that volunteers are ready to live in a medium-small city like the hosting town which doen’t offer so many activities for the free time especially in the evenings, except the ones proposed by the youth centre. The selection will be based on motivation letter, interviews, questionairres.

Tarefas: Volunteers role will be to support the organisation members in the planning, implementation and evalution of the youth centre activities. Our idea of support, shadowing is not of being passive audience of what happen around the volunteer, but we believe that gradually evs volunteers can gain autonomy, feel part of the organisation and full understand of the context around them thanks to the support step by step offered by the organization members. The possibilty to propose and develop personal projects will be a key factor for this learning path.

Activities in which evs volunteer can be involved and can propose additional ideas will be:
- In the field of culture and non formal eduation: workshops (theatre, photography, videomaking, creative writing, music, language learning, international short movie festival “Magma”), poetry readings, performances, movie events, presentation of books, conferences.
- managament of daily services of youth centre (biblioteque, music room, booking of rooms , fund raising, raising awareness campaign)
- intercultural learning (italian language course for immigrants, intercultural meetings and parties, english conversation club, cinema events in native language)
- In the field of valorisation of environmental and cultural reasources (organisation of summer events in the visit centre of the natural reserve La Timpa, educational visit of the reserve for young people and children.

Volunteer selection won’t be bades on professional or studies curricula, no specific competences are asked. What is important is the motivation and interest for the activitie offered by the centre.
