Resumo: This is an 18.575 km2 archipelago, counting 245.580 inhabitants. Its administration organization is as followed: French state, local government, local parliament, 3 provinces (Loyalty Islands, Northern and Southern) and 33 town councils.
History
In 1774, James Cook, on board his ship Resolution, discovered a large island, as it reminded him of Scotland.
In 1853, the land became a French territory. Colonization started with penal one.
Main economic resource comes from nickel mining industry. Its quick development pushed population into industrial revolution. This was accelerated by American, Australian et New Zealand presence during World War II.
Until 1988 Matignon's Act, which put an end to civil disorder, New Caledonia knew several administration status.
Today, the tland is a country of great contrasts, combining a distinctive Melanesian culture with South Pacific charm and a modern European lifestyle.
Geography
It is one of the four richest areas on earth in terms of its biodiversity, with the largest variety of endemic botanical species and one of the richest tropical forests on earth.
However, due to insularity, oceanic tropical climate, a large mountain range through the main island and a tide population, is affected with :
- Lake of public organized transport means
- Large telecommunication disparities
- Critical population density: 4 towns around Nouméa represent 65% of total population
- Diversity distortion: Southern province's population is mixed (5 main communities); the two others are Melanesian.
Social and demographic factors
In 150 years, total population grew over 5 times, but geographically irregularly: Southern Province: 72%, Northern one: 19% and Loyalty islands: 9%.
75% of Melanesian population are speaking or understand one of the 33 different local languages. French is used by everyone.
60% of population is under 29 years old.
Entering scholar population: 4.500 new students per year. 44% of a generation reaches A level degree. At the opposite, 13.11% are illiterate (according to Army tests which every pupil aged 17 years old have to get through).
In 2008, the archipelago counted 6.599 unemployed people: 50% of them had no qualification and 30% of total population was under 26 years old.
Perfil: equired abilities :
- Age: 18 until 30 years old
- Capacity for a fast adaptation into a new culture and customs, as well as ability for an adaptation in a multicultural environment
- Open-minded person
- Ability for taking initiatives and developing ideas
- Enthusiasm to participate in the proposed activities and a great dedication to his/her work
- Interest in social issues
Selection process :
- Selection will be organised through a committee of 3 persons. All résumés will be read by all members
- MYSPI Association director is in charge of receiving résumés and apply letters
- At the end, committee proposes final selection to the association president who will make decision
- All candidates will receive an answer (positive or negative one).
Sending organizations which would like to cooperate with, have to provide to future volunteers comprehensive informations about EVS Program, before sending application forms to New Caledonia. The host organization will be glad to provide all further informations required.
Tarefas: Tasks :
- Inform young public and associations
- Liven up information desk
- Build and organize his own projects in favor of Youth population.
- Plan organization and logistics
- Write reports
- Contribute to communication mean production, participate in newletter and article production related to Europe exchange.
Main objectives:
- Look for informations and advise young people.
- Spread of information all over the Southern province
- Sensibilisation actions for associations (NGO) and public local authorities which don't control European programs.
- Activities organization for Youth about European programs.
Thanks its own tools, the organization will go through Youthpass process in order to enable European volonteer emphasise mobility benefits in his own résumé.
Several intermediate reports will be done between volunteer, sending and receiving organizations in order to improve EVS period of time.
