Resumo: With a population of almost 300 thousand, is a city located in northeastern Poland, serving the function of the capital of Podlaskie province. It is the administrative, economic, and academic center of the region, which, due to its exceptional environmental assets, has been termed the Green Lungs of Poland. The location in the environmentally clean region, full of tourist attractions, as well as the rich infrastructure, makes the city and surrounding area a great place for living, recreation and development of tourism.

Thw town has evolved as a place, which is the melting pot of different nations, religions, cultures, customs, and traditions, where the occidental rationalism meets the oriental mysticism. It has become an example of the integration of ethnic and religious groups, a meeting place for Poles, Byelorussia's, Jews, Lithuanians, Germans, Russians and Tartars. The multiethnic of the city was the reason for the Bia³ystok - born Ludwik Zamenhoff to start his work on the universal language of Esperanto The location, in the proximity of borders with Belarus, Lithuania and Russia, as well as the convenient transportation links, create excellent conditions for developing economic and cultural contacts with the countries of Eastern and Western Europe. Unlike other big cities in Poland and the rest of Europe, young people during the evenings like riding bikes, walking, going to the cinemas and café, and playing different sports.

Because of the specific work we organize as well as take part in different events which are held in our school, our town and in Poland ex: music, theatre and art festivals, sports events, therapeutic and rehabilitations camps. In our school there are 3 different associations working for mentally handicapped of our society: Aktywni - working at different fields (art, theatre, sport), Nike - (wooden, craft and art work) and The Special Olympics - (sport). All the pupils and most of the teachers are involved with these associations. It plays a huge role in their lives. So the volunteers will be able to help during those events. As the special center is a specific place to work it introduces all involved people into the main idea and specific of the work with mentally handicapped children. That's the chance the EVS volunteers are given too. By taking part in the special educational school center's tasks they face the problems of this group of children and shape their own attitude. That also challenges stereotype thinking as much as the manual and social skills the volunteers already have. The volunteers' duties give them a chance to develop manual, social and interpersonal skills as well as gain some new ones: organizing skills as the volunteers are responsible for their place of work and plan their own schedule according to the students needs and with any help of the Special Educational School Center's workers they only need. The volunteers learn how to build and keep the relations with the mentally handicapped people. They have an opportunity to form their competence in cooperating with other organizations, which are our partners in the local environment (schools, universities, music and theatrical groups, et).

Perfil: Because of the specific work of our centre we are not open to hosting volunteers with fewer opportunities. We can only accept volunteer which has the capability of working with mentally handicapped interns.

We would like to host someone who is really interested in Poland, who wants to help the others, who is open for new activities, who wants to try work with different age groups.

Because the special centre is a special organisation, we would like to host someone who is not afraid of contact with mentally and phisicly handicapped. Volunteers are not allowed to smoke and drink alcohol in the project. In the hosting organisation are English speaking employees, so it would be good if the EVS volunteer speaks (at least basic) this language.

We would like someone who is responsible, who is aware of being as an ambassador of its own country, and in some ways is the model for the teenagers in the local community. While it's the social projects we need someone who is very open and warm person, who doesn't have the problems with making new contacts.

Some artistic skills would be helpful (arts and crafts, music etc.). And at the end, we would like to have someone who is creative, who would like to improve The Special Educational Centre live with his/her knowledge. Volunteers who don't have the necessary qualifications will have the opportunity of being active in creating and sharing his/her ability e.g. Playing musical instruments, knowing some new art's methods etc. We will be happy to receive from the volunteers any proposal, which would enrich projects to work with children. We are sure, that very often the volunteers have great ideas, which is very precious in the work of our organization
age: 18 until 30 years old

Tarefas: The Special Educational Center wants to offer the volunteers a variety and balance in different tasks, which is not that difficult because of the different projects in the organization.

Volunteer will start with a short introduction period after which he/she can make a choice which project he/she prefers to focus on. The project will challenge the volunteer to take part in different activities during his/her volunteering period. The volunteer will get a lot of guidance in the beginning from the contact person and help from other volunteers in getting acquainted with the town and other young people living here.

Depending on the volunteer he/she will get more responsibilities after the introduction period. Working with mentally handicapped children is challenging, but demanding. So the project will keep the close watch on that the volunteer is able to cope with these demands.

List of tasks of the volunteer: the volunteer will have a basic responsibility to assist the teacher. The volunteer will join in tasks which encourage the students to grow emotionally, mentally, physically, socially and spiritually. To give you an idea of the volunteer's duties we mention here different sorts during the whole project:
Assist/ conduct in social/ recreational programs for the students: at the boarding school: helping students doing their homework, doing crafts, watching movies together, playing games, quizzes, organizing common meetings like teatime, birthday parties, going out, taking part of different evening activities etc. Assist student to eat, individual project -working with 3 Associations, which work for handicapped children. Because children with special needs often feel themselves isolated and lonely, as one of our goals it could be good idea to look for an opportunity to bring different children together and working as the teacher's assistant at school.
