Resumo: The school is located in a suburb, which is dominated by the architecture of the turn of the century (1900).
From here to downtown it is about 10-15min by public transportation or bicycle. The rooms for the volunteers are located upstairs in the building of the school.
The town is situated in southwestern Germany, in the border triangle between France and Switzerland, about 60 km from Basel and 75 km from Strasbourg. The town has altogether about 220.000 inhabitants Although is a city, if feels more like a big village!
The Albert-Ludwigs- University, founded in 1457 is one of the oldest and most famous universi-ties of Germany where 20.000 students are registered. The university and its hospital is one of the most important employers of the whole region.
The town is an economical center in the Upper Rhine region where the service sector and public services are dominant. Furthermore tourism plays an important role. The Old City with the cathedral as the town's landmark is the destination of 3 million visitors every year. The town is well-known as the gateway to the Black Forest and it offers various cultural possibilites, e.x. theaters
The town is a hub on the Rhine Valley Line which connects Basel with the economic centers of Karlsruhe and Mannheim. The town and its nearer surroundings are connected by 4 tramways and 21 buslines. A well developed bus network connects with touristic destinations of the Black Forest and the neighbouring alsatian region in France.
To ensure regional mobility European Volunteers get a monthly ticket for all means of public transportation in the administrative district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald; on workdays from 14 h, on weekends and during school holidays the ticket is also valid in the neighbouring counties of Ortenau, Schwarzwald-Baar, Lörrach and Waldshut-Tiengen.
Perfil: Volunteers need to be interested in school education for children with and without handicap. They need to be open minded and interested in the pedagogy. They need to accept that their tasks - as it is true for all staff at the school - might also include some work of routine and is not only sophisticated. We like volunteers who are open for new experiences and who are willing to be part of a team. They should be curious and interested in getting in touch with people. They should not be easily frustrated if it comes to disappointments. It is important to us, that volunteers like to work with children and teenagers. A volunteer has to have the ability of dealing with children full of empathy and respect, yet to keep a professional distance as an adult and authority.
A certain religious confession is to expected, but volunteers need to be open towards the Christian and protestant conception of our school. They need to accept and respect the Christian belief as one of a possible conviction.
Basic knowledge of the German language would be helpful. We expect volunteers to learn and improve their German. However, learning the language should not be the main motivation for volunteers applying for this project.
Candidates should describe their motivation for a voluntary service in this project in a detailed letter of motivation. Important are neither national or social background, gender, language skills nor level of education, but a convincing motivation.
Tarefas: Volunteers can participate at the developement of a new concept of school education. They will learn about the educational ideas of the host organization and about the work with children, some of them being handicapped.
Volunteers will have the opportunity to gain knowledge and understanding about Germany, about peoples attitudes and about their way of thinking.
A main task will be the educational assistance: supporting individual children of small groups during the lessons. They also will support teachers at excursions. They can offer activity at school breaks. If volunteers are creative or sportive, they can offer workshops or events for children in these fields. If they are interested in helping developing the educational concept of the school, they are welcome to do so.
They will be given the possibility to prepare parts of the lessons and material for self-directed learning according to the ideas of the organization.
We welcome volunteers to being active and to increase the quality of our work.
For support and help volunteers will be offered regular meetings for relecting and improving their work. Here they can develop and discuss own ideas for activities. The volunteer service might help to find a professional orientation.
Volunteers can participate at a language training, which is offered to various European volunteers of the region. The aim is to improve oral language skills for daily needs. The training will be offered by the coordination organization and the teachers are specializing in German for Foreigners. It will take place once a week at the late afternoon or early evening. Up to two hours of the training will be counted for working time.
At the language training different volunteers can meet each other. This supports the exchange emong each other.
Monthly activities will be offered by the coordinating organization. Volunteers can influence the program by participating at the organization. This helps volunteers getting to know the region and understanding the cultural and historical situation. A important focus is put on European subjects, such as participating at a European Festival or an excursion to the European Parlament in Strassbourg. It is recommended to volunteers to be part of these activites, but it is optional.
Volunteers will receive support, if they want to inform themselves about educational possibilites and about professional mobility.
