Resumo: The association is housed in a large converted farm building with a surrounding garden. The core community members and the guests live in the farm. There are also small apartments in the garden where the guests can live independently. The volunteer either lives in one of the apartments or in a room in the farm building. He/she shares the living room, kitchen, toilets en bathrooms with the other community members.
The volunteer is expected to be an active part of the community.

This includes helping out with the practical household-related tasks and spending part of his/her free time with the community (e.g. eating together). Het Lichtpunt is a christian community.

Prayer, reading from the Bible and meditation are part of daily life at the association. Two important house rules are that you are not allowed to use swear words and that men and women sleep separately if they are unmarried. It is not required that the volunteer is christian him/herself, but he/she needs to be able to respect this way of life.

The town is a small village in Friesland, one of the northern provinces of the Netherlands. With 3.000 inhabitants. It is located in a rural area, with ample opportunities for outdoor activities, such as cycling, hiking and iceskating. There are a few basic shops (supermarkt, bakery). The town has a variety of lively and active sports and leisure clubs (big band, choir, football, volleyball, iceskating, tennis). The community centre and churches also organise different leisure activities. The nearest city is Leeuwarden, which can be easily reached by bus and train (there is a train station in the neighbouring village). The volunteer should keep in mind that there are not a lot of young people at the association or the town. He/she will therefore have to put in an extra effort to build a social life (of course with support of his/her supervisor and mentor) and willing to travel outside the village to meet other young people.

It is important to know that, in addition to Dutch, most inhabitants of Friesland (so also the staff and clients of Het Lichtpunt) speak Frisian as their first language. Frisian is closely related to English, German and Dutch. Besides Dutch it is the second official language of the Netherlands.

The placements at association is hosted in cooperation with Togetthere, the International Youth Programme of ICCO and Kerk in Actie. Togetthere coordinates a voluntary year programme in the Netherlands, in which approx. 20 host projects participate. Selection, interviewing and placing of volunteers at Het Lichtpunt is the responsibility of Togetthere. IMPORTANT: Volunteers cannot apply directly to Het Lichtpunt, they have to do that through Togetthere!

Togetthere only works with sending organisations that are part of EDYN (Ecumenical Diaconal Year Network) and Roma-Gadje Dialogue Through Service (RGDTS) initiative. There are close links between EDYN and RGDTS.

EDYN is a strong network of organisations from twelve EU member states and the USA who all offer a similar voluntary year programme. Organisations wishing to join EDYN have to adhere to high quality standards to become a member. These standards relate to (language) training, volunteer support, financial management, insurances etc. On the website of EDYN (www.edyn.org) interested volunteers can check if there is an EDYN member in their country.

RGDTS is a network of ± 20 Roma and non-Roma organisations that provide voluntary service opportunities for non-Roma in Roma communities and Roma in non-Roma communities. Improving the living situation Roma in Europe and initiating a dialogue process between Roma and non-Roma are the main goals of RGDTS. RGDTS has an application form similar to that of EDYN, as well as its own partner charter.

The members of these networks have jointly developed a detailed application form, with which the volunteers need to apply. The volunteers also need to write a letter of motivation and provide three references (for Roma volunteers less strict rules apply).

Each volunteer is interviewed, either by Togetthere staff or by an EDYN/RGDTS partner organisation. In the interviews, specific interest is paid to the reasons why the youngsters want to volunteer. The placements involve close contact with people and requires volunteers that are dedicated and eager to be involved.

In the matchmaking phase, the different required skills for the projects are compared with the compentencies and interests of the volunteer. When a potential match has been made, Togetthere informs the contact person at the host project and the mentor about the candidate volunteer and asks if they agree with receiving the selected volunteer(s). If so, Togetthere proposes the project to the volunteer(s). If possible, the volunteer can visit the project before making a decision (for Roma volunteers as separate preparation visit is organised). When the volunteer agrees with the match, the placement is confirmed in a letter or e-mail to the volunteer. If the project is refused, the matching process will be repeated with a different suitable project.

Togetthere strives to carry out the recruitment process for the Togetthere voluntary year in a spirit of transparancy, honesty and trust. In all stages of the process, the volunteer, contact person at the host organisation and mentor are closely involved.

Tarefas: The association offers volunteers a variety of service and learning opportunities. These include:
- developing new capacities and skills, in particular with regard to working with people with psycho-social problems (listening, being patient, being hospitable, organising & coordinating activities etc.)
- learning to live and work together in a community with people from many different backgrounds
- gaining insight into association's Christian approach to social care
- spiritual development and personal growth
- experiencing life in a small, but close-knit local community & becoming acquainted with both Dutch & Frisian culture and language
The volunteer will be a full member of the community, with his/her own tasks and responsibilities (community-related and with the guests). These tasks and responsibilities will be adjusted to match the volunteer's experience, skills, age and language skills. The community expects the volunteer to take his/her service seriously. The volunteer will be part of a larger group of other volunteers and professional staff who work Het Lichtpunt. The volunteer is guided in his/her work by a professional member of staff or a more experienced volunteer and has regular supervision meetings with the community coordinator.
Activities

At association the volunteer could do the following activities:
Giving personal attention to the guests (talking & listening)
Guiding the guests through their day programme
Organising group activities for the guests like (board) games, drama workshops, painting, going for a walk etc.
Assisting at the candle-making workshop
Accompanying the guests to the local council, employment agency, housing agency etc.
Taking part in community life: doing the dishes, tidying, shopping, cooking, eating together, doing fun things etc.
Helping out at the second-hand (book) shop: picking up, sorting and, if necessary, repairing second-hand goods + keeping the shop tidy & attractive + assisting customers
The association welcomes individual initiatives of volunteers. For example, if a volunteer is good at dancing or poetry writing, then he/she could organise a workshop with that activity.
