Resumo: The association is located in an historical farm house. The house is surrounded by a big (vegetable) garden with fruit trees and beautiful forests. So there are plenty of opportunities to go for a walk or cycle around. The farm house has a few private bedrooms for the community members and guests. The volunteer will stay in one of these rooms, which are provided with basic furniture (a bed, a wardrobe and a desk). The bathroom & toilets, kitchen, living room and prayer room are shared spaces.
The retreat centre for young people is located in a separate building on the grounds of the farm. The main form of transport in and around Hilversum is the bike, which will be provided by Casella. It takes approx. 10 minutes to cycle to the nearest shopping area.
The town is quite a big town (85,000 inhabitants) in the central part of The Netherlands. It is the Dutch 'media capital'. This means that a lot Dutch television & radio is made here. Based in Hilversum is the national centre voor image & sound, an interactive museum about TV & radio in The Netherlands. There are several train stations in town, with regular & fast connections to, for example, Amsterdam, Utrecht and Schiphol Airport. The town has all kinds of cultural, sports and leisure facilities. So no matter what you like to do, you're sure to find it in the town. It is also a very green city with many parks and gardens
Perfil: The association is a host organisation in the Togetthere voluntary year programme in The Netherlands. To participate in this programme in the volunteer needs to
- be between 18 and 30 years old
- have a strong motivation to do voluntary work
- be willing to live in a different country and to learn Dutch
- be part of a team/community and work together
- be respectful towards the Christian faith, as well as other beliefs and religions
Specific volunteer profile for the association:
- due the character of the community, only female volunteers can be placed at Casella
- good social & communication skills
- interested in faith-related issues
-willing to share and reflect on experiences
The placement at association is hosted in cooperation with Togetthere, the International Youth Programme of ICCO & Kerk in Actie. Togetthere coordinates a voluntary year programme in The Netherlands, in which approx. 15 host organisations participate. Selection, interviewing and placing of volunteers at Casella is the responsibility of Togetthere. IMPORTANT: Volunteers cannot apply directly to association for a placement, they have to that through Togetthere!
Togetthere only cooperates with sending organisations that are part of EDYN (Ecumenical Diaconal Year Network) and Roma-Gadje Dialogue Through Service (RGDTS) initiative. There are strong links between EDYN and RGDTS.
EDYN: is a strong network of organisations from twelve EU member states and the USA who all offer a similar voluntary year programme. Organisations wishing to join EDYN have to adhere to high quality standards to become a member. These standards relate to (language) training, volunteer support, financial management, insurances etc. On the website of EDYN (www.edyn.org) interested volunteers can check if there is an EDYN member in their country.
RGDTS: network of ± 20 Roma and non-Roma organisations that provide voluntary service opportunities for non-Roma in Roma communities and Roma in non-Roma communities. Improving the living situation Roma in Europe and initiating a dialogue process between Roma and non-Roma are the main goals of RGDTS. RGDTS has an application form similar to that of EDYN, as well as its own partner charter. On the website of EDYN (www.rgdts.net) interested Roma volunteers can check if there is an RGDTS member in their country.
The members of EDYN and RGDTS have jointly developed a detailed application form, with which the volunteers need to apply. The volunteers also need to write a letter of motivation and provide three references (for Roma volunteers less strict rules apply). Each volunteer is interviewed, either by Togetthere staff or by an EDYN/RGDTS partner organisation. In the interviews, specific interest is paid to the reasons why the youngsters want to volunteer. The projects involve close contact with people in need and requires volunteers that are dedicated and eager to be involved. In the matchmaking phase, the different required skills for the projects are compared with the compentencies and interests of the volunteer. When a potential match has been made, Togetthere informs the contact person at the host project and the mentor about the candidate volunteer and asks if they agree with receiving the selected volunteer(s). If so, Togetthere proposes the project to the volunteer(s). If possible, the volunteer can visit the project before making a decision. When the volunteer agrees with the match, the placement is confirmed in a letter or e-mail to the volunteer. If the project is refused, the matching process will be repeated with a different suitable project.
Togetthere strives to carry out the recruitment process for the Togetthere voluntary year in a spirit of transparancy, honesty and trust. In all stages of the process, the volunteer, contact person at the host organisation and mentor are closely involved.
Tarefas: The organisation can offer the following service and learning opportunities:
- to experience community life both practically (running a household together) and spiritually (reflection on daily life and faith-related issues)
- developing new capacities and skills, specifically with regard to working with (groups of) young people and people in difficult situations (being hospitable, organising fitting activities, giving personal attention)
- working as part of a team (working together with different kinds of people, giving & receiving feedback etc.)
- gaining insight into Casella's vision and way of life
- to find out more about the Dutch culture, lifestyle, language and social welfare system
The main role of the volunteer is to be an active part of the community and to support the community members with hosting groups of young people in the retreat centre. In the first few months of the service, the volunteer will be introduced to the three main working areas (community, the retreat centre, and a local social project). The volunteer's tasks & responsibilities during her service will be adjusted to her preferences, experience & skills, age and language skills. Once the volunteer is more settled and able to communicate in Dutch, she can take on more responsibilities. The volunteer is guided in her work at Casella by the members of the community and the professional member of staff of the local social project. She has regular evaluation meetings with her supervisor.
Typical activities for the volunteer
The volunteer will have 3 main working areas:
- Thagaste - retreat centre for young people (40%)
-The Casella community (40%)
- Local social project (20%)
Each of the working areas is described in more detail below.
Thagaste
Thagaste is a so-called retreat centre, a place where people can be silent and reflect on their life. It is open to Individuals & groups, aged between 18 and 45. The volunteer can help with welcoming the guests and making sure that they have a good stay.
In addition, the volunteer can support the sisters with developing & leading activities for groups of guests, such as walking meditation, yoga, bible discussions and painting icons.
The community
A volunteer at Casella is expected to be an active member of the community. This includes:
- Sharing (life) experiences
- Assisting with the running the household: cooking, doing shopping, cleaning etc.
- Attending the daily prayers (morning, afternoon and evening) and the weekly house meetings
- Sharing some of your free time together
Local social project
The organization has connections with a few local social projects in and around the town. Depending on the volunteer's preferences and skills, a suitable local social project can be found to volunteer at for one or two parts of the day each week. An example of such a project is 'De Cocon' (cocoon), a centre for homeless people. De Cocon provides different services for homeless people, such as residential units and a walk-in centre.
The volunteer can help out at the walk-in centre, which includes welcoming the visitors, giving them coffee/tea, providing them with clean clothes and having a chat. The volunteer will be guided in her task by a professional staff member or experienced volunteer.
