Resumo: Our organization is located in the city whose population today exceeds one million residents and more specifically, in the are of Ano Poli, near the acropolis of the city, in a neighbourhood that includes facilities of schools and cultural units.
the city has been and still is a busy, lively coastal city with a long history and tradition. A reason for that is because it has always been a node between the West and East and a trading harbour for many Balkan countries. It embraces many immigrants and cultural groups from many areas of the wider region of the Balkans thus rendering it a colourful mosaic of cultures and trends. More information is available in the website of the municipality www.thessalonikicity.gr
In this variety and multi culturalism exactly, lies the following challenge: to combine all the characteristics, traditions and distinctiveness of its residents, aiming to their peaceful co-existence.
The actions of our organization towards this goal, who are necessary for future generations, are mainly realized locally except for some actions related to the realization of European programs and are held in regions Macedonia-wide.
Hosting previous volunteers gave us the opportunity to understand the needs and the special features local soicety has, related to the coexistence with volunteers. We have succeded, except of crearting a good atmosphere, to learn how to solve problems and avoid negative incidents between members of local society and volunteers by fughting against stereotypes and prejudices.
Tarefas: As it was stated above our organization, that has completed one year of action, has formed the circumstances as well as the learning opportunities so as to belong in YiA program. Specifically, the organization has these local and international programs going:
Youth Information Spot
The organization operates every day (09:00-15:00) as a Youth Information Spot. In our office we provide information about European programs (Youth in Action, European Youth Foundation, Leonardo Da Vinci, Groundvig, Comenius et.al), programs the promote European mobility, personal development, the spirit of voluntarism and professional proficiency. Furthermore, trained volunteers provide advice on educational, personal-social and professional issues. Additionally, we provide with material about the European union and the council of Europe so that young people will come closer to the idea of the European union and they will understand the role and the purposes of its creation as well as its function, emphasizing on youth-concerning issues. Finally, the office of the organization functions as a place of free expression and communication.
Based to our statistics, our organization, as a sending one, has sent 1.700 people, between 16 to 35 years old,
to European programs, 60 people have been informed and sent to EVS programs, 3.450 have been informed about European programs and activities through personal contact or via internet and 6.000 people receive our monthly newsletter.
Balkan Hot Spot
In our place there is material on the countries of the Balkans such as books by Balkan writers and writers from eastern Europe, historic and photography albums as well as brochures from other cities, towns and regions in the Balkans. Moreover, one can also find leaflets about organizations in other countries and get access to the internet and electronic sources on Balkan related topics or even communicate with young people from all over the Balkans. A future action of this program will be to organize Balkan-languages and tradition courses and the E-Balkans whose goal is to create an electronic radio station on the internet and a newspaper online.
Afternoon workshops
Hosting afternoon workshops: jewelry maki Fairy tale telling projecting a film of social content, board and video games competitions/tournament, Greek traditional dances and folklore emphasizing on dances and traditions and the similarities of them with the equivalent ances and traditions of the Balkans.
International Programs
Our organization has realized several International Projects both as coordinator and organizer organization. Until now, we have undertaken three training courses, one youth exchange, two EVS projects and one local action through Youth in Action program, as also five training courses, two research projects, and one documentary through other European programs and through European Commision. We also participate as partners to other
projects of organizations, based in Balkans, with whom we are stable partners in thematics mainly related to intercultural dialogue and human rights. Some of these partners are members of the Austrian National Agency s network, YouthNet, and IGLYO, a network of LGBT organizations.
In the framework of realization of international projects, we aim to implement new projects to several European Organizations such as Youth in Action, European Youth Foundation, Ana Lind Foundation and others.
The volunteers who will be occupied in our organization will have the opportunity to get trained in all the European programs, get in contact with the actions of the organization and take an active part in their realization. At the same time, they will have the opportunity to realize ideas of their own and develop their talents and skills freely. The MANAGERS of our organization will support the idea of YiA by utilizing every possible opportunity so as the volunteers to gain during their stay, knowledge and skills on program realization on issues in which they are interested and gain, through their participation in various events, experience and knowledge on Greece, its history and civilization.
More specifically:
1. The volunteers will help in informing young people daily in our information spot about the programs of the European union and the promotion of Youth in Action program in the local society and about other European programs as well.
2. The presence of the volunteers will be a live projection and promotion of YiA program and at the same time, an example to learn from and imitate for the young people of the local society.
3.The volunteers are able to help in our research for collecting music, books and films that will be added to the existing collection of our organisation and enrich it. Items that will assist in the realisation of the goals in Balkan Hot Spot action
4. The volunteers will be engaged in the development of theBalkan Hot Spot action and the realization of E-Balkans where they will take over a whole part of its realization.
5. Volunteers will be involved in the creation of documentaries about cultural issues in Balkans.
6. The volunteers will support the afternoon workshops by giving motivation for new ones, developing and enriching the content of the actions.
7. The volunteers are expected to design and carry out their one plans of action within the Youth in Action program and of course they will help us to manage, organize and realize the programs of our organization
Finally, it is our principle to embrace our volunteers and make them members of our family. Make them feel free to develop all the aspects of their personality.
Members of our organization are experienced in the Youth in Action programmes and they have developed a quite good network of non governmental NGOs based in Europe and Balkans. United Societies of Balkans is also member of many networks which are active in European field. Through these networks, our members get in contact with several similar sending and hosting organizations from Balkans and East Europe and they have been informed about the realization of EVS program. The fact that some of our members were EVS volunteers has enabled us to secure a good program planning and its realization. Finally, last years we have created a great list of volunteers eager to take part in some of our future projects.
Volunteers who will be accepted in our organization as EVS volunteers have to be enthusiastic about their participation and their interests to be relevant with organizations' activities so to improve their skills within their stay. Although our organization is not able to host disabled people yet, we give priority to young people with fewer chances who come from rural places in Balkans and East Europe. The profile of our volunteers are young people, aged between 18-30, with social and financial problems and every kind of educational background. Volunteers are selected based on meritocratic criteria and without any discrmination. We follow the selection procedure below:
As we want our open call for volunteers to be easily accessible, we publicize in our official website and other European websites of EVS program an announcement saying that we are able to host and send volunteers. We also produce some radio and tv spots, informing about our EVS position and our local and international activities. The spots are uploaded to several websites and pages. After the deadline of the open call for volunteers, we carefully study every CV and motivation letter. Then we organize Skype interviews with the shortlisted candidates and finally we decide who will join the EVS program in our organization.
Condições: The organization in its first trial as host and coordinating organisation, has accepted two young people for the first period, and five for the second period.
Opinions and attitudes we have formed through our previous experience were important to modify certain things and ensure more qualitative and remarkable results firstly for our volunteers and then for our organisation and local society. Every volunteer is treated as a unit with its own characteristics, needs and specificities and then as a team member of volunteers, organization and society. That's why we have created individual plans of action to help everybody develop their skills and personality.
During the stay of volunteers, young people from local community have been informed and educated on topics relating to EVS volunteers either for personal development or to gain experience as they are social science students or future EVS volunteers.
The organization will be host max 5 volunteers.
