Resumo: Bela Krajina region lies in the south-east border of Slovenia and Croatia. It has very diverse landscape, as hills of Gorjanci and Koèevski rog,up to 1000m high. On the other hand, the central part of Bela krajina region there is low karst landscape with a distinctive cultural landscape, a beautiful mix of natural and cultural heritage.

More than 60% of region is covered by forest and with 2/3 of region is protected as Nature 2000 region. Here are two specific areas of protection of nature: the Regional Park Lahinja and Regional Park Lahinja Kupa, many monuments that are protected at the national or local level. We are especially proud of the fact that the Bela krajina region clean and not polluted.

Climate is continental with high temperatures in summer (up to 35 degrees Celsius) and cold winters (to -15 degrees Celsius). I would especially mention the river Kolpa which is very clean, suitable for swimming, canoeing. There are more than 25 marked bicycle and hiking trails. Bela Krajina has three municipalities and three larger towns Èrnomelj (7.000 population), Metlika (4.000 population) and Semiè (1000 population). It has many small and charming villages in the countryside.

Economically Bela krajina is not very well situated with lower income then Slovenian average More or less agrarian country with many vineyards and several major manufacturing companies.

Èrnomelj and Metlika are very old settlements, which first settlements date back to prehistoric times so here are a lot of archaeological finds. Especially interesting is the history of Bela Krajina during the Second World War when it was the first liberated zone. Bela krajina is also highly multi-ethnic area since living here for five ethnic communities, which belong to three different religions living together in peace and tolerance.

Èrnomelj is largest town in region with 7,000 residents, bigger city near Bela Krajina region is Novo Mesto (45,000 inhabitants) located about 45 kilometers (about half an hour by train) to Èrnomelj and Ljubljana is capital city of Slovenia (350,000 inhabitants, 100 kilometers, two hours by train). In Ljubljana there is an airport. Èrnomelj has two elementary schools, middle schools centre, cultural centre and cinema hall, two sports halls, tennis courts, a football and basketball courts, recreation centre near city, several galleries and cultural institutions, many sports clubs and other associations as the Youth Center BIT, Youth Music club, Students society of Bela Krajina etc. These societies organise a series of cultural, sporting, educational and other programs. In all there is possibility for volunteer to include and participate. Èrnomelj is so economic, administrative, cultural and sports centre of Bela Krajina in which young people can participate in many activities. There are many cultural festivals music festivals EtnoFolk, Èrnfest, Schengenfest, theatre groups, music concerts in the Youth Cultural club, photo club, art galleries and clubs in which a volunteer can incorporate and reflect the art, on the sports field many biking and hiking trails, recreation halls in the sports hall in the winter, possibility of visiting the basketball, volleyball, fitness, yoga, meditation, martial arts, dance classes, folklore and in summer the opportunity of swimming, canoeing on the river Kolpa. Many activities are free prices for concerts are low (up to 10€). RIC Bela Krajina works with many tourist, sporting, cultural and other associations on common projects.

Accommodation:
Volunteers will be accommodated in Youth Hostel Èrnomelj or a private individual, depending on individual needs and costs. We have quite a few options. As Èrnomelj is small town there is no public transport in Èrnomelj can go by foot to any part of the city as it is in any direction maximum 10-15 min. If a volunteer will be staying in the Youth Hostel he/she will have the opportunity to stay in a room alone. Some rooms are furnished as an apartment and have bathrooms and toilets, while others have shared bathroom. Volunteer will also be able to cook themselves but there is a possibility of combinations that volunteer cook himself while he has other meal in hostel or restaurant (lunch price is around €4-6€) depending on the service. Hostel also has computers with internet access and a living room. The volunteer will have free entry and exit. If the volunteer will be staying a private apartment, he/she have their own apartment.
Personal support and mentor:

Personal support will be given through several ways. The most important is definitely a mentor in addition to the organization's staff and circle of friends that volunteer will create. Mentor, in the case of individual EVS-a person outside the organization, but that person knows the functioning of organisation. In the case of a group EVS we will ensure at least one mentor for two volunteers. Personal support will be given by the employees in the organization, the coordinator of volunteers will be available 24 hours a day by telephone in emergency situations. The dormitory has also employed staff available 24 hours daily for emergency case. Volunteers will receive paper with all relevant telephone numbers (police, ambulance, medical center, employees of the organization, mentor, embassies, bus/train station, national agency and map of Èrnomelj and Bela krajina region).

Volunteer coordinator will govern matters such as the official residence permit, bank, tax, meeting with medical center etc.

Mentor will show volunteer the important locations in the city (the library, student center, sports halls, restaurants, entertainment etc..). Both the coordinator and mentor will have regular evaluations with volunteer although we hope that there will be no critical situations. Coordinator will have on Monday morning meeting volunteer to review the work of the previous week and work plan for the current week. We will discuss the progress of work, satisfaction concerning work and living, ideas for projects and views on work and leisure time and their personal interests for individual projects.

Perfil: Our organization is open to host volunteer boy or girl and we have no limits concerning his/hers religious, ethnic or sexual orientation, social status etc. But we are not able to accept volunteers with movement or mental disabilities because we do not have trained professionals to work with them. Our organisation also doesn't have entrance friendly for people on a wheelchair so unfortunately we cannot accept them.

We hope that the EVS volunteer is going to be innovative person with new ideas and proposals, ready for some field work and open minded. We have already informed the coworker in organisation about EVS and volunteering so we will choose volunteer together.

We are definitely open organization and not limited by who and what background volunteer is. As we are organisation more or less working in tourism we would like to have good cooperation with the sending organization, which could also participate in other projects in tourism, natural and cultural heritage, environmental, organising events, develop ideas etc.

Tarefas: 1. Together with a team of RIC Bela krajina analyze innovative ideas for the quality walking or cycling routes, which would include elements of natural and cultural heritage. Viewing locations, photo shooting locations and informative signs along the way, helping to create texts and finding funding for the routes. Work on the project, editing paths, working on promotion and promotional materials etc.

2. How to present Bela krajina's natural and cultural characteristics to young people abroad using audio-video media. Shooting short documentaries of Bela krajina landscape and publication on websites, etc..

3. Working on program at the oldest folklore festival in Slovenia, Jurjevanje in Bela Krajina. There will be plenty of different interesting activities. Cooperation with Cultural gallery Laterna to organize an art workshop and exhibition on the theme of folklore, organization and implementation of video workshops and producing a documentary film about the festival. To cooperate with foreign folk groups that will be invited to the festival (to assist in monitoring the group, preparing material for the group ...). Also helping in organizing the festival (some office work, field work, contacts with local and foreign folk groups). We hope volunteers will also express their views of activities at the festival.

We would like to make the EVS specific, positive experience, both for us and also for a volunteer. New views and new knowledge is always good and broaden our horizons.

Horário: The volunteer will work from Monday-Thursday from 08:00 to 16:00 and 08:00 to 12:00 hour on Friday. If volunteer will be working over the weekend he/she will have free time during the week.
