Resumo: Cologne has got a million inhabitants and is one of the biggest cities in Germany. It is situated in the Middle-West of Germany, 100km away from the Dutch, the Belgian and the Border to Luxembourg. For it locates important industries it has always been a magnet for workers from all over Europe, so it hosts people with many different cultural and national backgrounds.

Cologne is a university city with more than 60.000 students. It offers a wide range of cultural activities, nice cafés, restaurants, an excellent nightlife and alternative subcultures. The inhabitants are considered as open-minded and well-humoured. Cologne is famous for its cathedral, roman history many churches and the beautiful Rhein river for its traditional carnival. The girls home is situated in the centre of Cologne - a cultural and social mixed neighbourhood.

Perfil: The center is open to all motivated volunteers. A basic level of German is welcome and we expect the volunteer to have interest in learning German. We expect the volunteer to have an interest and empathy for the girls from all over the world and their difficult situations. In addition she should be initiative and self reliant have ideas for meaningful, creative and leisure time activities. She should be flexible.

We are happy to work with any sending organisation who would like to send us well motivated and prepared volunteers.

Tarefas: In our EVS project Café International we offer a placement where a volunteer has got many possibilities to join and offer different free time activities to the girls who live in the girls home, such as cinema visits, fitness and sport activities, creative activities, baking, cooking, international evenings, concert visits and much more. Some of the girls who live in the foyer have psychological or social problems, so the biggest task is to motivate them for the organized activities. The café is open five days a week including Sunday. The volunteer works in the Café from Monday to Thursday and two Sundays a month. During the opening times the volunteer offers drinks and snacks to the guests and helps them using the Computers or Internet. The working times can change depending on the activities outside the café that the volunteer will be joining or offering. The volunteer works up to 35 hours a week. She will never be left alone in the foyer. There will always be another worker around.

The members of staff have been working with international volunteers for five years now. The volunteer takes part in workers meetings. She can add her perspective and opinion due to her different cultural and national background to the planning and reflection of projects. The foyer hosts some foreign girls as well. Due to the volunteers age and international background she will be closer to the residents than the professional staff.

She can build a bridge between the girls and the care workers.

The volunteer can facilitate intercultural learning and European awareness among the residents and guests in the café. Through the volunteer the girls learn from another country and way of living. Some of the girls have never been away from Cologne, by the volunteer Europe comes home to them. She can bring in elements of her own culture, e.g. cooking traditional meals with the girls. The volunteer has got the opportunity to join trips and projects organized for the residents and Au-pairs or to organize activities for them herself. It gives her the chance to get to know places of interest in Cologne and surrounding and also to visit museums, films, theatre. For activities the foyer offers 6 PCs with Internet access, scanner, digital camera, kitchen, material for arts and crafts. The volunteer for example can give lessons in how to use the computers to a small group of girls. It depends on her interests and skills. Once a week one member of staff cooks together with the girls and the volunteer.

We are planning also sports activities outside the foyer e.g. Basketball and Hike in the surrounding of Cologne. It is the volunteers task to edit and distribute the monthly café programme. The programme describes the monthly activities in the café. Once a month the volunteer helps preparing and running the regular Au-pair meetings. The volunteer can develop and realize her own ideas in decorating the café.

In addition to the activities in the café the volunteer helps in the Euro- Desk team. She will support the colleague by finding new volunteers help them to find a project and to prepare them for Au-Pair or volunteer services. As a living example she can encourage the youngsters (especially those with fewer opportunities) to become volunteers. She can answer to the questions of the potential volunteers.

Through her commitment the volunteer can make new experiences, find out what she/ he is good at and what she likes and gain more self esteem. She will become more confident in dealing with people and in organizing and running different activities and leading groups. She will learn about networking and campaign work. The volunteer will learn to deal with youngsters from a disadvantaged background. She/he will also learn to work as part of a team e.g. during seminars. She/ he also has got the opportunity to help with other European Programs such as Leonardo. A task can be to help to prepare the youngsters to go abroad.

Another important task will be to collect information about Youth services in the community e.g. training courses, advice centres, information about social services, job offers.

The volunteer will be supported by members of staff and other volunteers by running the activities. One aim is also to offer the volunteer the possibility to learn more about German ways of living by getting to know the living conditions of youngsters here.
