Resumo: Residential home for 24 people with primarily physical disabilities aged between 36 and 65. The purpose is built residential setting operating 24 hours a day 365 days a year. It comprises of 18 bedrooms with a patio door accessing paved gardens, and 5 self contained apartments, each consisting of a sitting room, bedroom, kitchen and a bathroom. There are several large communal rooms for recreational activities and a large dining area. The House is located in the village of Monkstown beside the sea, 1 kilometre outside of the large town of Dun Laoghaire and 8 kilometres from Dublin city centre. 

Perfil: As a host organisation the House supports 3 volunteers, on one year placements at any one time. Volunteer roles are considered as additional and separate to those of paid staff. looking for volunteers who like interacting with people and are flexible, with a reasonable standard of English. Although experience of assisting people with disabilities is not essential, some experience of assisting disadvantaged children or adults will be an advantage. Preferably volunteers will be students taking a year out between school and university, with a desire to experience another culture and to improve their English. Volunteers are advised to familiarise themselves with the location where House is based, so that they know what to expect before they arrive!!

Tarefas: Volunteers are given an induction into the routines of Richmond House and best practice in terms of supporting people with disabilities. Volunteers are coordinated by the Lifestyle Facilitator. There are daily morning meetings and a longer weekly meeting to evaluate and plan activities and provide guidance and support. Volunteers will become familiar with the needs and capabilities of physically disabled people and gain an understanding of what this means, and learn to respect people’s dignity and independence while doing so. Volunteers assist people to do things that they would otherwise be unable to do themselves. This means supporting people to live like everyone else, with the right to self determination, and to take responsibility and pursue activities regardless of disability. Volunteers interact with people through recreational activities such as social outings to the theatre and concerts, visiting local cafes, restaurants and pubs and trips out into the local community for walks and shopping. They sometimes accompany residents to attend day centres, hospital and doctors appointments as necessary. Volunteers help residents with their daily needs and aspects of their personal care when they are together outside of the house. Volunteers accompany people on public transport such as local bus services, Dart commuter trains and the Luas tram service. They also assist with administration duties such as organising daily transport and daytrip arrangements.

Condições: Volunteers work 35 hours a week with the flexibility to work weekends and evenings as necessary, with 2 days off per week. There are 26 days paid holiday a year. Volunteers are given an allowance of 90 euros a week and receive a 20 euro international phone card once a month. There are 3 bedrooms for volunteers with a shared bathroom within the main building. A mentor is provided and volunteers are encouraged to meet with her at least every two months. Linguistic training is available according to volunteers needs. On average volunteers receive 10 weeks training of 2 hours a week. There is a catering kitchen offering a wide choice of food three meals a day to residents and volunteers. The main kitchen caters for all specific dietary requirements. Volunteers can also cook their own food in a separate kitchen. There two computers with internet for residents and volunteers use, and wireless throughout the building, and volunteers have access to telephones and fax also.
