Resumo: Palermo is the 5th city of Italy and the 1st of Sicily in term of population, with about one million inhabitants. It also hosts an University, with about 50.000 attending students. As every big cities with such characteristics, Palermo offers both positive and negative aspects, which are nowadays its peculiarities.
There are for sure big problems of urban degradation and social marginalization, worsened by the presence of organized crime and a chronicle lack of public services.
Paradoxically, there are also very strong positive elements, connected to the civic response to organized crime and to the lack of public services: active citizenship, volunteering, social activities are quite often organized by young people and students.
Other positive aspect is the presence of immigrants communities, some time at the third generation, fully integrated in the social and cultural life of the city and representing the evolution of Sicilian history full of different domination which have built an open and multiethnic culture.
In this context the experience of “Informagiovani” (YouthInformation) has started 10 years ago, in order to provide the city with services which are “normal” in other big cities in Italy and Europe to
inform young people, associations, non-profit organizations and to stimulate their active citizenship.
On the promotion of the right to information as fundamental right of citizenship for young people, we have developed firstly a project and than an association, which is nowadays active all over Italy and
co-ordinates an European network.
This will be the working context of the EVS volunteers. They will work in a rich and active environment, shaped and managed by other young people (some of them with EVS experience) and addressed to young people and those who work with and for young people.
Volunteers will also have the possibility to experience a very intercultural environment, since the Sicilian society offers an ongoing mix between different cultures and because many activities will be run in co-operation with schools, institutions and associations working with young immigrants, in particular in the historical city centre of Palermo.
Volunteers will live in an apartment, they can share with EVS from other projects. Both common and private rooms will be provided in order to facilitate socialization but also respect privacy of all the volunteers.
The volunteers will manage the apartment by themselves and thus will organize their time, according to the project needs and the Programme rules, enhancing their personal growth.
According to the total number of volunteers simultaneously hosted, new flats will be arranged in order to provide adequate room for all volunteers and in order to facilitate their stay in Palermo or its surroundings, in connection to the working place.
Living in a close contact with the local community will give to the volunteers not only the possibility to quickly learn the Italian language, but also to enter the Sicilian culture, strengthening the informal learning aspects and the intercultural experience connected to the EVS.
The EVS volunteers will have as base for their work the office of the association or in the office of the specific local project of InformaGiovani, but will some times move also, together with the volunteers from Informagiovani, to other cities or different areas of the city, in order to visit schools or other associations in order to support the planning and implementation of the information initiatives as well as of the voluntary actions organized by Informagiovani and its local projects.
We want underline that all projects have big support by local volunteers who make it possible to run activities. Local volunteers are essential part of our local and international activities.
This make it evident that the EVS volunteers will not have a special role in the organization as volunteers almost everyone is a volunteer) but they will have a special” role being INTERNATIONAL volunteers, being able to bring an inter-cultural approach to the activities, acting as intercultural, bridges”inside the community, bringing new point of view and different perspectives in our daily work and in the methodologies adopted to deal with the specific theme of the projects.
EVS volunteers are, first of all, a way to strengthen inter-cultural environment and approach in our work on a daily base. Through the presence of international volunteers in our office and in our daily activities, we can put into practice our ideas and working concepts. The volunteers will be a human resource for our work, meaning that they will come with new ideas, different cultural background and experiences thus contributing to improve InformaGiovani’s work and, consequently, to increase the quality and impact on target groups.
Of course, being volunteers who are not required to play a professional role, they won’t be required to have specific professional competencies.
In the same time, volunteers will act as social actors inside the local community, being testimonials of the positive aspects of European programmes and European integration and thus becoming promoters of social awareness about the impact of EU policies in the daily life of citizens.
