Resumo: Non-govermental organisation Alter Nativa has been working for ten years with the voluntary workers in the third sector. We have organized tens of events, involving mainly environmental and sustainable lifestyle / development area. At present we run the project Centre of the Alternative Lifestyle, which gives opportunity for foreign volunteers to participate. This way they are able to pass our experience to their sending organisations and vice versa, we gain new experience and information about their culture, traditions and way of life. The hosting of the foreign volunteers is also motivation for our members to learn and practice foreign languages.

The main aim of Alter Nativa

The main aim of Alter Nativa organisation is the environmental protection and sustainable development of the local community using the permaculture principles:

>> implementation of sustainable lifestyle and permaculture principles into everyday life, establishment of the Centre of the Alternative Lifestyle i.e. building up The Environmental Educational Centre, introduction of the alternative technologies, local exchange-trading systems (LETS) as well as the systems of the local mutual help, also fruitraising and market-gardening without use of fertilisers, ethical stock-raising, animal welfare etc.

>>organisation' s activities are supported by one co-ordinator and three active workers. Another six volunteers from local community take part in our projects.

>>our permanent activities include separated collection of waste in the local community, i.e. sorting the collected waste into several categories (plastics, glass, metal, paper and bio-material). In cooperation with local authorities we process bio-material (hay, leaves...) and build compost heaps around the village. We run the Community Centre including public library. The aim of the centre is providing consultancy services, project planning, educational opportunities, lectures etc.. It is the only public place with an internet in the nearby villages. Besides it offers other services, such as printing, copying, translating etc. The seasonal activities include renewal of the uncared orchards(tree-planting, grafting, care of old trees, fruit processing) and ecological farming (however animals require permanent care). In colder months we put more emphasis on the revival of crafts (pottery, basketry, carpentry). We make projects and also personally help to build functional workshops.

>>We also organise public permaculture courses, various trainings and seminars connected with the above mentioned topics. We also offer room for meetings, seminars or another educational activities to other people, groups or organisations.

>>The target group: people interested in sustainable lifestyle without overwhelming consumption, in alternative technologies and ecological farming. We try to address the widest range of people possible, especially the younger generation.
Main themes for the activities:

Environment, Permaculture, Seedsaving and
Sustainable rural development

Project environment:

profile of the organisation and local community

The project environment for the suggested voluntary activities, including the local community where the project will take place.
Brdarka is small, relatively isolated village situated in the northern - mountainous part of Rožňava district, which is affected by high degree of unemployment. Geographical isolation causes long distances from industrial plants (working opportunities), on the other hand it provides healthy and clean environment. Brdarka is inhabited by slovak and gypsy communities (about 50 people, most of them unemployed). Approximately 15 people are involved in the activities of our organisation. The goal of volunteer activities is to propagate the ideas of sustainable lifestyle.

Perfil: The volunteers should be interested in the alternative technologies, ecological farming and natural stock-raising, they should be modest, that is environmentally conscious (behaving carefully to natural recources), with some practical or at least theoretical experience in the mentioned field. Of course, the motivation to learn and to be useful is more important than any experience or knowledge.

We will communicate with all people interested and ask them to fill in the questionnaire, then choosing the most suitable candidates.

Sending organisation should be dealing with environmental protection, permaculture, alternative technologies, animal welfare etc.

Tarefas: We can offer to volunteers in terms of service and learning opportunities.
Concerning educational values we offer the opportunity to participate in our projects, that is building up the structures according to alternative masonry technologies, ecological farming i.e. market-gardening and stock raising, vegetable and fruit processing. Our project also includes running the local Community Centre which provides mostly latest information from the above mentioned topics.
The accomodation facility is situated directly in the village. Volunteers will be provided with the room of his/her own (or with one another volunteer in one room if agreed), shared bathroom and kitchen. There is one grocery store in the village, other services are available in Rožňava town (30 km) or village of Štítnik (15 km). Bus links to mentioned places are available four times a day, once a week we offer a journey by our van.
Role of EVS volunteers in the host organisation

Volunteers will be actively involved in the common life and activities of the organisation, they will help with building the structures of the Centre, ecological planting and tree planting(eco-orchard, forest garden), and they will participate in the organizing the social and cultural events for local community as well as the volunteers. After becoming acquainted with the work in our small library, they should be able to manage basic works for distribution of sustanabilty related literature and other products.

Horário: The week's timetable:
30% preparation, instructions, training; 50% individual work; 10% meetings with the organisation's members and the target group; 10% language course.
The timetable is usually adapted to interests and needs of a volunteer after consulting with the coordinator or/and supervisor.

Tuesday, Thursday 9:00-12:00 - animal care, feeding and grazing, recycling works, sorting the collected materials, work in the workshop (wood-works, pottery etc);

12.00-13.00 – lunch;

Monday to Friday 13:30-16:30 – outdoor activities, i.e. renewal of uncared orchards, seasonal farming works, assistance at building small structures around the village (compost sites, woodden bridges, fowl house, corrals, ponds, herbal spirals etc.), renovation of traditional building in the village by nature friendly materials and methods, assistant works in workshops (preparation of materials such as osiers, debarking the trees, wedging the clay).
Slovak language lessons every Tuesday and Thursday in the afternoon (2 hours)

Weekly working hours are 30. Weekends are mainly free. We will be pleased if the volunteer takes part in the assistance and preparation of the organisation’s activities (courses, trainings, meetings and seminars, etc.) which usually take place on weekends. In that case she/he will obtain an equal time off in next days. For a year stay she/he will get 24 days holiday. Of course, if there are any urgent events she/he can leave for some days after consulting with the project manager.

Many of our activities held outside are dependent on weather conditions. Therefore we might be pressed to adjust the timetable to actual seasonal conditions. In case of suitable weather the outdoor activities may last for 1 or 2 hours longer or the midday break may last longer in hot weather. Of course, we do not plan to get over the amount of weekly working hours.

Condições: During weekends and holidays the volunteers can participate at some of our unofficial events (birthday parties, sessions at campfire). Brdarka is situated near two national parks so there are many hiking or biking possibilities. Our organisation keeps contacts with many NGOs so we can always inform our volunteers about the actual cultural events in the region, they can meet other volunteers there. To this a contact with a mentor will higly contribute.

We also offer our volunteers to bring and put forward their own ideas and opinions about the organisation’s life. We provide them some space to share their previous experience and to do things in the way they think or know will bear good results in the future.
