Leipzig is located in the northwest of the Free State of Saxony. The city and its 500,000 inhabitants became known throughout the world in the fall of 1989 as the center of the peaceful revolutionary movement in East Germany. It is home to the second oldest university in Germany as well as serving as an important trade fair center. Around 1 million people visit Leipzig every year, enjoying the city's lively atmosphere and diverse cultural
offerings.
