Resumo: This year we are organizing annual hot air balloon fiesta & Latvian national championship “Valmiera Cup 2012” (see information about last year > www.balloon.lv). Therefore this is information for you to get introduced with the project and its environment:
• First of all this is a short term group European voluntary service (EVS) project for 2 months. After this project you will be able to participate in other EVS project for max 10 months in other country if you will be interested to do voluntary work in the future. Other volunteers, who choose long-term projects, cannot do EVS for the second time. So you are lucky if you read this!
• Project offers to cover all the expenses – starting from travel from your country to Latvia until daily expenses that are covered from the project. You will receive food and pocket money and you will have a separate room for living and shared bathroom with other volunteer (2 persons per 2 room apartment)
• This project will give you knowledge on how to organize international sports event in field of hot air ballooning, how to promote Event and what it takes to become an official within the Event. As an addition to the above mentioned, there will be 3 main trainings – on-arrival training organized by Latvian National Agency for “Youth in Action”, training for being a crew member in hot air ballooning team & Latvian language courses during the first month with Italian / English / Latvian speaking teacher.
• You will be in a good company of 7 other youngsters, local mentor (advisor) and project manager as well as your Officials (Event office manager, Chief Scorer, Event sport director and others)
• The duration of the stay in Latvia is during 15th of June until 14th of August. The main Event is going to be held in Valmiera (city where you will be hosted www.valmiera.lv) from 25th – 29th of July!
• EVENT is usually attended by 15 – 25 hot air balloon teams from Baltic states (Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania) & closest states like Poland, Russia, Czech Republic, sometimes Germany and other countries. Every ballooning team consists of pilot + 3 crew members. Usually Event involves ~120 persons including ballooning teams, volunteers and Officials.
We are planning to host 7 volunteers from Portugal (2), Italy (2), Romania (2) & Georgia (1).
How is this project organized?
This project involves volunteer (YOU), sending organization from your country, coordinating organization with EVS project experience since 2002 & hosting organization “99 hot air balloons”, known as the biggest hot air balloon club in Latvia (hey, we are not so big, we have 7 hot air balloons and 8 pilots but we are the biggest club in Latvia ☺ ). Coordinating organization does the administrative work (project management), hosting organization is responsible for organizing Event, sending organization has to prepare you for the departure to Latvia & YOU have to come to Latvia in June 15 to start your E V S! Easy as that! ☺
Perfil: What we EXPECT from YOU:
- To be interested in hot air ballooning and event organization
- To be able to speak fluently English (if you are not good enough currently, you can ask your sending organization to organize individual courses for your needs)
- To have willingness to undertake different tasks together with Event Officials (staff)
- To spend 2 months in Latvia and learn basics of Latvian
- To present your country during event.
Tarefas: Tasks: to assist the officials of the hot air balloon championship “Valmiera Cup 2012” (EVENT), to organize local events for promoting event in the city and to do school / university visits in order to introduce local students and pupil with the EVS program & the event. Assisting event officials includes participation in measuring teams, assisting in the competition centre offices, debriefing and launch master assistance & assistants for other officials (safety officer, event deputy director, and office administrator).
Working hours and holiday: every working day – max 8 hours per day, including trainings, tasks according to volunteer and hosting organization chosen activities. Holidays are available up to 10 days except the work during the main event – July 25 – 29 in 2012. Application for holiday can be approved if applied by e-mail to uldis@zemgalei.lv 3 days in advance.
Horário: Working hours and transportation (during the Championship working hours for all of the volunteers & officials are more than 10 hours per day / during the Event Hosting organization will organize volunteer shifts so that shifts during 24h do not exceed 8 hours per day; transportation – bicycles available for volunteers for period of hosting, during Event – cars of the officials);

Formação: Language support: Language support will be provided during all the 2 months of hosting period by trained personnel who have pedagogical skills and adequate language knowledge. In the beginning training will be organized for the entire group to get to know the Latvian language.

Knowledge about the tasks within the Championships / safety rules / championship rules of the event / tasks of officials and assistance needed to organize the event / knowledge about meteorology and wind directions and influence on the results / hot air balloon presentation and flight presentation with a task

Possibilities:
School / university visits about program “youth in action” and the Championship to be held in Valmiera;
Work in information tent in the centre of Valmiera city;
Organizing workshops in Valmiera Culture centre
Language club organization for Valmiera youngsters
Other initiatives
(assistance from local volunteers will be provided)
- Practical experience in organizing International event in field of Sport
Knowledge of organizational issues, practical knowledge of the flights and tasks within the event, knowledge about administrative work.
