Resumo: Kaunas is situated in the centre of Lithuania, at the confluence of the two biggest rivers the Nemunas and the Neris, 100 km from the Lithuanian capital Vilnius. Kaunas is the second biggest city in Lithuania with the population of more than 415,700 and the area of 156 sq. km. It was founded in the 12th century and owes its existence to its favourable geographic position. For years Kaunas has been a major center of nation's spiritual resistance and struggle for national identity. For twenty years Kaunas was a provisional capital of Lithuania. The spirit of activity and movement prevails in Kaunas today. Kaunas enjoys a remarkable Old Town which is a concentration of ancient architectural monuments.
Kaunas is proud by it pedestrian street which is full of various cafes, bars and small shops. This 1.7 km-long street was built in the 19th century. Laisves Avenue connects the new and old parts of the city. The Avenue runs almost precisely in the East-West direction. Kaunas' Zoo is the only Zoo in Lithuania. It is located in an Oak grove in the south-western part of the city of Kaunas. There are a lot of famous and interesting place to see in Kaunas. Kaunas Castle, Pazaislis abbey, Kaunas fortress, Kaunas Botanical garden, Zaliakalnis funicular Railway, M.K.Ciurlionis museum are only small part that is interesting to see.

There are over twenty-one thousand students at the 9 Universities in Kaunas. There are 97 schools of general education, 12 professional (trade) schools and 13 colleges. For that reason Kaunas is full of energetic and young people. They are able to communicate English, German, Italian and some other languages.
Kaunas International Airport is the second busiest civil airport in Lithuania after Vilnius International Airport and the fourth one in the Baltic states. The airport mainly serves international passenger and cargo flights and is located in Karmelava, 15 km (9.3 mi) northeast of Kaunas centre.
Kaunas has well developed public transportation system. There are 16 trolleybuses routes, 49 bus routes, and a wide shared taxi carrier network.
Average winter temperature: -5°C (minimum -27°C), average summer temperature: +17°C (maximum +35 °C). It is always difficult to forecast the temperature for the next winter or summer. It is recommended to have an umbrella with you in spring and autumn and not to forget to take warm shoes and jacket for winter.
The Lithuanian language and its close northern relative Latvian are known for being exceptionally antique. The oldest Indo-European languages still spoken today, they are remarkably similar in grammatical form to Sanskrit. This is a good opportunity for you to learn an old language and to experience the joy of communication in Lithuanian. Nevertheless many people speak English. In Caritas organization all workers speak English or German.
We are sure that you will be excited after finding how much Kaunas may offer you. In Kaunas you may find two commercial cinema theatres and few non-commercial ones, which offer less popular but really interesting movies. Every year Kaunas Jazz staff presents a great festival with a wide and rich spectrum of modern jazz. Music is performed by talented musicians from all over the world. Every year Kaunas city days are celebrated in spring time and many other events are suggested for Kaunas inhabitants and it guests.

The project takes place in Kaunas, Caritas Lithuania organization. Caritas organization is located in Kaunas Old town in the very old building which was built in the XVII century. The surrounding is beutifull and full of ancient monuments. From here you can reach every part of Kaunas Old town easily.
23 employed people works in Caritas organization. Students from high schools and universities do their practice work in Caritas organization. People here can speak either English or German. Therefore there is no room for the fear regarding the matter of communication.
The main aims of the project are following:
1. The involvment of young people into social acitivities and development the solidarity with people in need
2. The encouragement of volunteers' active participation
3. Social work with the clients
4. Fostering of mutual understanding and tolerance
5. Exeption and respect for culture diversities.

Volunteers will work with the clients of the project who are trafficked women and their children, aged sick and lonely people, children in day care centre, homeless and people from risk groups.
The most problematic fields in our society are women trafficking, poor families, and children with learning difficulties, children from social problems having families, prisoners and ex-prisoners, disabled people. Caritas puts it efforts to help to these people.

Tarefas: Activities of the volunteers will take place in Kaunas, Caritas Lithuania organization. The main aims of the project are following:
1. The involvment of young people into social acitivities and development the solidarity with people in need
2. The encouragement of volunteers' active participation
3. Social work with the clients
4. Fostering of mutual understanding and tolerance
5. Culture diversities.

Condições: Caritas Lithuania appreciates all profiles of volunteers. Often young people come to organisation straight after the school. They are provided with a good oportunity to be involved into organizational work, to know more about people, their life and problems they suffer from. Sometimes volunteers find their vocation, or their voluntary work influences in making further decision on their profesion.
We appreciate young people experienced in social work as well. They brings new ideas to our work and help a lot to the clients.
Caritas Lithuania is open to host various volunteers. We consider all volunteers application taking priority to those with a higher motivation. We make contacts with the volunteers and their sending organizations to explore more about their interest. We take into consideration volunteers interest, openess to new experiences. EVS coordiantor tries to find out which project field regarding volunteer's wishes and ability fits to work in.
Caritas Lithuania has well-established relationship with some sending organizations. Despite this we are open for the new contacts and new possibilities.
