Resumo: The Fountain of Hope Project, takes place in the small rural mountain village of Panatau in the foothills of the Eastern Carpathian mountains. The project is an afterschool center, run in partnership by AMURTEL Romania and the Panatau local government since 2007. It provides hot meals, homework support and a variety of extracurricular activities to disadvantaged schoolchildren from the local community. The children have been identified by the community’s social worker as having social disadvantages, such as poverty or learning difficulties and as being at risk for school dropout. The project aims to awaken a genuine love of learning by offering children, fun, creative, non-formal opportunities for self-expression and thematic learning. In the summertime, young people from the community are given the opportunity to become involved in a summer club called “T.I.P.” (Clever Kids of Panatau Club), and are facilitated to self-organize constructive uses of free time, such as dances, educational film screening, ecological activities, artistic activities, hiking, etc.
The volunteer’s main responsibilities are the planning, implemetation and evaluation of the extracurricular activities in Fountain of Hope, as well as participating in the daily maintenance and running of the program (cleaning, assisting with serving the hot meals, gardening etc.).
In addition, the project also includes socialization and recreational contact with Familia AMURTEL, a home providing permenant alternative residential care for children that aer not in the care of their families, and the Vistara Integration Project, which facilitates the social integration of the young adults transitioning out of care from Familia AMURTEL. Volunteers have the opportunities to provide positive peer models for the Vistara young adults, and also to mentor the younger children from Familia AMURTEL. AMURTEL also runs an organic farm nearby, which produces food for the children’s home and a cooperative of consumers (CSA – Community Supported Agriculture), which hosts activities such as permaculture workshops and other activities with an ecological theme, that volunteers are welcome to participate in.
Perfil: No academic qualifications are required, but preference is given to those who show genuine interest in the project objectives, activities and methodology.
Recommended qualities are:
− keen disposition to work with children
− basic working knowledge of English
− basic computer literacy
− sense of community service
− interest in self-development and sustainable ways of living
− sense of responsibility
− willingness to learn
− clean police conduct certificate Assets:
− creative and / or artistic skills
− sports skills
− interest or experience in organic gardening
− experience (volunteer, professional) or background in social work − interest in yoga and meditation The above criteria have been carefully chosen because of the nature of the project, which includes providing English exposure, and creative extracurricular activities, sports and yoga to children, as well as participating in the gardening.
Tarefas: The preparation phase consists in volunteer training, participation in the annual renovation and decoration of the center, gardening, enrolling the children and meeting with parents. Once the schoolyear begins, volunteers meet with the children to identify their interests, and to design and organize a program of extracurricular enrichment activities together with the children and project director.
Volunteers also assist the cook and director in meal preparation, cleaning and preparing the center for the educational activities, gardening and chopping wood for the heating in the winter. A regular routine of cooperative games, music, yoga and centering experiences help the children to release energy and calm themselves in preparation for homework. Volunteers receive training in conducting this Neohumanist “Circle” program.
After completing their homework lessons, the children then participate in the extracurrircular activities designed by the volunteers – such as art, crafts, sports, computer work, drama and english. Some of the activities may be organized as “clubs” and some as group activities or theme projects.
During the summertime, the young people from the center are given the opportunity to participate in self-organizing community events for the young people in the village – such as film screenings, discos, art classes, drama presentations etc. Volunteers’ tasks are mainly to plan, implement and evaluate the activities.
In addition, the “Multicultural Festival” is a program for the local primary school, in which one class of children come at a time to enjoy an intercultural experience and a creativity session. The EVS volunteers are asked to prepare a power point presentation about their country and plan a creativity session. Once a year the volunteers help to organise an Open Day program for the parents and other members of the community, promoting the results of both the center and EVS.
In addition, EVS volunteers are given opportunities to socialize and participate in both non-formal and organized activities with the children of the Familia AMURTEL project and the young adults from the Vistara social integration project.
As the beneficiaries of these projects often have deep emotional problems from their history of neglect and trauma, volunteers receive training about the special needs arising from traumatic histories.
