Resumo: The hosting organization is one of Denmark’s oldest folk high schools – but at the same time also a lively and modern place to be. Here, students get the opportunity to explore new sides of themselves, immerse themselves in both academic and creative interests, and become part of a community where curiosity, conversation, and engagement are at the heart of everyday life.
At the High School, there are no exams or fixed curriculum – instead, there is room to experiment, learn for the joy of learning, and build friendships for life. Students live at the school for 14–24 weeks and fill their everyday lives with morning assemblies, classes, committee activities, folk high school evenings, parties, and shared leisure activities. Students choose the High School to become part of a community – a community where there is also space for needing to withdraw and recharge from time to time.
At the school, you will find a wide range of subjects – from art, literature, and music to politics, philosophy, nature, and sustainability. Students come from all over Denmark and the rest of the world and are mostly between 18 and 25 years old.
The school is located in the small town, surrounded by beautiful nature and only 2.5 hours from Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen. The school shares facilities with two schools that have grown and developed together over many years. This is also reflected in the architecture, which is full of cozy corners and a genuine Hogwarts-like atmosphere.
As a volunteer, you will become part of everyday life at the folk high school. This means that you will primarily spend your daily life together with the students – and around two days a week you will work in the office alongside the school’s communications staff member. In other words, you will become part of both the student community and the staff team. You will live at the school and share all meals with the students – becoming part of the everyday life that makes the school something truly special. This way of living requires a strong ability to sense your own needs and recognize when you need time and space to withdraw and recharge.
Perfil: Age: 18-30
We are looking for a volunteer who is naturally open-minded and curious, and who wants to build relationships with the students at the folk high school. It is important that the volunteer becomes part of the community and genuinely wants to engage in everyday life at the school. The volunteer should see the students as friends rather than a work assignment – otherwise, the main task of communicating daily life and the folk high school experience through photos and videos simply becomes too difficult.
We are also looking for someone who is creative and interested in working with visual media. Ideally, the person has experience creating content for TikTok and Instagram, but a strong understanding of the culture and content on these platforms is also a great advantage.
We value independence and responsibility. In Denmark, we often work with the principle of “freedom with responsibility,” meaning that you should feel comfortable taking ownership of your tasks. Our experience is that people grow a lot when they are given freedom within their responsibilities – and that it often allows them to work in the directions they find the most exciting. In the end, that creates the best outcome for everyone.
To thrive here, you should be able to communicate in English and/or Danish, both spoken and written.
Tarefas: As a volunteer, you will primarily spend your everyday life with the students and secondarily work in the communications department. You will act as the link between the office and the students, so it is important that you have strong communication skills and, in general, an open and approachable attitude. You should be ready to engage with the students – both in classes and during their free time – as one of your most important tasks will be to capture and communicate everyday life at the school through photos and videos. This is a task best solved when you are naturally part of the student community.
In practical terms, this means that you will live in student housing and share all meals with the students as part of your daily life. On Mondays and Tuesdays, you will work in the office alongside the communications staff member, while Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays will mainly be spent with the students and as part of the subjects and activities you are involved in. You will follow a schedule that often ends around 3 PM – after that, you will have free time. Your free time is entirely your own, but we prefer someone who would like to take part in activities outside class hours, as this is a big part of being involved in the folk high school community (both as a student and as a staff member). There will also always be some form of weekend activities available, and you are more than welcome to join.
The High School is currently on a journey of developing its external communication and marketing. New subjects and courses for new target groups are regularly being created – and naturally, these need to be communicated to the outside world. You can gain insight into many of the more technical aspects if that interests you, but most importantly, we are looking for someone who enjoys taking photos and videos that can be used for the website, social media, and other communication materials. Ideally, you are also confident with editing and video production and able to create engaging reels and TikToks.
