Resumo: Project Environment
The Studentenkinderhort is based in the "Altes AKH" in the middle of the University campus in the 9th district of Vienna.
We believe that only in a respectful environment, a child can develop his full self, and so his creativity. In our long history we build on and continue the tradition of an education without fear of authorities to ensure that the education of humanity continue to succeed.
The opening hours of the Hort are Monday- Friday from 12 to 6 p.m. During these hours the volunteer should be present and interact with the children. The volunteer should bring in her/his own knowledge and experience from her/his culture area, which may be music, dances, tales, cooking receipts, games, sports etc. according to her/his personal preferences and in this way make the children familiar with his/her background.
The afternoon starts with a common meal, cooked by our own cook and after that 1-2 hours where the children do their home work. After that, the leisure time activities start: mostly outdoors, but also indoors if the weather is not good. During the openings hours, two full time staff members are present. This guarantees that the volunteer will never have the sole responsibility over the whole group of children.
This project is coordinated by Grenzenlos, which means that the volunteer will be integrated in the MELANGE programm, the EVS in Vienna in cooperation with the city of Vienna/wienXtra This means that she will have the opportunity to meet 25 other foreign EVS volunteers as well as Austrian returnees. All volunteers will be offered a leisure time programm, in order to get to know specifics about the Austrian and Viennese culture. There are monthly meetings in order to offer continuous follow-up of the volunteers and to offer a social event where current, future and former volunteers can meet. Grenzenlos also organizes housing, helps with finding language courses for the volunteers and offers a mentoring programm as well as help with all administrative matters.
Perfil: Studentenkinderhort does not host a volunteer aged under 18.
In the project Studentenkinderhort no specific skills are needed. A volunteer should in general be open minded, interested in sports and outdoor activities and enjoy to work with children. An creative spirit or languages skills can be from advandage but are not needed.
The project Studentenkinderhort is coordinated by Grenzenlos within the MELANGE programm. Within the networks of Grenzenlos the project placement is promoinvite and all young people interested in the hosting placements are invited to apply. An application consist of a CV, a Motivation letter and the full details of the responsible sending organisation which Grenzenlos forwards to KG Amerlinghaus where the selection will be made within the team and the parents.
All vacant placements of Grenzenlos EVS projects will be sent to all partner organisations of Grenzenlos and will be published on the 'melange-site as well. In this way the placement is open for all applications.
However in the selection procedure a preference is shown for candidates with fewer opportunities. The applicants are informed about specific preferences (gender, background etc) including the justification for these preferences. The applicants are welcome to inform about the current procedures an ask questions at any time. Upon request, the hosting placement can be asked to give reasons for their selection.
Tarefas: A volunteer in Studentenkinderhort would be an international young person taking part in the activities and having "more time" for the children than our staff does.
Our pedagocical concept ist that:
* We put the child with his personality and history in the center of our attention.
* We do not think that adults can generally 'see through' children, but we admit children a right to his way of beign a and leave them their own truth.
* We provide space for creative development to be seen without evaluating it.
* We maintain a respectful treatment of the children in the team and with the parents.
* We offer stability and continuity through a core team of longtime employees.
* We are gender-sensitive and equal, both in our pedagogy as well as a team.
* We encourage the development of personal skills, as we introduce the children to independence, to self-activity and in consequence to a healthy self-esteem.
* We stand for an integrated intervention on emotional, social and intellectual level.
* We are committed to children's rights according to the UN CRC.
* We provide time and space to run around, dancing, jumping - and trying out the feel of the body.
* We take the time unsubscribe conflicts, by accompanying and fixing them.
On a normal day we have lunch at 12 all together. At about 1pm, the children devide in groups and do their home work. The volunteer also joins a group and can help the children, if necessary. After the homework, the leisure time programme starts.
On Tuesdays this mostly is sports: swimming, football, gymnastics, iceskating, or any sport the volunteer is specialized in. It would be great if the volunteer joins the sports activities and if he or she is able to, even teach a new sport to the children. Depending on the weather, we offer also some outdoor or indoor games, some creative workshops like painting, drawing, baking cookies etc or practicing for a theatre play that will be presented to the parents on special occasions or for a dancing workshop. Of course the children can also play by themselves.
The volunteer can either participate in the existing programm, which is defined in one of the weekly meetings, or lead a workshop by him/her self, together with the staff, on a topic that he/she is familiar with and interested in.
The programme of activities is defined by the staff together with the imputs of the children during the weekly meeting of staff and children. During this meeting the children give their imputs on what they wish to do. The volunteer can also propose activities to the children and like this develop his/her own projects together with the children.
Two weeks per year we go on an holiday-excursion outside of Vienna with the children: in Winter we go skiing and in Summer we go to the countryside. During these weeks, the main thing is to make sure the children have a good time: activities depend on the weather and the location: mainly it is hiking/skiing, swimming, doing games, barbeque etc. The volunteer can help prepare these weeks (inventing games and activities) and help with practical organisational matters, cooking together with the kids and the staff etc. We see this also as an opportunity for the volunteer to see other parts of Austria.
Finally, the volunteer is also going to be part of the meetings of the hort: team meetings (1x per week) where the programme and the specific problems of the children are discussed, meetings with the parents (1x per month) where pedagogical concepts are discussed and specific problems if necessary and meetings with the children (1 x per week) to make sure the children can give imput in the activities, the food, but also about their life. If he or she wants, participation in the team supervision is possible. Some of these meetings are after the opening hours of the school. This brings the average of the working hours for the volunteer to about 30-35 hours per week.
