Resumo: The Day Care Centre is located in the city of Vantaa, which is the Northern-most city of the Finnish Capital City Region also comprising Helsinki and Espoo. Most of Vantaa is either suburban or urban, having a share of 200'000 inhabitants out of the population of one million inside the Finnish Capital City Region. Vantaa is a middle-class suburban city with a large part of its population commuting to Helsinki for work and entertainment. The train and bus connections to other parts of Finland are good and there are plenty of activities in Vantaa - and more can be found in for example in Helsinki.

As the Day Care Centre aims to provide an international environment to the children, it is important to have people from other countries and cultures working with them. This will make the volunteer a valuable person in the kindergarten. One of the tasks of the school being intercultural learning, he/she will have the chance to teach about his/her own cultural and ethnical background. Through regular everyday activities like playing, going out, helping the children with dressing and eating, the volunteer would also be able to teach his/her own language. However, the volunteer would always work as part of a group, never alone.

Perfil: Naturally the volunteer candidate should be interested to work with children. She/he should also be reliable and have some independence even the work is done in teams. In light of the central role of the English language at Y.E.S., it is crucial that the volunteer has a working knowledge of English.

Applicants with educational, social and cultural limitations - such as difficulties created by the location and connectedness of a given country, will be gladly accepted. The personal mentor at work, at freetime and more broadly through the coordinating organisation will provide the volunteer with all the necessary assistance.

Tarefas: The central activity of the volunteer will be assisting in the children's day care and preschool groups. There are three Finnish language groups for children under 4 years old and three English language groups for children between 4 and 5 years of age. There is also two preschool groups. The volunteer will play with the children and can also teach them new games particular to or traditional in his/her own country. His/her tasks will include: reading to the children; taking them out; helping them with dressing and undressing; and helping with eating.

Condições: The volunteer will live in a Finnish host family. In this way she/he will have a unique opportunity to get an insight to Finnish culture, language and habits.

The Day Care Centre will arrange the meals for the volunteer during his/her working day. The volunteer has possibilities to study Finnish during his/her voluntary period. The mentor will regularly meet with the volunteer to check his/her progress and to help in solving any problems - therefore ensuring on-going support. The volunteer will be provided with the necessary training for him/her to carry out the assigned tasks. Attempts will also be made, and assistance will be provided, to help the volunteer to integrate into the local community.
