Resumo: (environment, biodiversity)

The Hosting organization is an environmental organisation, which is active in the region and focuses mainly on the mountainous and semi-mountainous areas.
Our team consists of enthusiastic scientists who love nature, love the place where they live and care about the progress of the region through the protection of nature.

Perfil: Age: 18-30
We accept all candidates without discrimination. The only requirement is a good command of the English language. Additional qualifications, but not essential, would be: driving licence and a degree in biology, environmental sciences or veterinary medicine. But if you do not meet any of the additional qualifications there is absolutely no problem, anyone can support us and join our team!

Tarefas: Your participation in the project activities is organized in a weekly schedule (MondayFriday) that you receive at the end of each week.
In most of the activities you participate together with the employees of the organization but there are also activities implemented only by volunteers.

The hours of participation in the field activities depend on the season and the distance from the village, ranging from 6-8 hours.

The starting time of the activities depends on the season, in winter it may start at 8:00 or 9:00, but in summer due to the heat it starts between 6:00-7:00. Participation in office activities is 6 hours from 9:00-15:00. You will have two days of holiday per month.

The main goal of the organization is the protection of the nature, with an emphasis on birds of prey as being indicators of having good biodiversity.

We implement actions to protect rare bird species and preserve their important habitats. The focus of our activities is on the harmonious coexistence of man and nature. Especially in our region, because its unique natural wealth was created as a result of the traditional agricultural practices of the region, our activities are also targeted at stimulating the rural economy and reducing land abandonment, particularly by young people.
The volunteers will assist in the organization’s goals by participating not only in conservation actions but also in the events organized by WWF, i.e. in the schools of the region and various public agencies, in order to increase awareness regarding the endangered species of the region and strengthen local capacity in an area of Greece that is considered as one of the most remote but yet important, as it is a crossroad of habitats, of people, of countries.

Main Activities Involving Volunteers:
1. Breeding Monitoring of Egyptian and Griffon Vultures in the Thrace Region Monitoring is conducted from April to September for the Egyptian Vulture and from January to July for the Griffon Vulture. Observations are carried out from fixed viewpoints using telescopes to track breeding behavior

2. Monitoring Birds of Prey – Nest Location and Presence Recording
This activity is project-specific and does not occur every year. Volunteers may help locate nests in areas where infrastructure projects (e.g., wind farms, roads) are planned, to inform environmental impact assessments submitted to authorities.

3. Surveying/Monitoring Electricity Transmission Pylons As part of 2023 initiatives, volunteers identify pylons posing electrocution risks to birds by walking along powerlines in important bird areas during spring, summer, and autumn, following specific assessment protocols.

4. Bird Carcass Searches Following Collisions Depending on funding and project prioritization for 20242025, volunteers may assist in locating bird carcasses resulting from collisions with wind turbines or power lines.

5. Assisting in Fitting Transmitters on Vultures and Raptors Primarily during autumn (outside the breeding season), volunteers may help with the capture of vultures and raptors for fitting of satellite transmitters. The birds are released immediately after tagging.

6. Monitoring Bird Transmitter Data This office-based task involves daily tracking of bird movements and welfare through satellite data. If a potential mortality or irregularity is detected, the team visits the location with authorities to perform an autopsy.

7. Bird rescue participation Local residents may report injured birds. Volunteers assist in retrieval, providing first aid, and transporting birds to rehabilitation centers. In minor cases, birds may be cared for temporarily by the team before release.

8. Data Management and Map Creation Office work includes processing monitoring data (e.g., GPS data), creating maps, and organizing photos from trap cameras. This takes place throughout the week and is more concentrated during winter months when fieldwork is limited.

9. Support and Participation in Public Events regularly participates in 3–5 cultural or environmental events annually. Volunteers help plan and carry out interactive activities and games for children and adults, providing an opportunity to engage with the local community.

10. Raising Awareness through Seminars, Campaigns, and Conferences th organization organizes 2–3 events annually aimed at different stakeholders (e.g., local authorities, students, general public). Volunteers may assist in preparing educational materials, invitations, and follow-up tasks such as media coverage and archiving.

11. Designing and Creating Educational and Awareness Materials Volunteers contribute to the preparation of leaflets, PowerPoint presentations, posters, and videos, gaining experience in both planning and production

12. Promoting Volunteering and the European Solidarity Corps (ESC) showcases its activities via media, universities, and local clubs. ESC volunteers often present the program themselves, sharing their experiences and future goals to inspire others.

13. Creating and Monitoring Nest Boxes; Feeding Small Birds in Burned Areas Following the August 2023 fires, the organization is installing nest boxes for small birds and providing food in affected areas. Volunteers help with placement, regular feeding, and monitoring via camera systems.

14. Monitoring Natural Regeneration After the 2023 wildfire, the organization began monitoring the natural regeneration of coniferous forests. Volunteers support this effort through fieldwork and database management.

15. Raptor Monitoring in Valley Large parts of the National Park were burned in 2023, impacting raptor nesting areas. Yhe organization is monitoring raptor populations and nesting behaviors in the Valley (adjacent to the park) to track changes and inform conservation efforts.

16. Monitoring Reforestation Efforts the organziation is restoring a 114.5-hectare area that has been burned three times in the past 15 years by planting native tree species. Volunteers help monitor the growth and survival of the trees, especially during the first critical years.

Condições: During your stay you will be hosted for free in a big house next to the center of the village. This house accommodates all the volunteers of the project with a maximum capacity of 7 people. The house has two floors with two bathrooms (1 on each floor), 4 bedrooms with a bunk bed each, a living room, a kitchen, two balconies, front and back yard. It is fully equipped with internet, central heating system (oil boiler), air conditioning, washing machine, cooking kitchen, hood, oven, fridge-freezer and cooking utensils.

Upon arrival, each volunteer receives two pairs of clean sheets, two pillowcases and a mattress cover, which are returned on the day of departure. The house has blankets that are cleaned each summer, as well as more sheets and pillowcases. There are also clean towels if you want to use them. All volunteers are responsible for keeping the house clean and tidy. The house is a 5' walk from the office and a 7' walk from the Visitor Information.

We provide two monthly allowances, 5€/day FM (Food Money) and 7€/day PM (Pocket Money). The allowances are calculated according to the number of days you participate in the project! For example: FM=250days*5€=1250€,PM=250days*7€=1750€,TOTAL=3000 €). The two monthly allowances are paid at the end of each month according to a procedure that we will explain to you on the spot. There is never a delay in the payment of the two monthly allowances. We also provide many of the household consumables (the list can be found in ΑΝΝΕΧ 1). Food allowances are paid by bank transfer.

The weather is cold in winter and very hot in summer. You will definitely need:
