Resumo: The hosting oganization is Northern Europe’s oldest organic farming school. Our approximately 100 students and future farmers are instructed in domestic animal care, cultivation of plants, technical skills, social studies, economics, production and management.

The school is placed in a very beautiful Danish countryside near water, forest and cultivated fields. Personally and collectively we highly value ecology, community, development, credibility and quality in everything we do.

The students can choose to live at the school. This creates the best possible way of forming a close relationship with each other as well as with the staff. The atmosphere at the school is very informal and the placement will be great for a volunteer who is not afraid of getting his or her hands dirty from digging up vegetables or helping out taking care of the animals in the stables.

At the hosting oganization we have an international program. Classes of this program consists of 70% Danish and 30% foreign students from EU countries. The foreign students live at the school together with the Danish students, creating an international environment. The staff consists of: Agronomist, agricultural technologist, kitchen staff, farmer, IT, leadership, consultant, craftsman etc. In total we are about 25 people working at Kalø. Our staff is used to dealing with intercultural as well as interlinguistic differences appearing among the young people.

Perfil: Age: 18-30

The recruitment process is open to all, but it is preferred that the volunteer has a keen interest in learning about sustainable food systems, organic cooking, and reducing food waste. We will highly value a volunteer who enjoys working in a kitchen environment and is enthusiastic about preparing meals, preserving produce, and contributing to the farm-to-table cycle. A willingness to collaborate, try new things, and bring their own cultural food traditions to the table will be greatly appreciated.

NB. This activity may ultimately be a mixed farming & kitchen position. Thus, applicants must be ready for that. This will be clearly communicated in good time.

Tarefas: At the organization, volunteers in the kitchen will engage in a dynamic program centered around sustainable food systems. The kitchen prepares daily meals for 80-125 people, using organic produce from the school’s farm. Volunteers will assist in meal preparation, food preservation (e.g., pickling, freezing, and drying surplus produce), menu planning, and maintaining a clean and organized kitchen environment. This role emphasizes sustainability, minimizing food waste, and promoting farm-to-table practices.

In general, the volunteer will gain hands-on experience in sustainable kitchen operations, learn about organic food production, and explore how local, seasonal ingredients are integrated into nutritious meals. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to share their own cultural food traditions and recipes, enriching the school’s culinary offerings. While kitchen activities follow a structured schedule, volunteers may occasionally participate in events or activities outside normal hours, with compensatory time off provided.

The volunteer will live at the school alongside the students and be encouraged to integrate into the vibrant community life. The school offers a wide range of student-driven social activities and facilities, including choir, a fitness room, table tennis, pool, and football. The beautiful surroundings invite you to explore the nearby forest, bike or walk in nature, and even take a swim in the ocean. Aarhus, Denmark’s second-largest city, is also easily accessible and offers abundant cultural and leisure opportunities.

Horário: Working hours: 30-38 hours/week

All volunteers save up to 2 holidays every month.

Condições: The volunteer will live and eat at the school together with the students and will be expected to integrate him or herself into the social life as well as the responsibilities at the organization. The school has a large selection of student-driven social activities and facilities such as choir, fitness room, table tennis, pool, football etc. The surrounding nature obviously gives you the possibilities of bathing in the ocean (it might be cold, though), walking or biking in the forest. In Aarhus, you can also find plenty of opportunities for spare-time activities.
