Resumo: The hosting organization is a public primary school with approximately 600 students (aged 6 – 16 years) and 60 employees.
The school consists of an educational section for all students, an after-school program for the youngest students, and a youth club for middle school students. It is one of the largest schools in the municipality. The students come from the local area with various social backgrounds. They bring different experiences and skills, which we aim to unite in a strong community. Many children from the local area participate in sports and other activities in the afternoons and evenings.
Students benefit from an open-plan learning environment where collaboration is key. Three classes in the same year share a house together. The house consists of three rooms without doors and with a joint common area. Typically, all students receive presentations together, after which they work across classes on various activities.
Our school features a thriving musical profile, including a brass band, big band, and an annual theatrical concert.
Weekly morning assemblies bring students and staff together through the joy of singing. The school is part of a character development project that focuses on building ethical, social, and emotional skills among our students. This project emphasizes values such as respect, responsibility, and empathy – values that we also aim to promote through cultural exchange. By welcoming European Solidarity Corps volunteers, we seek to expand these initiatives by incorporating new perspectives and strengthening the intercultural competencies of both students and staff.
We aim to:
- Improve cultural awareness among students and staff.
- Prepare students for globalization, equipping them with skills to work and communicate across borders.
- Promote empathy and respect for diversity through introduction to new perspectives.
- Strengthen intercultural competencies, enriching personal and professional growth for all involved.
- Volunteers will contribute to our school community and also gain experience working in an environment that values creativity, collaboration, and personal development.
Perfil: Age: 18-30
We are looking for two enthusiastic volunteers, who are ready to contribute and immerse themselves in the environment of Balleskolen. We wish that both volunteers:
- Demonstrate initiative, curiosity, and adaptability.
- Are ready to engage with students, collaborate with staff, and bring new ideas to the team and the school.
- Have a strong interest in cultural exchange and the Danish education system.
- Are resilient, open-minded, and eager to develop both personally and professionally.
- View this opportunity as a stepping stone for gaining valuable life experience and skills.
- Are passionate about working with children and young people.
- Are comfortable with classroom management and eager to contribute creative ideas.
We value volunteers who are proactive, mature (preferably 21 years old or older), and open to both learning and contributing to the school. You should be prepared to take part in lesson planning and to actively contribute and bring your ideas to life. Volunteers must take responsibility for their personal and professional growth during their stay.
Volunteers are expected to attend Danish language school in Silkeborg and show a strong commitment to learning the language. This is essential for collaboration and for becoming an integrated part of the school community. They should understand that they will join an already well-functioning and dynamic organisation where daily routines and activities continue to run independently of them. It is important that they are patient, flexible, and ready to fit into the existing structure.
We expect volunteers to see their role as an added value to the school community, someone who enriches and supports the existing team, rather than being dependent on it. Volunteers should also be aware that the beginning might feel challenging, especially due to language differences, but persistence and curiosity will make the experience rewarding.
A genuine interest in building relationships with children is essential, even when communication is difficult. Volunteers should be eager to engage socially and culturally, be open to learning about Danish culture, and take initiative in forming connections and activities.
Volunteers should be motivated to engage in the character development project. They should be excited to contribute to the school’s efforts in working with values such as empathy, respect, and responsibility, both in and out of the classroom. We also prefer that volunteers have an interest in music and want to contribute to the musical profile of the school.
Your schedule will be tailored as much as possible to your interests and skills, allowing you to make a meaningful impact while exploring new opportunities for growth.
Tarefas: Each applicant will be placed in a team that collaborates around a specific grade. They will also participate in after-school activities related to that same age group. As the initial plan, one volunteer will join the team working with primary school students and the after-school program (SFO). The other volunteer will collaborate with the team working with middle school students and the youth club.
Both volunteers will actively engage in school activities during the day and in after-school programs in the afternoon, working alongside staff and students. Their roles will be adapted to their skills and interests, allowing them to make meaningful contributions across different aspects of school life. Volunteers will be integrated into the school’s ongoing character development project, supporting the promotion of values such as empathy, responsibility, and respect both in the classroom and in after-school programs.
Their primary responsibilities include:
- Assisting teachers during lessons and activities.
- Contributing their own ideas to workshops and activities in the school.
- Collaborating with their assigned teams to develop learning and social activities.
- Supporting students in their learning processes during the day.
- Leading or supporting after-school programs such as sports, arts, and music.
- Building meaningful relationships with students and staff.
Volunteers will also have the chance to contribute to the school’s annual theatrical concert and other cultural events, bringing their own creativity and cultural perspectives to the process.
As part of their stay, volunteers are expected to attend a Danish language school. Learning Danish is considered an essential part of the project, as it supports communication, integration, and collaboration with students and staff. The language classes are included as part of the volunteers’ weekly working hours.
Both volunteers will be integrated into the school’s team-oriented environment, where teachers and pedagogues plan and collaborate closely. They will participate in planning meetings, receive support from mentors, and have room to take initiative. Volunteers are encouraged to share songs, games, and traditions from their home countries, enriching the school’s cultural environment, while also learning about the Danish school system.
Horário: Working hours: 30-38 hours/week.
All volunteers save up to 2 holidays every month. However, we expect volunteers to follow the school’s holiday schedule as closely as possible, which in total exceeds the number of holidays accumulated through the ESC program. This way, volunteers are guaranteed to have the days off they are entitled to.
Condições: The volunteer will stay with a local Danish host family.
In the host families the volunteer will be expected to become part of the family and as such take part in the activities and responsibilities in the family. The volunteer will have his/her three meals provided by the host family and/or project. Transport to and from home to the project is covered by the programme.
The volunteers will have his/her meals together with the families and bring a lunch packet to the project.
