Resumo: (Research; Marine Biology Animal Training; Public Outreach)

The hosting organization is a Danish research and outreach center dedicated to marine life in local Danish waters. Located on the harbor in Kerteminde, the centre cares for porpoises and harbor seals and works closely with the nearby Marine Biological Research Center, home to grey seals and a river otter.

The animals live in natural seawater enclosures connected directly to the bay, enabling research in near-wild conditions and giving visitors a unique chance to observe marine mammals up close.

Our mission is to advance research, education, and public awareness to protect marine species and deepen understanding of Denmark’s coastal ecosystems.

The organization has a small but experienced trainer team consisting of:
4 full-time marine mammal trainers
1 zookeeper student
Danish and international interns

Because we collaborate with interns from many countries, our daily working language is English.

The team also values community and cultural exchange. We regularly arrange social gatherings, shared meals, and activities to help international volunteers experience Danish culture and feel included in the team.

Perfil:
We are seeking two full-year volunteers who are:
- Age: 18-30
- Interested in practical work, marine biology, or animal care
- Comfortable with physical tasks such as cleaning, lifting, and outdoor work
- Motivated, responsible, and able to follow protocols
- Comfortable working near water and animals
- Positive team players with good communication skills
- Willing to work mornings, weekends, and holidays
- Ready to work outdoors in all weather
- Able to communicate in English
- Preferably holding a driver’s license (for fish pickups / vet trips)

Tarefas: You will be working closely with and around:

At the research and outreach center
3 harbor porpoises
3 harbor seals

At the Marine Biological Research Center (partner facility next door)
3 male grey seals
1 river otter

These animals participate in:
- Daily training sessions
- Behavioral and acoustic research
- Educational demonstrations
- Health checks and husbandry routines

This is a rare and special opportunity — porpoises are challenging to keep in human care, and research and outreach center is one of the few sites worldwide conducting long-term research with this species.

As volunteer at research and outreach center, you will support the daily care, training, and research of our marine mammals while also helping create a positive experience for the many guests who visit the center.

Your tasks will include:
Cleaning and maintaining animal areas and outdoor enclosures
Working in the fish kitchen (sorting, weighing, and preparing fish)
Assisting trainers during feeding, training, enrichment, and husbandry sessions
Helping set up and participate in research activities
Observing animal behaviour and helping track daily routines
Preparing materials and equipment used in training and research
Supporting trainers and researchers during vet visits and sample handling (when relevant)

When the center is open to the public, you will also help ensure guests have an informative and enjoyable visit by:
- Answering questions about the animals and their behaviour
- Assisting during demonstrations and educational talks
- Directing visitors and helping them understand the work we do at Fjord&Bælt

Horário: working conditions:
Because the animals require care 365 days a year, volunteers must be prepared for:
Early mornings
Work during weekends and public holidays
Outdoor work near the water
Cold, wet, or windy weather conditions (depending on season)
Proper training and guidance will be provided at all times

Condições: Accommodation: apartment with private rooms, shared kitchen and bathroom
