Resumo: Estonian youth work is designed to empower young people, supporting their personal development and active participation in society. It focuses on providing opportunities for young people to explore their potential, gain new skills, and contribute to their communities. The work carried out in Estonian youth centers is structured yet flexible, offering a balanced environment that encourages creativity, responsibility, and independence.

Youth centers in Estonia provide a variety of programs, including workshops, educational activities, social events, and outdoor activities. These centers act as safe spaces where young people can engage in recreational and educational opportunities, build social networks, and receive guidance on personal and social issues. Staff in these centers are dedicated to fostering inclusivity and promoting positive youth development through non-formal education.

While youth work in Estonian is a separate field in Estonia, it is still connected to education and social work. The emphasis is on creating a supportive, structured environment where young people can make decisions, express their opinions, and learn through action. The work can be but is not always project-based, with youth workers collaborating with young people to organize and implement activities that align with their interests and needs. This collaborative approach helps build confidence, resilience, and a sense of responsibility among youth.

Tarefas: For ESC volunteers, working in Estonian youth centers provides a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of young people in a supportive, yet relaxed setting. Volunteers will be involved in planning and facilitating activities, supporting the daily operations of the center, and working closely with local youth to promote engagement and participation. Activities may include playng games, communicating, sports activities, movie nights, different work shops, and or classes and so on. Volunteer’s own interests, hobbies and skills are taken into account and inspire these activities as well. It is a rewarding experience where volunteers can develop valuable skills in communication, event planning, teamwork, and youth empowerment while being part of a welcoming and diverse community.

Though it may seem like a less demanding environment compared to more intensive social work settings, volunteering in Estonian youth centers offers a chance to make a meaningful impact without the high-pressure responsibilities found in other contexts. Volunteers can expect to engage in rewarding work that balances responsibility with personal development, all while fostering a sense of community and belonging among young people.
