Resumo: The project will take place in Vienna. Vienna is the capital of Austria and has about 1.7 million inhabitants. This project is coordinated by Grenzenlos, and the volunteer will be integrated into the MELANGE program. This means that he/she will have the opportunity to meet the 23 other foreign EVS volunteers as well as Austrian returnees. All volunteers will be offered leisure time activities, in order to become acquainted with specifics about Austrian and Viennese culture. There are monthly meetings that provide continuous follow-up of the volunteers and are a social event where current, future and former volunteers can meet. Grenzenlos also organises housing, helps find language courses for the volunteers and offers a mentoring program as well as help with all administrative matters.
The EVS project will take place in our 3 living communities. The volunteer will support the team their with the daily life activities as well as with free time activities with the clients.
The volunteer will be introduced to all activities of the centre and will bring in his/her own interests and talents according to his/her personality.
The normal rules of Komit which apply to our staff are of course also valid for the EVS Volunteers. Part of our Team are Persons giving professional care but also civil servants. There is a clear description of each function. Also there exist Rules of the house according to the housemanagement of the administration of vienna.
The volunteer will be informedon the rools for the stuff and specific rools according to the different needs of our clients, wich will be explained to and respected by the volunteer. No Alcohol during the time giving care to handicaped persons in our group.
Perfil: Within the frame of MELANGE all young people are welcome to send their applications to the coordinating organization Grenzenlos.
The vacant placement of the project will be send out to all partners and networks (ICYE, YouthNetWorks) of Grenzenlos. All applications will be collected and forwarded to the Team of Komit. The team will select their preferred volunteer. The applicants are welcome to inform about the current procedures an ask questions at any time. Upon request, the hosting placement can be asked to give reasons for their selection.
Basically no specific skills are needed to take part in the project. The volunteer should be able to communicate, active, respectful, willing to learn how to deal with spastic and mental handicaped people, trustable and full of ideas and willing to work between 15 and 22 o’clock..
To make the communication easier with the staff, knowledge of English or basic German would be an advantage, a driver’s licence is not a must, but would be welcome.
Volunteers with special needs: As we are an Institution, caring for people with handicap, the infrastrukture for a person using the wheelchair exists in general. For a volunteer with handicap it would be necessary, that he/she is able to move without personal help, in the house without heavy electric weelchair and to eat and to go to toilette without help.
The inclusion of volunteers with physical disabilities always needs a good preperation. As every volunteer has different needs and possibilities decicion has to be intividualy after getting information and contact to the interested person.
Tarefas: The Volunteer gets to know an Institution, caring for people with phisical- and/or mental handicaps. He/She is able to get use in contact with the people living here and to get praktice in cultural exchange.
The volunteer will learn more about Komit`s structure and philosophy. The volunteer will also bring his/her own culture into our team and to the clients and vice versa. We also try to speak mainly German with the volunteer to support the studying of German.
Lifestyle means for us everything that influences our quality of life: clothing, leisure time, food as well as music, culture, sports, having friends and celebrating parties. Through an encounter with a young person from another country, a new aspect will be added to the lives of our clients and will support the goals summarized above. The volunteer will have partly the same issues that are important for them (individuality, own responsibility) but will also confront us with cultural differences, that will enforce a high flexibility and tolerance from our clients and from the staff. Through living daily life together, talking, discussing, cooking, playing, shopping or going out will bring two cultures together.
The volunteer will have one main group to work but in agreement between the volunteer and the team there is also the possibility to be at an other group 1 or 2 days in a week. (Example: 3 days Antonigasse, 2 days Döblinger Hauptstrasse –the weekley scatural will be agreed on both partners.)
Horário: The daily programme starts with a meeting of staff, where the volunteer is included. During this meetings activities and working hours are defined.
15-18 o’clock. leisure time activity: some clients have a therapy in the afternoon, some have free time. In this area, the volunteer could help composing the activities: sporting, shopping, playing or listening to music. One aspect of theses activities would be ‘how is this done at home?’, ‘what do I like to do?’, ‘what can we do together?’
18-20 o’clock: dinner: Dinner is prepared with and by our clients and of course is an important part of a culture. The volunteer can on a regular basis introduce some specialty from his/her country, but can also learn him/herself about the Austrian cooking!
20-22 o’clock: The evenings are free for everybody. Often, a group talk evolves from just sitting together. The volunteer can share thoughts and experiences and his/her language and culture (through photo’s, video’s music).
Some of the weekends trips are organised: going to concerts, the disco, practising sport, visit musea or going to the cinema. The volunteer is more than welcome to help organising these activities, or other activities within his/her interest. This is a possibility for the volunteer to explore Vienna together with our clients.
Condições: We do not host volunteers aged under 18. The volunteer will never have the sole responsibility and will not be left alone during the project. The volunteer will also get clear instructions whom to contact in emergency cases. If there are Problems, the volunteer can talk to the mentor of the projekt each week at preconcerted times. We want the volunteer to take part at the team meeting each week to get all nessesary information and to be able to talk about plans or difficunties.
As being part of the MELANGE programm regular formal and non-formal meetings with the staff of Grenzenlos whos coordinates the melange programm and the project mentor are planned.
Grenzenlos staff will intervene and provide support and deal with crisis management with both the volunteer and host organisation and will in turn report, if necessary, will liaise with the volunteer's family.
The volunteers will be provided with the needed emergency contacts in Vienna and a phone through which, in case of emergency, the Staff of Grenzenlos can be reached.
