Resumo: Project environment: profile of the organisation and local community
In 1989 a group of organisations of the area of Vallecas decided to work together and carry out an educational and pedagogical frame for leisure and so creating the Coordinadora Infantil y Juvenil de Tiempo Libre de Vallecas. The origin and evolution of the member organisations has been varied, but they all have in common their worry to improve the quality of life and education of children and youth of the city area. At the beginning we were few, and now we are 23 organisations.
With time we have found new intervention areas. We currently work with youth and children in leisure programmes, school monitoring and support, individual monitoring and sport activities. We have specific programmes for family intervention which vary from self-help groups and parents school to individual attention. In the working area, some entities have working integration centres and pre-working workshops.
In the entity we have a European area for youth which has been working for years informing and counselling youth and organisations about the Youth Programme. In this line, we have agreed with the City Hall of Madrid the start of the Europa Joven of San Blas.
LOCAL COMMUNITY:
Vallecas is formed by two districts, Puente de Vallecas (240,917 inh.) and Villa de Vallecas (65,162 inh.). Its inhabitants are known for its solidarity and demanding character.
It is a working class area. Vallecas started to grow extremely in the 50's due to the immigration of people from poor areas to Madrid. Small houses were constructed; the streets were of mud and they had no organised structures. In the 70's small blocks were constructed; in Entrevías and El Pozo colonies of detached houses were constructed. In the 80's the area suffered degradation due to drugs and delinquency. In the 90's big areas of small houses were demolished in Palomeras and El Pozo to build modern buildings, parks, big streets,… in the named "Madrid Sur", with the Assembly of Madrid and the Mall Madrid Sur. Currently it is one of the city areas with the highest number of inhabitants (over 300,000) in Madrid. The new expansion area of Vallecas is planning to host over 100,000 in over 25,000 apartments.
The Centro Europa Joven of San Blas is in the district of San Blas, a city area with a similar story to that of Vallecas, with people with low incomes. It currently hosts very poor areas with the new city extension for the middle class. It is a very large area and, as such, hosts citizens from many different places.
The Centro is located in the so called educational campus of San Blas, as there are different educational entities in it (for all levels). We have other resources for youth and the rest of the population, like a cultural centre, youth centre, libraries, sport centres,….
This is a project in which volunteers may carry out different activities and learn from them, as well as enriching our activities. We offer volunteers the chance of participating in the activities they want, in and outside the organisation, that is, of enabling their integration in the city, knowing people and finding their place here as soon and easily as possible.
Regarding the project activities, volunteers will progressively acquire responsibilities, always under the supervision of the team with whom they work, so their activity consists on support to regular activities.
Perfil: Profile of the volunteer(s) and selection process:
We offer our placements through different channels. General information: http://ec.europa.eu/youth/evs/aod/hei_en.cfm All candidates shall look at it to find existing information.
They are also published in: www.youthnetworks.eu and www.youthforeurope.eu and in a yahoo group of EVS "sending and hosting organizations" we belong to.
Volunteers:
- Motivated to participate in our project -Aware of their activities and responsibilities. -Aware of their work being a support, without forgetting their experience, motivation and abilities in order to have more responsibility and better develop the own skills.
The previous work of the sending organisation is very important and we will ensure that a good recruitment is done, paying special attention to their motivation and pre-departure training. Collaboration and trust between the organisations is very important, as well as monitoring and support of volunteers before, during and after their EVS.
In the selection process the priority for us is to asses the true level of motivation form the candidate, that he/she will be aware of the responsibilities derived from the Programme not only to do with the activities but also with the practical aspects of living in a foreign city such as Madrid: respect of the flat where they will live, favouring co-existence,....
We will ask for a motivation letter. They are informed about all hosting conditions of the project. Flexibility and motivation are an asset.

Condições: Prevention of risks, security and protection:
Many matters are taken into account to avoid risks:
- Provide volunteers with appropriate support throughout the project (this includes sending and host organisations). Fluid communication between the organisations (host and sending)
- Clearly define role of role and tasks of volunteers. We expect volunteers to respect the rules of the organisation (i.e. informing about holidays 2 weeks before them, etc.).
- Training, potential problems, illnesses, alergies,... are taken into account when organising tasks.
- The individual needs of volunteers will also be taken into account (i.e. special diets) and accommodation will be provided according to the age and sex of volunteers. The living conditions shall respect health and the according security rules.
Regarding responsibility, health and security of volunteers will also be taken into account by the person responsible of the local project; EVS volunteers will be provided with the information, training and means.
The person responsible will take into account these measures for possible changes or improvements.
During the week of cultural immersion, we show them the health system, where to go in case of illness,... and, if necessary, we will accompany them to the doctor the first times. Volunteers shall bring the European Health card and their organisation shall manage their AXA insurance, so they are perfectly covered. Additionally, the organisations in Vallecas have a civil responsibility insurance in which volunteers will also be included, covering the activities they carry out in them.
In case of emergency volunteers may contact the mentors 24h/day.
EVS volunteers are responsible for their own security and health, as well as for that of the people affected by their actions at work, according to their training and the instructions received.
