Resumo: This project is divided into 2 parts: working with children (in Kindergarten Velo-Vocha) and working with older people (Help at Home Velo Vocha)

The EVS volunteer's role will be to provide additional support to the instructors and other staff at the host organizations/ hosting projects, working closely with qualified staff who will provide support and supervision at all time. This provides the opportunity to the EVS volunteers to share their own culture within their projects and with the local community. This will bring a new, international dimension which will benefit everyone.
The aim of hosting international volunteers is to establish an exchange of knowledge and to let young people know about this opportunity that the Youth in Action program provides. International volunteering is good to bring different cultures together, to diffuse the existence of development projects and to exchange experiences and knowledge. A volunteer from a foreign country could be an excellent opportunity for our local community, mainly for the youngsters to overcome language and cultural difficulties and to learn from each other. Moreover these projects give great opportunity for cooperation with the staff and the members of the organization and will be benefit for our local volunteers, because by working together with someone who comes from a foreign country, will learn the values of tolerance, equality and acceptance.

Tarefas: Help at Home

Help at home’ is a social service program that aims to provide organized and systematic support to elderly and people with special needs

The profile of the program is like the ‘home care’ of UK and the Scandinavian countries by giving a new form of social care of the citizens
We provide advice and psychological support to elderly, nursing, housekeeping support, company, shopping, paying bills, medical support and other services

These services are provided with regular visits in the home of the elderly according to their needs The program addressed in particular elderly people and people with special needs with priorities:

- they cannot support themselves totally
- They need special treatment
- they live lonely and isolated
- they don’t have enough economical sources

The main goal of ‘Help at home’ program is that these people to be able to stay in their everyday life in their environment and to increase their quality of life.

We are absolutely convinced that especially the work of volunteers makes an important contribution to public efforts for the solution of problems of socially discriminated and disabled people.

We aim the volunteer and our patients to learn from each other, to get a mutual enrichment, in the same time to build bridges between the young and the former generation, and between nationalities, cultures and to develop the volunteers’ understanding of different cultures and situations, which takes to a personal growth of the volunteers themselves.

Proposed activities for EVS volunteers:

1) The volunteers will help the social worker in checking the elderly people’s living conditions (they will visit them and check their economy conditions, how they eat, if they need something for their everyday life, their living standard if it is right, or they don’t have anything from the first needs, assess their problems, and try to solve them etc.) (15%)
2) The volunteers will help in the assistants’ work (the role of the volunteer consist of supporting the assistants in the carrying out of the services, bringing the food for the elderly people, if it’s necessary cooking, help in cleaning their home, dishing, washing their clothes, arrange their beddings, put new bedding, ironing, give them help if they are bedridden etc.) (40%)
3) The volunteers will take part twice a week in the activities of the ‘club of elderly’ in the Municipality of Velo-Vocha (KAPI)(40%)
4) The volunteers will participate in organizing and taking part in trips, excursions for the elderly people .(5%)

Horário: The volunteer will collaborate 35 hours per week during 5 days a week. However, the schedule can change according to the activities in the hosting organisation.

The tasks for each volunteer will be adjusted to his/her personal abilities and needs. We would like to stress that none of the tasks can be seen as employment substitution, moreover we would like to stress the importance of giving ideas, taking initiatives by the volunteer. The host and the coordinating organization is open for new ideas and support the initiatives.
The volunteers will be involved in 30 hours of EVS activities and 3 to 5 hours of language training course per week.

Condições: 1

Formação: Our objective is not only to help the staff but also to enrich the life of the elderly people, who are often lonely, develop the work through the volunteer’s different perspective, to develop an intercultural dialogue and tolerance, to make the youngsters responsible for other people.

Furthermore the volunteers will receive knowledge and skills in the social field, which they could eventually use in the future in a professional way. The EVS young volunteers will be encouraged to get nearer the old people’s world and share the experiences of living in uncomfortable situations thus growing and developing their own capabilities in listening and taking care of the elderly people. The volunteers will have experience in practice how to show solidarity with other people through their helping and assisting the elderly in all practical tasks. A social, cultural and a personal process of learning will give the volunteer the opportunity to see their own situation in a new perspective. Through the service the volunteers will get to know both the national characteristics of care system and the common European values. For these elderly people the value of the solidarity, the respect, the taking care is more significant in their life than for other people.

The host organisation gives special support for volunteer through the supervisor, to encourage the volunteers by developing of own project and continual support of volunteer during the project.
From the staff the volunteers will get a high standard support and training, they will prepare them for the activities, tasks. The volunteers will follow training courses with the social worker about how to support and work with disadvantaged elderly, and people with special needs. The assistants give support to their work in the home of the elderly people. The volunteers will work in teams with the staff and the local volunteers. In order to facilitate their work and integration, volunteers will have an obligatory Greek language course from the beginning of their voluntary service by a private teacher.
