Resumo: Impressions of EVS volunteer Catharina from Austria who was volunteering in this Shelter from the beginning of January 2011 till the beginning of July 2011 (6 months):

"I am working in the Caritas Mother and Child Care Shelter, and I am looking after babies while mothers have to go to lessons or if they have to go to somewhere else. I also cook sometimes with mothers and I am thinking about some little other projects I can do together with mothers to get more contact to them. But it`s a bit difficult, because they are not talking English because of a bad education, and I am not able to communicate in Lithuanian. Sometimes this problem is quite hard for me, because I really want to talk to them, to talk about the babies or just to get to know them better. But sometimes they try to speak some English words, then I am allways really happy, because so I can see, that they also want to talk to me. It would be also nice to communicate with them, to get to know their problems. Most of time I even don't know why the mothers are here, which special problems they had. But when I know it I always feel very sorry for them and have to think about it a lot. I enjoy the work there, I really fell in love with the babies and I hope that I can manage sometime to talk more to the mothers.“

Perfil: At least 18 years old, preferrably older than 22 or more (because of taking care after the babies).
Open to social risk group clients.
Preferably tolerant to religion (we belong to Vilnius achdiocese).
Interested in working with women and small babies (knowledge is not so necessary, willingness is).

Tarefas: Activities for the volunteer:
• Assisting mothers in the daily childcare.
• Assisting the staff in developing life skills of the target group.
• Help to manage daily activities in the shelter (e.g. to cook for common lunch, keep the shelter in order etc.).
• Teaching foreign languages to mothers.
• Raise the self-awareness of the mothers and cultural exchange.
• Help to organise promotional events to get a better contact to the local community.
• Help to organise leisure time, camps and festivals for the community of the shelter.
• Assistance in fund-raising for different projects.
• Solving of technical problems, or helping with the reparation of shelter if needed.
• Cooperating with other volunteers.
• Personal initiatives.

Although the EVS is open to all young people from 18 to 30 years, it has a special focus on young people with less opportunities, so please write us if you think that you meet any criteria of less opportunities.
