Bitola is the second largest city in Macedonia. It's located at an altitude of 600m, at the foot of the Pelister mountains with over 80,000 inhabitants, while the entire Bitola municipality numbers over 106,000 people. It is the regional, economic, adminsitrative, cultural and university center of southwestern Macedonia. The University "St. Kliment Ohridski" in Bitola, comprises of six faculties and two colleges, and 5,000 students are enrolled. There is a number of cultural institutions as well. The best known among them is the Bitola Theater, which has won the highest theater accolades at many festivals in the country and abroad. Bitola is the organizer of the "Manaki Brothers" international cinematographers festival, devoted to the work of the first film cameraman in the Balkans and achievements in the art of filmmaking. Bitola also hosts the international art event entitled 'Small Bitola Monmartre' , Bitola summer festival, Bitola Open City art festival and the Interfest Festival of Classical Music. Bitola experiences a large amount of brain drain since the most promising young people usually leave for Skopje-the capital of Macedonia or other countries in search of opportunities.
