Resumo: The Rest Home "Pietro Zangheri" is a non-profit organisation, recognised as an IPAB (Institute for public assistance and charity) by the Italian Government.
The institute lodges 300 old people (158 self-sufficient and 142 non self-sufficient) who live in 14 small flats for married couples and 173 bed rooms, all equipped with independent hygienic services, placed in the 5 units the rest home is composed of. Every unit has its own leisure time facilities and common dining rooms. The cinema-theatre having 250 seats, a large hall at the ground floor, a library containing 5.000 books, a church, a hairdresser, a bar and a room for occupational therapy, where the elderly can carry out small houseworks in order to recreate the home milieu they once had, are at the guests' disposal. Furthermore, the rest home provides access to common use facilities such as an outpatients' department, a physiokinesitherapy gym, a gym for motory activities (both with a specialised personnel) and a laundry.
The average age of the rest home's guests is 84: 83 for self-sufficient old people and 86 for non self-sufficient old people. Internal regulations, whose drawing up also included the participation of elderly people themselves, rule the life of the rest home in order to let everyone organise one's life according to one's way of being and, at the same time, to feel involved in the community's life. Rules do not foresee any timetable to respect, except for meals time. The aged have the opportunity to furnish their lodging with their own furniture, to connect a phone line, to use the laundry and the small kitchens for their own needs as well as a personal car parking.
The permanent staff is composed of a secretary, 6 clerks, a coordinator, 13 cooks, a laundress and 3 assistants, a linen maid and 7 R.A.A. (people in charge of assistance activities) 15 professional nurses, general practitioners of the national health system, 2 physiotherapists operating with the national health system, 75 ADB (general assistants), 20 general attendants, 2 workers and a keeper are currently working for the rest home. The whole staff provides the guests of the rest home with accomodation assistance (meals, laundry, cleaning and tidying up of the room as well as of the common areas); day and night care assistance; nursing service and an animation and recreational programme. The latter is usually carried out in the cinema-theatre or in the ground floor hall where around 150/200 guests (the non self-sufficient included) come together. The animation programme foresees movies/TV programmes showing on large screen; bingo and other recreational initiatives; dialect or comic plays performed by local theatre companies, music shows. During the summer daily entertainment activities such as bingo and games proposed by qualified animators take place in the park, sometimes also by involving music bands or folk groups and by organising open air picnics.
The centre is placed in the old town of Forlì and is divided into different units, every one of them are located in different communicating buildings. The global area is of 24.000 square metres, whose 18.000 corresponding to park and gardens.
Forlì is a little town with about 110.000 inhabitants, situated in the south part of Emilia Romagna, at 63 km from Bologna, the regional capital, and at half an hour by car from the Adriatic coast, well-known for its famous seaside resorts such as Milano Marittima, Cervia, Rimini and Riccione. From Forlì, it is also possible to reach Ravenna, the capital of the Byzantine art, and Faenza, famous for its ceramics in a very short time. Forlì's rail way is well connected to the main Italian cities and offers a large number of daily arrivals and departures. Furthermore, Forlì is a town really built for people, rich in public green areas and provided with suitable lanes for moving by bike. This means of transport is so widespread, that it reminds of the little Dutch and Japanese towns. Because of the renowned University of Bologna, Forlì has been hosting, in the last 10 years, more than 9.000 students belonging to various courses: International and Diplomatic Sciences, School for Interpreters and Translators, Economics and Business and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
In the last few years this town has registered a progressive increase in the presence of foreigners, from EU and from outside EU, for studying, working and social reasons who have brought the local community to acquire a higher awareness of the international and European dimension of their reality and of the necessity to relate with this new set from a cultural, social, religious and economical point of view.
Tarefas: The European volunteers hosted in the Rest Home Pietro Zangheri will organise their service in work shifts in which they will carry out the activities: the morning shift is from 8.00 to 14.00 and the afternoon shift is from 13.30 to 19.30. During the period following their arrival the two volunteers will be supported and share the same shifts so as to acquaint themselves with their function, the structure, the guests and the activities. In this formative period, the volunteers will be more followed by the person in charge (the coordinator Lorenza Ridolfi) and the other members of the staff. Once achieved a certain autonomy and awareness of their role, the volunteers will start switching so that they will cover all the day. In absence of special needs or agreements between volunteers, the shifts will assigned by the coordinator. On the occasion of parties or special events the volunteers will be asked to participate to the same shift.
If the volunteers will be asked to work in the weekend, on festival days or out of the normal timetable they will agree with the coordinator on making up for the hours.
The activities scheduled for the volunteers are obviously linked to the guests' life on the Rest Home, to their timetable and habits.
Activities programmed for the morning: ~
Volunteers will start the service at 8 o' clock, time scheduled for breakfast of the elderly. Volunteers will support the staff on breakfast's distribution and will help people with more difficulties in eating by themselves. After that they will have breakfast too. After breakfast the volunteers will help the elderly to move from the dining room to the common hall. As they are many and some of them have serious motory difficulties this and the other movements take a lot of time.
From 9.00 to 11.30 the elderly are in turn committed to therapies and examinations inside and outside the Rest Home, physiotherapy sessions, massages, baths and personal hygiene. The volunteers' task will be to support the staff in organising the old people's movements and to facilitate them, by helping physically those with serious motory difficulties.
As an alternative, or when this movements won't be necessary, volunteers can stay in the hall doing animation activities with the aged in support to the professional animator, such as:
" Reading and commenting the main news on the newspaper. This activity is realised almost every day and the volunteers, by their active participation, will not only know better the guests of the Rest Home, but they will also improve their knowledge of the Italian language and culture.
" Conversation and listening with each elderly or with groups. This activity favours the volunteers to better know the elderly, to find a way to communicate, especially at the beginning when they are not able to speak Italian yet, and to get acquainted with them and gain their confidence.
" Accompanying blind guests inside the Home.
" Under the supervision of the qualified physiotherapy staff, volunteers will support the animator in the realisation of physical training for the guests, to be carried out in the gyms equipped for this purpose, with the aim to stimulate the residual strength of the aged.
" Support to the animator in the organisation and realisation of group's games such as "La ruota della Fortuna" or crosswords, in which almost every aged person participates. These games are aimed at both entertain the elderly and keep alive their cognitive skills.
" Literature workshop. In this space, aged people come together in order to read and comment poems and other literary pieces, collected in the rich library of the institute. Among the elderly there are many passionate about the literature and some ex writers. Volunteers could also introduce poetic works of their countries (translated in Italian of course), and foster their knowledge of the Italian culture and at the same time, thanks to a common discussion, to compare with elderly and carry out an important exchange both intergenerational and intercultural.
Volunteers will support the animator in the organisation and realisation of animation activities for elderly, sometimes taking active part in it, trying with their enthusiasm to stimulate and involve the aged as much as possible.
If the weather is good, some activities will be carried out outside: volunteers can accompany the elderly to the Piazza Saffi market in Forlì, not far from the Rest Home, or to do some shopping, or walking around the Rest Home park.
At 11.45 approximately the elderly will gather and move to the dining room, assisted by the staff and the volunteers.
At 12 o' clock volunteers will help in the meal distribution, paying special attention to old people with physical disabilities.
After lunch, volunteers will accompany old people to their own room for a little sleep of about two hours and keep company to those who preferred to stay awake. Once this task accomplished, at about 13.30, volunteers will have lunch too, before finishing their shift at 14.00.
Activities planned for the afternoon:
Volunteers will start the service at 13.30 and will have lunch at the same time with the volunteers of the morning shift.
At about 14.30 the animation programme of the Rest Home planned by the professional animator will start.
The activities currently planned for the afternoon animation programme are the following ones:
" If the weather is good, volunteers can accompany the elderly walking around the Rest Home park, or, if planned, go out of the structure for a group walk in the city centre, to do some shopping or eat an ice-cream.
" Support to the staff specialised on the organisation and realisation of creative and handicraft workshops and of the occupational therapy, in order to encourage the aged creativity and manual skills and recreate, through small houseworks, their family environment and their own habits. Volunteers will have the opportunity to use this space to provide practical support to the old people, paying particular attention to those having disabilities.
" The Pietro Zangheri Rest Home disposes of a big theatre room where it's possible to project films and to involve a big number of aged. The volunteers can choose with the elderly which film project and watch it with them.
" On Fridays there is the regular meeting with bingo: volunteers will have to set up and distribute the game's material, arrange the room and follow the game.
" Recreational activities such as cards game, checkers and other board games will help the old people to keep an active mind. It will be possible for the volunteers to participate in it and to take advantage of these activities to know better the elderly.
The activities will end around 18.30. At this time the guests are getting ready for the dinner. Volunteers will help them moving to the dining room where dinner will be served at 19.
During the dinner volunteers' tasks are the same planned for breakfast and lunch.
The shift ends when the guests have finished the dinner, at about 19.30.
Volunteers can suggest new activities both on the animation programme and with regard to their own personal project: the Pietro Zangheri Rest Home will offer their spaces and resources in order to promote potential volunteers' personal initiatives, such as the development of special handicraft workshops, the organisation of artistic and cultural events like for example photographic exhibitions, concerts or stage shows.

Condições: Service offered to the volunteers:
The coordinator of the Rest Home Pietro Zangheri will provide the European volunteers with her support for the entire duration of their service and will assure the volunteers decent living and working conditions. The volunteers will have two main reference point inside the host organisation. The coordinator, Lorenza Ridolfi, is indicated as contact person inside the organisation and is in charge of receiving and introducing them to the members of the staff and the guests of the Rest Home, of supporting them (especially in their first months of service) and of ensuring the right activities implementation. As the volunteers will be mainly involved in the animation activities, they will be often in touch also with the animator who will help and support them to enter step by step in their role: while during the first period the volunteers will be introduced to the activities foreseen, as soon as they will get accustomed they will have the opportunity to share their ideas with the animator, help her in planning the animation programme and propose new activities.

Role of the volunteers:
The European volunteers will be mainly involved in the animation programme of the Rest Home "Pietro Zangheri": they will integrate and support the professional animator in the organisation and implementation of the activities foreseen . They will be invited to propose new activities and initiatives or to develop those already existing, sharing one's experiences, background and personal interests with the staff and the elderly. They will also support the staff in carrying out tasks such as meals distribution, help the aged with motory difficulties, conversation, walking, listening etc. in order to establish a relationship based on trust and mutual exchange with the elderly who will surely take new spurs from the presence of young people.
The volunteers won't be asked to do any hygienic, health care task, or any other exercise which requires appropriate skills.
The Pietro Zangheri Rest Home often organises special events for its guests: picnic in the Rest Home park, birthday's parties for the guests, Christmas' and Carnival's parties, folk concerts, theatre or dancing shows. Volunteers, according to the Rest Home needs, can support the staff on the organisation of these events: form the room's organisation to the elderly's involvement in the events, from the accompaniment of the guests to the rooms used as bar for the distribution of drinks to the participants.
If volunteers want an active role during these events or other activities outside the service hours or in the weekend, they can make up for the free hours in the following days, by an agreement with their responsible
