Resumo: Birstonas is a resort town in the south of Lithuania situated on Nemunas River. The city is located 39 km to south of Kaunas and 92 km from capital of Lithuania Vilnius. Birštonas received its city rights 1529, and was appointed a city in 1966.
General area of the municipality is 124 sq. m. The area of Birštonas town is 13 sq. m. The municipality consists of Birštonas town and Birštonas elderate. Over 5300 inhabitants live in Birštonas Municipality. The major part of inhabitants, about 3200, live in the town, whereas the rest in 46 villages of Birštonas elderate.
Birštonas is surrounded by pine forests and the Nemunas River. Some hills offer nice views of the Nemunas River. There are also shops, police department, library, Culture centre, clinic, pharmacy, book store, schools, museums, cafes, restaurants and the City Hall. There are many apartments and rare houses.
Birštonas is known for its mineral water. This water is used by sanatoriums for mineral water pools and baths. Sanatoriums offer halo therapy, therapeutic mud bathes, mineral water pools, baths, massages, and wide range of curative procedures. Birštonas has hotels and country homesteads, adapted for rural tourism. Birštonas is one of few Lithuanian resorts.

Like in many smaller Lithuanian towns and cities daily life in Birštonas is quiet, especially in winter. Nevertheless, Birštonas has advantages as sanatoriums and other resort amenities work all year round constantly inviting visitors. In terms of economical situation, Birstonas falls into the same category of many other smaller towns of Lithuania. Being a resort, Birstonas is more used to seeing foreigners, especially in summer. Thus there is a bigger chance of being able to communicate in other languages than just Lithuanian or Russian. The youth of Birstonas is quite active, many of them are part of Birstonas youth club (http://www.bjk.lt/). However, there is no EVS community in the town. To meet more colleagues, volunteers would have to travel to the nearest bigger city of Kaunas (40 km). Apart from essential city institutions, Birstonas has 7 bars/cafes/restaurants, a few shops, hotels, sanatoriums, winter skiing resort. Prices in town vary depending on the season. Volunteer will be provided with a private room (bed sheets, furniture provided) and shared facilities. Candidates should not expect additional services such as cable TV or internet connection readily available at the accommodation.

Perfil: Birstonas library is ready to host active and motivated volunteers. The library is visited by many different people, including foreign tourists, therefore candidates are expected to be communicative, able to adapt to different situations, have skills of spoken and writing English.
All applications will be evaluated based on how well they suit the general profile of the EVS volunteer and specific requirements of the library.
The Public Library of Birstonas is open to work with every organization having the status to send EVS.

Tarefas: First of all Birštonas library is more than just a library. Since 1999 it's been increasingly becoming and functioning as a cultural centre too. The library pursues many activities, and a lot of them are available for EVS volunteer having in mind the non-formal and non-professional profile of the service.

Through integration to the library activities (see bellow) the volunteer will have an opportunity to learn how public libraries operate in Lithuania, specific skills and methods to effectively provide the local community with information they are interested in. In general, volunteer will improve his/her communication skills, intercultural and social competences learn a new language, improve his/her project management skills through implementing personal initiatives. On the personal level volunteer will learn to live more independently, due to a new cultural situation find alternative solutions to everyday problems, will be able to handle pressure better and increase his/her comfort zone. The learning process will be ensured by trying to provide the volunteer with tasks matching his abilities and constantly monitoring the progress. Regular evaluation and planning meetings are foreseen too.

Volunteer will be understood as assistant, although fields of personal responsibility will be identified too. A lot depends on the volunteer and his/her willingness to be active and creative.
The field of volunteer activities will largely include communication with visitors and staff, assistance in organizing of events, sharing ideas, assistance to the other sections and departments of the library.

The volunteer would be able to:
- Work with children and youth at the library's day centre (sharing intercultural traditions, opening discussion groups, multimedia evenings etc.)
- Teach foreign language (to staff and local community) through daily communication and informal lessons.
- Help in event organization. The library hosts events roughly once per month. It is also an active participant to the city's events. Additional volunteer initiative will be welcome too.
- Visit and give assistance to the other departments of the library. At least once per month the volunteer will be able to visit the three other detachments of Birstonas library bringing updates from the city and meeting local people. Smaller libraries would very much welcome volunteer initiative to liven up the atmosphere in the village.
- Cooperate with youth clubs and schools in the area. The library keeps close contact with local schools and youth clubs. Volunteer would be able to thematically expand these contacts introducing "Youth in Action", other volunteers and other mobility programmes of the EU.
- Update the library's website with a new foreign language option. Later, when the volutneer is more at ease with the Lithuanian language, he could try to translate the website to his mother tongue. Working in library the volutneer would have dictionaries and other language resources at hand.
- Build iternational partnerships and realize personal initiatives and ideas.

Volunteer will also assist in organizing the library's events (e.g. the international poetry festival "Peotry Spring and others), introduce his/her own culture and traditions, discuss about books with the library visitors, help painter E.Ivaskeviciute during activities with children, help keep the library funds clean, have an opportunity to involve in projects implemented by Birstonas gymnasium, arts school, Birstonas youth club.
