Resumo: The hosting oganization is an educational youth center developed in 2010. Our mission is to contribute to the development of children and young people, using the scout method. The scout method has certain elements: nature, scout law and promise, personal progress, community involvement, mentoring & support, learning by doing, team system, symbolic framework. This way, youth are encouraged to be the main agents of their own development as confident, motivated, responsible, and open individuals. We develop weekly non-formal activities with the children and young people from the village.
Working and learning in this environment can be challenging: the children come from difficult, poor families, where parents often showcase verbal violence and not only, discriminatory behaviors, disrespectful attitudes towards nature.
Some of these families are broken either because of divorce or because one of the parents goes to work abroad for more money. The main cause is a low level of education among the adults in the community which, being the main examples for children, often do not motivate them to go to school, learn and strive to make a different living. More than this, there are many punctual projects in the area which provide material support to these families in the form of clothes, shoes, school supplies, food, etc.
This sort of periodic social aid caused the development of an attitude where they take this help for granted and even expect it. When we came with a different perspective, of helping them through educational activities, they didn't understand this as help as long as they were not given something material. All of these caused the children to have a very short attention span and unusually serious discipline problems. However, this way the volunteers have a greater impact on the community and also on their personal development, acquiring extensive experience and know-how on social inclusion, non-discrimination, community building, interculturality, environment protection, and equal chances. Apart from these activities, we are also planning events and summer camps for scouts and young people who come from all over the country and from abroad.
Perfil: Age: 18-30
We are looking for young people between 18 and 30 years, open to learn, motivated to help a rural community, creative and open minded, interested in working with children and young people, also Rroma communities, learn about Transylvanian heritage, about ceramics, help fight discrimination, poor education. These young people should also want to improve their own life skills and be curious to learn about village life and working/ living in a multicultural environment. No prior knowledge, education or experience is required. Just willingness to learn.
Tarefas: The project will help the community to overcome: discrimination among children & youth, school dropout, and the pollution in the area. Volunteers, with the help of a multicultural team, will offer non-formal educational activities, will be involved in local projects, and work on their personal & professional growth.
To mitigate discrimination, we’ll have scout activities with kids from various social and ethnic groups. To prevent early school dropout, we help children with the basics of the school curriculum in a fun way and also improve their foreign language and social skills through after school activities. Regarding nature, we are teaching kids to love and protect plants and animals and respect the environment.
At the same time, we aim to develop the abilities of the volunteers by involving them in creating educational activities and managing a social entrepreneurship (Ceramica, a pottery workshop of the Scout Centre).
Condições: Accommodation:takes place at the 2 village houses with yards. Both have big bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, modern facilities, running water, gas, electricity, and Wi-Fi. Food: the volunteers will get a monthly food allowance. Usually, we go shopping and then cook together, but the volunteers will also have the opportunity to manage their food.
Travel: the volunteers will book the tickets from their hometown to Romania, preferably Sibiu. From there, there is a 40 min ride to Nocrich village, by car or bus. We will reimburse the ticket costs according to the distance band.
