Resumo: The Association is a non-profit organisation with headquarters in A Coruña. A Coruña has over 230,000 inhabitants (160,000 in its metropolitan area). It is one of the main sea-port cities in Europe. It is located in the Northwest end of Spain. One of its main characteristics are the galleries or view terraces which cover the front of many 19th Century houses which gave the city the name of "Glass City".
Most of our users are from A Coruña and neighbouring towns, so our influence area is quite large.
Our actions aim the promotion of the development and participation in society of people with mental disabilities, as well as counselling to their families and mentors and society, in general.
We carry out our activities mainly from 4 to 8 p.m.
The activities to be carried out by the volunteers in this time will have an educational dimension and will entail an added value for the beneficiaries, due to the importance of counting with the collaboration of a volunteer from another European country in the activities of our local community.

Perfil: • Youth aged between 18 and 30 years
• People willing to work with mentally disabled people
• Communication skills, social abilities, initiative, enthusiasm and creativity.
• Values and ideals of solidarity and European identity.
• Sensitive with gender and opportunities equality.

Candidates will have to show great adaptation capacity, with a great interest in learning, own initiative and organisational skills.

Preferably basic of Spanish language.

Tarefas: Volunteers will support the entertainers and teachers in the workshops and in the activities of the centre. They will collaborate and support users with those tasks which are difficult for them due to their limitations. Youth participating in our project will have the opportunity of learning at different levels: educational, collaborating in an innovating educational project, committed and open to the environment, cultural and linguistic, as they will have the occasion of being in contact and learn, not only Spanish language, but also Galician, and become aware of the existence of different linguistic realities at a European level. All workshops aim the promotion of personal autonomy through the development of different skills, as well as the social integration of the participants. These are some of the activities and workshops carried out: -Cooking Workshop: its aim is the promotion of personal autonomy. One of the aims is that the participants manage autonomy for their daily life (house duties, cooking,...). Theatre and dance workshops: art is a tool to manage social integration and normalisation of people with disabilities, as it favours movement and social skills and creative thinking. People can experiment with theatre and dance. They enable communication and expression and activate understanding, corporal and emotional aspects. -Sewing workshop: this workshop enables users to carry out activities with the hands; it works on fine movements, hand abilities, concentration skills,... Painting and graffiti workshop: volunteers can support peoples needing it and provide their knowledge, in case they have it in this field. Computers workshop: basic editing and word management (Word) for people with disabilities. Literature and press and communication workshop. -Handicrafts workshop: this workshop develops hand skills. We make bracelets with glass beads, varnish and paint wooden boxes, paint trays, make bands for glasses,... Volunteers will support participants to carry out these tasks, as many of them are difficult for them. Toy libraries: the participants use their free time as they wish. They can play table games, read,... Volunteers can participate in the games and contribute to social relations (team games, tolerance of frustration,...).

Horário: The activities take place mainly in the afternoon, from 15th.

Condições: We have a multidisciplinary working team. A coordinator will be responsible for the monitoring of volunteers. Volunteers and mentor will be in touch almost every day. The contact between the coordinator and the mentor is constant. During the first months there will be a weekly follow up from the coordinating organisation.
The team can respond immediately to any request.

From our experience, we know that some times conflicts are unavoidable due to the nature of the experience: young people in a “strange” environment. Our objective is not so much to eliminate conflicts, but to know how to channel them. We have to take into account that we are dealing with young people carrying voluntary tasks in a foreign country. We believe the important thing is that the young person learns to handle it in a positive way and sees the conflict as an opportunity to mature and for personal growth. We base our method in active listening, empathy and joint analysis of the problem, in order to find and negotiate a solution.
If we find no solution to the conflicts or if these go beyond our project, the aim will be to regulate it according to our responsibilities as an EVS host organisation. In these cases we contacted the coordinating organisation or the Spanish National Agency, if necessary, for advise.

Formação: It is very intersting to participate in an EVS project. It leads to commitment of volunteers providing a cultural contribution with people with disabilities, their family and professionals and it is very enriching for volunteers.

The European volunteers confer an added value to the activities in the organisation allowing people with disabilities to get to know young people with different cultures, languages and traditions, influencing them positively and allowing them to enrich from other cultures and knowledge, which is something that otherwise would be unfeasible for them.

We consider that the YiA Programme offers a new vision of international cooperation and cultural diversity. This would be the first time we participate in the YiA Programme, and have long term perspectives, converting linguistic and cultural diversity in a reality of our organisation and an occasion to build European awareness among our users, their family and the staff participating in the project.
We would start as soon as it is possible to participate in a call adapted to our periods of activity. We plan to host 1 volunteer/year for 9-10 months.
