Resumo: The environment is rural and famous for its nature. The landscape of the town is a typical example of the Central Finnish region. It is flat and it has many lakes and large forests. The town is nationally famous for its strawberry farms, which are the single biggest industry in Suonenjoki.
Suonenjoki is connected with the rest of Finland through several daily trains. For example, the express trains between Helsinki and Kuopio stop at Suonenjoki. The presence of such frequent connections is a notable difference between Suonenjoki and other small Finnish towns of similar size. In this sense despite its relatively small population, the town is well-connected. Yet, the volunteer needs to be aware that it is Finnish countryside! This means that it is quite isolated and often very calm - much more than in many places in Central Europe!

The aim of the project is to provide the people opportunities for acquiring international awareness and intercultural skills. In terms of this framework, the volunteer has a wide range of ways to develop him/herself through activities related to the people connected with Vanhamäki. On the other hand the aim is also to integrate the volunteer to the local community and to provide a fruitful atmosphere for him/her to learn different practical skills such as carpentry, farming, leading groups, etc.

Perfil: Ideally, the volunteer would be interested in social and practical manual work. The volunteer is also expected to be willing to learn about Finnish culture and the basics of the language as well as to be willing to share about his/her own culture and national traditions. The volunteer should also be independent, in other words, he/she should be active and well-organised. In a work such as this it is also important to be willing to take initiative. Artistic or musical skills are also an advantage, although not compulsory.

Applicants with educational, social and cultural limitations - such as difficulties created by the location and connectedness of a given country, will be gladly accepted. The personal mentor at work, at freetime and more broadly through the coordinating organisation will provide the volunteer with all the necessary assistance.

Tarefas: The work of the volunteer will consist of two parts:

The volunteer will do practical work (40%). Partly connected with ecological farming: he/she can help in making and packing agricultural products. Naturally, majority of the farm work takes place during summer and autumn. Additionally, there are different workshops in the centre, for example, construction/repair work and animal care. Such practical work varies depending on the season of the year. The volunteer can also take upon some practical tasks in the kitchen or with the trainees, who learn carpentry and furniture restoration. Depending on his/her skills, the volunteer can also enrich Finnish people's culinary experiences by cooking/teaching something from her/his own country.

As the association also functions as a support home for socially excluded youth (under the age of 17), the volunteer will also work with these youngsters - creating activities for them; socializing with them; and participating in their hobbies and free time activities (60%). Additionally, helping them to develop language skills is an important part of this work. This is the main element of the work in during winter and spring.

Horário: The working day is usually 7-8 hours on weekdays. If any extra work or weekend work is required, the centre arranged it with the volunteer and in return he/she can take time off during the week. The volunteer will have the vacations in the same pattern as employees - this will include the public holidays or religious events as well as the two monthly holiday days.

A typical working day during the summer/autumn:
8-10 Helping in the ecological farm
10-11 Taking care of the animals
11-12 Lunch
12-14 Help in the manufacturing of the ecological products
14-16 Help in the farm/help in the children's camps and other activities

A typical working day in the winter/spring:
10-11 Helping in the kitchen or in a workshop (carpentry, repairing etc.)
11-12 Lunch
12-14 Work with the youngsters (language group, studies)
14-16 Activities with the youngsters, socializing
18-20 Going out to hobbies, creating activities for the youngsters or children/groups visiting the centre

Formação: The Centre seeks to provide a surrounding for varied activities in which children, young people and immigrants can learn about living and have an opportunity for a break from the routines of life or alternatively learn to deal with them. Ecological farming, children's home, hostel and camping centre are some of the continuing functions of the centre.

The centre is owned and operated by the national children's foundation, which through varied activities seeks to provide a basis for healthy childhood. The volunteer would assist the centre in its daily tasks that vary greatly, which means that the volunteer would be able to choose based on his/her interests from a range of primarily practical tasks. Having the volunteer at the centre creates opportunities for people connected to the centre to expand their worldview. In this the volunteer will continue in the footsteps of earlier volunteers.
