Resumo: The School is a boarding school for mentally handicapped youth and adults. The school offers 70 places for students and there are more than 100 different short term courses for disabled youth, adults and elderly as well as their families. The school also offers rehabilitation courses such as riding therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy. Some training is aimed at increasing the occupational capacities of the people through, for example, computer literacy training.

The school is largely funded by the Finnish government. The students cover their tuition and accommodation fees personally.

Perfil: Ideally there would be at least two volunteers at the same time. The volunteer should be motivated to work with mentally disabled students and willing to learn about disabled care. The volunteer should also be capable to live in the countryside, very far from city life - the volunteer will have limited possibilities of visiting cities and travel from the location is time consuming and difficult! The volunteer should also be independent enough as well as willing to utilize her/his skills in developing activities for the students.

Tarefas: The main task of the volunteers is to interact with the students during their lessons and leisure time as well as to help them, along with the entire staff, with daily routines. The volunteer will also organise free-time activities for the mentally disabled students. Some of the activities created by volunteers so far have included: a theatre make-up group and a dance course, which led to a dance show. Helping the kitchen staff also belongs to the tasks of the volunteers. Especially in the beginning, as the volunteer doesn't have fluent skills of the Finnish language, working in the kitchen helps the volunteer greatly in assimilating to the school life.

The volunteers can participate in all activities organised by the school, which include sports lessons, horse riding, swimming, art and language classes. He/she will help the teachers and personal assistants of the students. The volunteers will also occasionally have a chance to organise parties and trips for the students. At times, the volunteers will also have a possibility to work with students in assisting with school tasks and helping them in everyday activities.

The school hopes to be able to use the special skills that the volunteers have in order that the volunteer can bring as many new possibilities as possible to the School, for example, by organising intercultural activities, which can vary from sports to arts, music and dance. The final combination of tasks will be decided with each volunteer separately and according to his/her special skills.

Horário: The working time is 7-8 hours per day on 5 days a week, mostly on weekdays. The volunteer will have normal Finnish holidays (two days of holiday per month) like the other employees.

Condições: The volunteer will be living in the dormitory apartments of the school with own bedroom. The kitchen, toilet and shower facilities are shared with another person. It is possible to cook own meals or to eat meals at the school.

Formação: The school will organize some Finnish language tuition, although there are no Finnish courses available at Lehtimäki and the nearest courses are held in Seinäjoki - 65km from the School. Because daily bus connections to Seinäjoki are few, private tutoring may be an option. The volunteer can freely use the swimming pool, gym, and take part in activities organised by the school, like swimming in lakes (even during winter), playing volleyball, etc.

The volunteer will have a possibility to learn about Finnish education system, especially concentrated on special education and students who need extra support. The volunteer will have also a chance to get to know different kind of people and work with disabled people. Also living in a small community will be a learning experience to Finnish culture. Applicants with educational, social and cultural limitations - such as difficulties created by the location and connectedness of a given country, will be gladly accepted. The personal mentor at work, at freetime and more broadly through the coordinating organisation will provide the volunteer with all the necessary assistance.

The School has its own horse stable, swimming pools and other facilities for physical exercise. Such a variety of facilities provides the volunteers with a good possibility: to understand different aspects of Finnish care and specialized training of disabled people; to gain experience of working with disabled people; and to experience the atmosphere of a boarding school located rurally.
