Resumo: It is a school run by the Finnish government for those with physical disabilities. It provides special needs education for young people from the Finnish Capital Region, and beyond, between the ages 6 and 15. The students have been placed to the school based on their disabilities which create special requirements on their education. These disabilities manifest themselves in the form of special perception, motor, or language problems.
However, such disabilities do not mean that the young people do not have the right for the same opportunities in life as any other youth. It is because of this realisation that the School has been seeking to provide its students with a range of possibilities to learn about different cultures. One such way have been international volunteers at the School. EVS volunteers have been welcomed ever since 1998.
Perfil: Ideally, the volunteer would be interested in disabled care. The volunteer is also expected to be willing to learn about Finnish culture and the basics of the language as well as to be willing to share about his/her own culture and national traditions in the school. The volunteer should also be independent, in other words, he/she should be active and well-organised. In a work such as this it is also important to be extroverted and willing to take initiative. Artistic or musical skills are also an advantage, although not compulsory.
Applicants with educational, social and cultural limitations - such as difficulties created by the location and connectedness of a given country, will be gladly accepted. The personal mentor at work, at freetime and more broadly through the coordinating organisation will provide the volunteer with all the necessary assistance.
Tarefas: The volunteer's tasks will have significant inter-cultural aspects in them. Often in the activities carried out by him/her, a creative attitude is needed. An important part of the work is socializing with the children at the school, in other words, in being their friend. It is important that the volunteer is willing to introduce his/her own culture at different lessons and occasions in order to offer the children with glimpses of the wider world. The host organisation will enable the volunteer to make the most of his/her personal skills (artistic, musical, etc.) and in this way to bring new and fresh ideas to school life. The volunteer will also be able to help in organising special events such as a Christmas party, visits to a museum, an art exhibition, etc.
Helping the staff in providing the basic care is another central aspect of the job. Many children need a lot of physical and practical help in moving around, eating and other daily functions. Helping the staff at the school dormitory in basic care of students is another aspect of such practical helping. This is not a daily aspect of the work, but help is occasionally needed.
Horário: A typical day varies according to the school schedule and planned activities. It could be, for example:
8:00 -10:00 - Helping in the English language lessons in the computer class
10:00-11:45 - Participating and helping in the sport classes with floorball, swimming gym, etc.
11:45-12:15 - Lunch
12:15-13:00 - Helping in the math class
13:00-14:00 - Helping in the art class with painting, drawing, clay works, computer animations, etc.
The volunteer will have the same working hours as is set in the weekly schedule for the students. The schedule will also provide a framework for the duties, which the volunteer is expected to do each day. S/he will work 30 hours a week: 6 hours a day, 5 days a week. The work days begin either at 8 or 9 o'clock depending on the schedule. Work is usually on weekdays only. Lastly, the volunteer has normal Finnish holidays, two days each month, like all the other employees.
Condições: A mentor will also be nominated for the volunteer. This mentor will support the volunteer in her adaptation process and help her in possible conflict situations.
The volunteer will be living in a Finnish host family. In this way she/he will have a unique opportunity to get an insight to Finnish culture, language and habits. The volunteer will be a family member with same rights and responsibilities that another family members.
