Resumo: It is a centre for education and training is a college providing education both in a Folk high school and a secondary level vocational school. Students are both youngsters and adults and some of them need special support in their studies. Most students study in the areas of social and health care, child care and education and family welfare.

Preparatory and rehabilitating training is offered for the people with special needs, who are mainly young from 16 till 25 years old. They receive vocational training also in the area of domestic services. In the College it is also possible to complete one´s primary school education. The college is a boarding school, and the aim is to integrate students also in the residence during leisure time activities.

Students with special needs have severe learning difficulties. Problems can appear in hearing, speaking, seeing, intelligence, concentrating etc. Diagnosis can be for example mental deficiency, dysfasia, ADHD, problems with mental health etc. All students don't have any specific diagnosis, but they prefer study in small group with support and assistance.

The volunteer will work with students with special needs both during daytime and some evenings. He/she will work as an assistant or co-worker with teachers, instructors and staff of the residence.

Perfil: Work with students and many teachers and residential staff members requires good social and communication skills and freedom from prejudices. Allthough these skills will probably develop also during the volunteer period. The volunteer should also have interest to work with students, who need special assistance. Their disabilities are very different kind and every one is an individual. The volunteer needs to have patience and also self-initiative to get to know the students and their needs. Active attitude helps also to build other connections in Pieksämäki and the college ground. When the volunteer gets to know the places and people, she/he can also start organising own activities according her/his skills and interest.

Tarefas: The main tasks of the volunteer is to assist the teachers and help students with special needs in the classroom and everyday life. Depending of the annual students group, the volunteer can assist one group (8-10 people) or join the group, where the help is mostly needed. This can be for example handicraft, kitchen, sport, computer or math classes. Sometimes there is a need to help a person in a wheelchair or accompany someone to and from the bus to the classroom.

Working hours are usually 8.15 - 14.15 or 15.15, sometimes shorter according to the time-table of the group the volunteer is working with. Friday afternoon is often free. He/she can concentrate for example training kitchen or handicraft work. Students are allowed to stay at the College dormitory every second week-end during the semester, and then the volunteer is asked to help in serving the Saturday and Sunday breakfasts and dinners. To compensate that work volunteer is free on weeks 42 and 9 (holidays weeks also for students).

Evening activities are for example floorball, karaoke, riding and swimming. There is a swimming hall near the college. Other activities according to volunteer's skills are welcome with pleasure. If volunteer is interested she/he can organise different free-time activities for the students, for example language courses.

Condições: The organization will take care of the funding application, reporting and the finances. Also they act as an extra mentor for the volunteer and support the host project during the activity period. The cordinating organization is also a contact point for interested EVS-candidates. They answer all the inquiries and do the pre-selection of the volunteers. The final decision is always done by the host project itself. In the selection process the motivation and interests of the volunteer play an important role. Also the volunteer who have less possibilities for international experiences are given priority. All the interested candidates are informed about the outcome of the selection process.

Formação: Internationalisation is one of the core areas of expertise in European working life. As being a vocational college we want to offer our students and staff possibilities to contacts with people from different cultures and practice their language skills. In other words we wish to be a multicultural learning environment.
