Resumo: The project takes part within the context of the activity of the environmental association Legambiente in Lombardia, integrating the programme of works of environmental maintenance and improvement of the quality of the environment. These projects are run in the network of natural areas of Legambiente (Retenatura) and ERSAF (Public Council for Services to Agriculture and Forests), with which Legambiente cooperates. Moreover the project is intended to support the programme of Legambiente voluntary projects in Lombardy (VolontariAmbiente - Volunteerism for Environment).
Legambiente Lecco has hosted both EVS and Short Term EVS volunteers since 2004, promoting their integration within the activities of Legambiente Lecco Onlus helping the development of our Centres: carrying on important interventions of restoration and valorisation of natural areas, raising the awareness on voluntary service and active citizenship values among the volunteers and the local community. Everything done with the benefit of the formal and non-formal educational activities (manual outdoor works of environmental maintenance, active participation in environmental education activities, role of environmental messenger of the association).
This Group EVS project, which duration is 6 months for 6 European volunteers, will take place in the “Case nella Foresta” (Houses in the Forests) of Prim’Alpe (Canzo, Como), Bagni di Masino (Val Masino, Sondrio) and Valvestino (Turano, Brescia), all of them located in the middle of protected areas. All these buildings belong to ERSAF and Legambiente is in charge to manage them also promoting different activities which aim is learn to
the citizens the eco-friendly life-style.

Description of project

In the first two-weeks all the volunteers will stay in Prim’Alpe, a Centre for Environmental Education, in order to follow the training (language and work skills related to the activities, association aims…). After this training period, during the summer period the volunteer will be addressed to the
three Centres when Legambiente carries out activities like “Nature Holidays” for kids and workcamps. Two volunteers will go to Bagni di Masino, two to Valvestino, two will stay mainly in Prim’Alpe. In the last period (september/november) the volunteers will come back to Prim’Alpe to finish their service and do the final evaluation.

Perfil: Boys and girls with interest in Environment and rural life. The candidate should consider that the areas of the Service are isolated from big towns and located in mountainous areas. There will be anyway the chance to move during the days-off. The volunteers must be self-motivated, dynamic, versatile, flexible, with self-initiative, creative, with handwork skills, willing to take on new challenges, opened to work and with people of all
backgrounds and cultures; enthusiastic to participate in the project; mature to work, also in the outdoors, and to relate also with groups of disadvantaged people; willing to develop new activities and with sense of responsibility. Volunteers with previous experience with children or workcamps and a little knowledge of Italian are welcome.

Tarefas: Help keeping cleaned and functional the accommodations of Legambiente and keeping in order the surrounding area: the accommodations of volunteers are in public buildings and Legambiente, through operators and volunteers, is in charge of the ordinary and extraordinary maintenance of the buildings themselves and of the surroundings (keeping in order the green public).
Keep functional the vegetable garden: the volunteers will help farming in the small vegetable garden in Prim’Alpe, that is used as food source but, mainly, as place where to lead environmental activities with children.
Support for Touristic promotion: both Prim’Alpe and Bagni di Masino Centres are buildings related to an info point and museum of ERSAF, where the volunteers will give information to the tourists and will lead them in the visit. Moreover, the volunteers will give a hand in the organisation of events, with the aim of valorisation of the territory, and Legambiente’ informative campaigns (like Clean up the World) in order to arise the awareness among the population about environmental problems.
Help the operators of Legambiente leading activities: Legambiente Lecco operates through workcamps (teenager, over18, international and national), environmental education (with children during “Nature Holisday”, schools or groups) and informative campaigns. The target of population of every activity is various, from primary school children to over 18 volunteers of workcamps. Volunteers will support the Legambiente
operators leading these activities.
Personal project: the volunteers will be asked to take initiative promoting a personal project (that can be individual or group project), in accordance with the mission of the association.

Condições: Over the past years, the operators of Legambiente Lecco have faced different situations acquiring experience and skills necessary to cope properly with these situations. The support of the Mentor and continuous monitoring of the operators of Legambiente is a key element for the success of the project. Surely, in fact, it's necessary to adopt mechanisms that can prevent risky situations and crises, starting first with an appropriate training of volunteers. The moments of training and education to environmental voluntary service in Legambiente are run, primarily but not exclusively, at the beginning of the project; both formal (on arrival reception, workshops about safety rules to keep during the work time and first aid, seminars) and informal, or during carrying out activities, paying the due attention to the cooperation and coexistence among volunteers. Moreover, is constantly monitored he acquisition both of skills in the use of tools and the maintenance of environmentally sustainable attitudes, going to correct erroneous attitudes or habits.
mainly the risk prevention is worked out with:
- Specific training as workcamp co-leaders and as animators, which includes aspects of crisis management, group dynamics between adults, adolescents and children, tasks and roles of youth, non-violent communication, etc
- Conception of environmental maintenance jobs in accordance with specific safety standards and practices, incorporating the use of personal protective equipment and proper preparation on safety rules;
- Continuous monitoring of the workload, to avoid excessive effort and stress;
- Diversification of activities in order to avoid monotony in work, always offering new incentives;
- Precise scheduling of summer activities, where the workload is generally higher, which allows us to treat sustainable events program, identifying appropriate periods of rest or less intense commitment.
