Impressions of EVS volunteer Elisa from Norway who is volunteering in this Day care center now:
“If you wish to work with children then this is a good choice. You have to be very patient, especially in the beginning. It is not only difficult for you to adapt to the situation, but also for the children. Because of this it might be an advance to have some experience from working with children thinking about the fact that it might help you to understand them more, but it is not something that you need to have. What you need is to be open minded, and willing to try to see things from the children’s point of view.
The language difficulties do not make it any easier, but luckily the workers are very nice, and they help you on each step of the way. They are always friendly and supportive, and they make you feel like home. They also engage you in the work in a good way, and help you to understand the children. And when you finally connect with the children it is all worth it. They make you smile from the inside and out!”

Perfil: As we work with handicapped children volunteer should not to be afraid of that and should be ready for new experience in education of children with some dissabilities.The project appeals to the teaching of Catholic Church and Christian values, so it would be nice that these values would be acceptable for volunteers, but we are open to every young person. As we work with children under the age of 7 years, work demands lots of responsibillity, we are able to accept volunteer, who are older than 18 years.
We are open to all the responsible organizations which are interested in cooperation with us.

Tarefas: The day center is for the children of the preschool age (from 2 to 7 years). Two groups for children are working every working day and are constant. The pedagogic is based on catholic principles.
The main tasks of volunteers:
•to look after the children (to help them to eat, to dress, to go outside)
•to play with children
•to create and participate in art projects with children
•to participate in a group process where children are actively communicating
•to participate in meetings with educators working in the group
•to look after the common order (to put dishes to the dish washing-machine or to clean the room)

Horário: Preliminary hours:
8.30 - 9.30 welcoming children, prayer, breakfast
9.30 - 10. 10.30 the main activity of the day (look below)
10.30 - 11.00 preparation for going to the yard: to help children dressing up
11.00 - 12.00 playing outside/ preparing the group room for the meals and resting time (making the beds, clothing the tables, carrying the meals from the kitchen)
12.00 - 12.30 dressing off, washing arms, relaxing, reading stories
12.30 - 13.00 lunch as a part of education/a child care (helping children to have lunch, giving them a nice example, rules)
13.00 - 13.30 brushing teeth, WC, helping children to undress, unclothing the tables
13.30 - 15.30 the time to have a rest, to sleep/ helping with these children, who has difficulties to have a rest, calming them, staying with bigger children, playing, preparing for school exercisers
15.30 16.30 getting up, helping children to dress up and making up the beds
16.30 - 16.30 playing with children, clothing tables for the dinner, carrying the dinner
16.30 - 16. 45 evening circle/ reflection of the day (rounding off the day with a talk with children)
16.45 - 17.15 dinner as a part of education/a child care (helping children to have lunch, giving them a nice example, rules)
17.15 - 17.30 playing with the children
17.30 - 18.00 tidying up the group room

The main activities of the day depends on each day of week (it could have some changes each school year):
Monday - sports/ choreography
Tuesday - theatre/arts
Wednesday - music
Thursday - Catholic catechesis ("Talk with God")
Friday - free games day

Formação: The organization has been a host organization already for 7 years. It has successfully been hosting long and short term EVS volunteers seven years in a row (usually hosting one volunteer for a year). It has a great experience and wants to keep being a host organization for many reasons:
- it is a great stimulus for a organization for a change from inside;
- the experience of participating in the EVS projects has been useful for both volunteers and organizations;
- a volunteer is a big help for a social worker, as well as a "big brother or sister" for children;
- the volunteer brings his/her differences and similarities that is always worth to learn;
- international experience for workers and children; great chance to enhance the motivation to learn a foreign language, to know more about other culture;
- to use the EVS as a tool of non formal education;
- a successful partnership with other similar organization (both local and foreign)
- we think that in this day care center children and their parents will get bigger feeling of inclusion into society by communication with foreigner, they could learn English, get to know about other country from the first lips, spend time with someone, who is different in the culture.

We think, that we could offer for young person from other country an opportunity to learn a lot about himself through work with less opportunities children. We involve the young person into the group of Lithuanian volunteers who participate in structuralized non formal learning process. Part of our staff went though such experience in other countries and grew up a lot through it. That's why we would like to offer such an oppurtunity for the other people as well.
We see that for young people is becoming important to have intercultural experience if they want to integrate into labour market in Lithuania. We want to offer an opportunity for young Lithuanian volunteers who work in day care center to gain experience of international team work.
We are willing to increase quality of our work. It is very important to get feed back about our work from totally other perspectives, culture, norms. That helps to grow and change things in the project.
We try to offer safe space for young Lithuanian volunteers to make their various ideas real in the project. We hope that in cooperation with European volunteer our young people will show more initiative and local community, children will get new quality events and actions.
We think that with European volunteer children from day care center will get more attention, and could be treated more individually, what would help them to integrate into positive groups of their age children in local community.
