Resumo: Educational centre for disabled children.
Impressions of EVS volunteer Cindy from France who was volunteering in this centre from the beginning of September 2010 till the beginning of March 2011 (6 months):
"working at the school for disabled children is quite nice. At the beginning wasn't so easy as only few people are able to speak english. Also some children are not able to speak or even to move. The first step was a long observation process of the teacher work to indentify the needs of the children. but thanks to lithuanian lessons and the friendly people working there, you can be a real part of the working team.“
Impressions of EVS volunteer Marisa from Portugal who is volunteering in the centre now:
The main purpose of this center is to improve the quality of life of children with mental disability and their family. We are two volunteers, me and Filip, who participate and collaborate in different activities with the teachers, for example in music and ceramic lessons. We support professionals with the personal hygiene and eating of the children. During the lessons, we can develop new ideas and our own projects. Most of all, inspire and be inspired with this new experience. EVS offers personal and cultural enrichment for us. A volunteer should have this skills or attitudes:
- Motivation and interest to participate in the project;
- Responsability, tolerance;
- Initiative skills and capacity to make proposals.“
Impressions of EVS volunteer Filip from Czechia who is volunteering in the centre now:
"If you like working with children who can surprise you every time or at least if you suppose so (because I also didn’t have experiences with disabled children before), this centre is a good choice for you. But be prepared that you will have to be very patient and sometimes you will be very tired after your work, on the other side don’t be afraid that nobody will help you because staff of the centre is very nice. You should know that children have diverse kinds of handicap and most of them have diverse needs as well.
There is an advantage if you start to learn Lithuanian, because not too many workers can speak English here (but probably you would attend a class with a person who can speak this language) and the same applies to the children. There is also possible to speak Russian with many people here and some of them also can speak Polish. But I have to admit I don’t learn Lithuanian too intensively. : )
There is also an advantage if you are at least a little creative and active, because you will help with a decoration and drawing among other things. There will be no obstacles if you want to use your ideas.
For this work is much more important your personality than your skills.“
Perfil: We have no special requirements for the volunteers. The most important is that a volunteer would like to help a child and not be afraid of severe disabilities. We want a volunteer to understand that children who come in our centre usually don't' walk, speak or perceive the world the way it is, that is why it's very important to be tolerant, patient and don't be afraid of people who are different from us.
Tarefas: The main role of volunteer would be assistance to the children, that means to help a child in every situation as well as helping the child in every activity he/she is involved in, f.i. to help a child during lessons, to help to put on clothes and to eat, to play together, to assist in various other activities, to become a friend of a child.. What is more, a volunteer could take an active part in organization every day life, help to organize some events, as well as organize any activity or programme he/she is interested in. Anyway, we are open to every new idea and volunteer is welcome to suggest or take part in any activity he/she is interested in.
Formação: Our organisation has been participating in EVS projects since 2005, so we have 4 years experience working with EVS volunteers. There have been volunteers from France, Germany, Georgia, and Spain. Moreover, there are many Lithuanian volunteers helping us. Participating in EVS projects is very worth - wile, because we not only get new ideas, suggestions but also international experience. Volunteers are always very important and appreciated in our organization, that is why we not only want to get something valuable from them, but also to give them as much positive experience and ways of learning as it is possible. Volunteers in our organization have a good possibility to obtain social skills, or develop it. They learn responsibility by working with disabled children, and they can show or improve their creativity in different workshops, excursions, and camps.
