Resumo: Our action is directed to people with mental disabilities, offering support with:
School: Students aged between 6 and 18 and the possibility of completing education until they are 20. Aim: manage self-autonomy of students.
-Vocational centre: for people aged between 20 and 50 years old. Aim: manage the social integration and integration in the job market of our target group.
Day Centre: for adults with support needs in the following fields: communication, personal care, life at home, social abilities, health and security, functional school contents, leisure, work,... Main aim: personal autonomy
Other services where volunteers participate:
- Water therapy service, support in changing rooms
- Maintenance and sport activities
- Leisure service, accompaniment to users to favour their integration.

- With knowledge and/or experience regarding mental disabilities and/or aware of this collective.
- Willing to participate under our regulations and ethic codes.
Tarefas: Role of EVS volunteers:
- They will work under the intern regulations of the organisation, as well as its codes and values, with people with mental disabilities and the world around them.
Regulations, code and values:
- Improve the quality of life of people with mental disability and their family.
- Achieve that the users live an honourable life
- Promote dignity, the individual value of people, equal opportunities and integration in society.
- The specific rules of volunteers will be followed by EVS volunteers with specific protocoles. Some specific rules:
" Support all users so they can freely express themselves (opinions, critics,...)
" Respect the opinion of the users
" Attend the users individually and their family
" Take into account the individual characteristics and differences of each person
" Repel physical or psychological punishments
" Respect the right of privacy, especially when the users can't defend it.
" Confidenciality: keep secret the personal details of the users.
" Support users to take decisions, make plans, choose.
" Promote self-determination of users
" Ask users about everything affecting them.
" Decisions shall be taken according to the benefit of their interst.
" Inform users about the existing support and actions to improve their quality of life.
" Respect the users and take their opinions, wishes and social environment into account (there will be no kind of discrimination).
" Promote self-confidence of users and their acceptance in society.
Support, proposals and creation of activities by EVS volunteers
GENERAL
- Support, suggest and crate activities in our organisation with the aim of improving the quality of life of our users and their family.
SPECIFIC
- Support in the different educational activities (music therapy, social abilities,...)
- Support with punctual activities (performances, outings, accompaniment to specific activities,...)
- Support at workshops (leather, carpentry, handling)
- Support at the changing rooms for water therapy. Tasks: accompaniment to users in changing rooms, personal autonomy, development, attention, hygiene and clothing.
- Accompaniment outside the centre (in order to work inclusion outside the association).
- Support in the planned leisure activities (Saturday afternoons): trips, camps, educational outings, parties, weekend trips.
- Support training to families, participating in the Nanny Service.
- Any other support related to the activities and daily life at the centre.
- Collaborate, suggest and create leisure activities for special celebrations (Carnivals, Christmas, end of school year,...)
Horário: From January to Decembre; August, holidays. Participation: 30/35 h/week (including specific and language training), 2 continuous free days/week.
Condições: Accommodation: in a flat shared with other European or local volunteers
All volunteers have a civil responsibility insurance covering all their activity.
EVS volunteers will also be covered by this insurance during their activity.
Volunteers will regularly meet with the mentor of the activities and a supervisor of the project (Asociación Xuvenil Abertal, coordinating organisation).
Many matters shall be taken into account to avoid risks:
- Provide volunteers with appropriate support throughout the project (this includes sending and host organisations).
- Fluid communication between the organisations (host and sending)
- Clearly define the role and tasks of volunteers.
- Training, potential problems, illnesses, alergies,... shall be taken into account when organising tasks.
- The individual needs of volunteers will also be taken into account for food and accommodation; age and sex of volunteers will also be taken into account.
- Health and security of volunteers will also be taken into account by the person responsible of the project; EVS volunteers will be provided with the information, training and means.
- The person responsible will take into account these measures for possible changes or improvements.
- EVS volunteers are responsible for their own security and health, as well as for that of the people affected by their actions at work, according to their training and the instructions received.
In case of emergency, illness, accident,...an appropriate protocol will be followed (known by volunteers since their arrival).
