Resumo: The EVS project activities focus on the major sea turtle nesting areas of Zakynthos (Laganas Bay), Western Peloponnesus (Kyparissia Bay) and Crete (Rethymno or Chania) and for ARCHELON's Rescue Centre in Athens.

Perfil: ARCHELON has been a volunteer-based organization since its very beginning. Many of the day-to-day duties are carried out by dedicated volunteers, increasing immensely the quantity and quality of work produced. Having volunteers undertaking routine duties allows the more experienced personnel to focus their attention towards lobbying with the local, national and international authorities for the implementation of protection measures that can ensure the long term protection of sea turtles and their habitats.
ARCHELON benefits directly from the presence of international volunteers. Their foreign language skills are useful in raising awareness about sea turtles and the dangers they face among tourists, thus increasing the total number of people ARCHELON informs each year. Moreover international volunteers tend to stay for longer periods of time, their placement taking up the majority of their time, while greek volunteers stay for shorter periods and usually their time with ARCHELON is on top of their other responsibilities (work etc.). This means that international volunteers can undertake further responsibilities and within a very short period are able to work independently with very little supervision.

Tarefas: The Society's activities include monitoring of turtle populations, active management on nesting beaches, lobbying and raising of public awareness. Furthermore the Society provides data and scientific information to the European Union, the Council of Europe, the Greek Government and local authorities and communities.
