Resumo: The host organization is a primary and secondary school for pupils aged 6–14. It is a small school, with all together 45 pupils, situated in the countryside in Austria. The organization is a private school with „Öffentlichkeitsrecht“, which means that we are legally like any other public school, with the only exception that the association financially sustaining the school is private: a registered society, „Verein“. We are a parents` initiative, and, not only financially dependent on the involvment and honorary participation of the parents.

The organization is the only school following a reformist education in the region. We teach according to Maria Montessori (in primary school) and Peter Petersen`s Jenaplan in secundary school. It is in secondary school that a volunteer is needed in the first place.

Central ideas of our pedagogy are a holistic, project-oriented, interdisciplinary and mixed-age education, learner-centered, action-oriented and eager to keep up the joy of learning.

It is due to the learner-centered way of teaching, that we are looking for an encouraged and pedagogically interested person to support us - respectively our pupils. We are looking for a volunteer who loves working with children (teenagers), and who is interested in helping and supporting them with their questions and assignments. Who is eager to support pupils and teachers in easy assignments like gardening, cooking, arts, handcraft and others. Who will like to tell and teach us about her or his own cultural background, and maybe even his or her language.

Another reason why wish to have a European volunteer among us: Our school is very openminded, our teachers come from or used to live and work in other European countries, BUT due to the fact that we as a school are situated in the middle of the countryside, „Europe“ is not part of our pupils` everyday life. They don`t really have opportunities to get in touch with people from foreign countries and cultures.

That`s what we would like to change with the help of the Youth Volunteering Organisation. We would like our pupils to really get in touch with Europe! We would like to open their eyes to the fact that nowadays we don`t live in isolated countries any more– and that our real borders are those in our minds.

Perfil: We are definitely looking for somebody interested in education and in working with children. Apart from this precondition we are open to host anyone from any place in Europe.
Age: 17-30

Tarefas: In our secondary school we have 3 groups : The 10-11 years old, the 11-12 years old, and the 13-14 years old. A volunteer will be able to get to know and work with any of the three classes, but will especially support the youngest of them. As our pedagogical methods demand a lot of self-determination, it is the youngest who need most support.

Concretely, a volunteer will support the teachers and pupils in easy tasks. Our time table looks like the following: The three main subjects German, Mathmetics and English last 110 minutes and are devided into a part where the teacher is presenting something new, and a part where the pupils independently work on tasks and exercises. The second part is called „Wochenplan“ – „weekly plan or schedule“, and it means that the pupils are given exercises by the teachers, which they have to finish within one week. In this period they can choose which one of their tasks they work on, they can also choose the place they want to work at, or if they want to work alone, in groups or in pairs. There is always a teacher present to support wherever support is needed. And it is here that a volunteer will be needed. What we can offer to volunteers in terms of learning opportunities: She or he will learn a lot from the pedagogical point of view: She or he will learn about alternative ways of education and teaching. Once in a while she or he will also be able to work with the youngest (6-10) and to get to know Montessori education. We can offer a good and thorough experience for somebody who wants to work with children and who is interested in reformist education. Plus: We can offer our volunteer to learn and practice German at our school.
