Resumo: The City Hostel is a busy international key hostel (180 beds in 40 rooms with 90-100% occupancy May through September and 65% on a yearly basis) within the Hostelling International movement owned by the Association, an independent non-Governmental, non-for-profit association working with the HI vision coloured by local needs and interests regarding social and quality/environmental issues. It is located in the city’s green park, next door to the recreational swim and sport facilities.

The Downtown Hostel is the City Hostel’s sister hostel. It has 68 beds in 19 rooms, it is very centrally located, hosts music events and works in collaboration with film and music festivals as an off-venue site.

The Hostel is the newest addition of the association and will open in spring 2013. It has 104 beds in 19 rooms and it is located on the main shopping street and within 5 minutes walking distance from main touristic attractions. Loft Hostel has benefited from the beginning from the experience gained in the first two Hostels concerning environmental aspects.

The aim within the leading team of the organization has been to make the Reykjavik Hostels a model of excellence in the field of quality management and a leader in environmental management. We have worked constantly on developing and implementing the Hostels’ own Environmental Policy and methods in all daily work for many years now.
It has now come the moment when the aim developed to a broader perspective, which includes active participation in the community and cultural side.

The organization is concerned about the environment and the subjects of sustainable tourism, sustainable development and use of resources. An environmental agenda has been developed and the hostel aims at passing knowledge to guests and members of the local community on an even broader scale. One of the ways in which the youth hostels differ from just any budget accommodation provider, is that there exists the aim to create a "green" and environment-aware atmosphere in the youth hostels, promoting in the same time the principles of sustainable tourism as whole, by actively engaging in the local community and have a stronger impact at the local level.

The Youth Hostels are establishments that provide budget accommodation, promoting the movement of youth throughout the world, with emphasis upon encounters and understanding between people. With a tradition of intercultural exchange and the practice of a communal lifestyle, youth hostels exist as places of learning, listening and discovery. Moreover, youth hostels offer an environment particularly well suited to school groups with collective dormitories, classrooms/meeting rooms and a board service.

Perfil: We would like volunteers applying for this project to have a strong motivation and dedication for working inside an international group on mostly environmental and responsible tourism educational and practical activities. Volunteer’s enthusiasm, creativity and interest in order to engage with people, to work in team but also willingness to accept personal responsibilities are highly appreciated. A readiness to work with flexibility in changing or developing situations is essential, as well as an ability to occasionally work in high-pressure situations.

Particular interest in environmental issues, in sustainability, culture and responsible travelling might be very useful when developing the activities and training staff members. English language skills are of a big advantage, while Icelandic is not a requirement. Artistic skills or digital competences (knowldege of Microsoft office, Photoshop or similar programms) are also highly appreciated but not mandatory.

Gender is of no importance, but volunteers have to be between 18 and 30 years old and ready to live one exciting year in Iceland, in a daily international environment.
Ethnic groups, religion, sexual orientation or political opinion are not taken into account.
There are no special or specific qualifications or practical skills needed, as training will be given and constant support offered.
As mentioned above, the volunteers will share indeed the project, but they have the freedom to distribute the tasks according to their interests starting the second phase of the project. Still, all tasks will be done in close cooperation with the other volunteer, so they can consult and support each other.

Tarefas: In case this part of the project is being carried out, the volunteers will have the chance to join the Quality&Sustainability Manager during the annual audit. They will visit several holders of the Hostels logo and the hostels who aim for it, review their environmental work, bring suggestions and help the hosts to develop it further. Firstly the volunteer will get an introduction of the hostels from HI-Iceland‘s Quality Manager in quality and sustainability and then will visit the hostels. This trip will be split in two parts, so both volunteers can join at different times.

After having visited the hostels, compared them and seen which solutions and ideas work well, a final report with suggestions will be done for each of the visited hostel in close collaboration with the Quality Manager.

If after the first visit, it is considered that some hostels need some special attention, the volunteers will then spend more time at the location (between 1-2 weeks), in order to help the host to improve its environmental work. This could e.g. include helping the host to review supplies used for cleaning and daily running of the hostel, review and improve waste sorting facilities for guests and waste management, improve local signage and information on the closest surroundings of the hostel and greener ways of travelling, encourage the guests to minimize the impact of their stay and travels on the environment.
