Resumo: The office is located in the ecological centre so it enables our organisation to cooperate with other local organisations on the topic of environment. The centre, where the office of our organisation is located, joins together a range of ecological, educational and cultural activities, enabling to introduce visitors to a variety of ecological issues, not only on theoretical level but also, importantly, on the practical level. The centre runs a big number of environmental non-formal educational programs for schools and nursery schools groups and carries out free time activities for wide public on regular basis. It is wide, picturesque area with buildings, farms, gardens, orchard, forest and small ponds.

The goal of this centre is a creation of quality and a stable establishment for increasing knowledge about ecological issues in a region with a very high population density. The centre is surrounded by apartment blocks and offers to the people living there the access to nature. This first-of-its-kind project in Prague tries to fill a need for hands-on education, involving children and stimulating their interest through direct contact with nature. A series of successes and a growing interest in activities continue to demonstrate the need for this initiative. Directly at the centre, there is a bio-shop offering among others also products of Czech ecological farmers. A reconstructed gothic granary is used as an exhibition place and also as a supplementary classroom for educational programs. One room has been reconstructed as a student laboratory. A nice and new hostel is available. There is the Mothers club offering a program for mothers and their pre-school aged children. In the autumn 2004, there was a kindergarten orientated on the environmental education of pre-school age children opened. All employees and volunteers take care of eight hectares of vegetable and flower gardens, potatoes and corn fields, fruit orchards, pastures, wetlands, … and of chicken, goats, sheep, rabbits, a pig, horses, and many other animals. There operates also a Horse Riding Club. Many old Czech traditional celebrations (Christmas, Easter, harvest home, etc.), concerts of folk music, workshops on traditional crafts for public are organised here and are a great opportunity for the organization EVS volunteers to learn about Czech traditions and history as the volunteers take active part in the activities of the centre.

As we have been hosting EVS volunteers already since 2001, we gathered very important experience with facilitating a stay of foreign young people in the Czech Republic. Arrival to a new community with different traditions, speaking different language can be connected also with a cultural shock. That is why the most important thing at the beginning is to create pleasant conditions for the volunteer's stay and the surrounding of the YEE office makes it easier.

The work in the YEE's office will be implemented with the help of the Secretary General, the full time worker, and coordinators. Employers always try to create friendly atmosphere in the office.

The accommodation is arranged in single rooms in the area of the city. It is very beneficial because the volunteers can join the young people living in the the city any time they wish but on the other hand they are not disturbed in the case they would look for rest and peace. One of the rooms is located in the same building where the YEE office is and the second one in the hostel. Volunteer have a lot of freedom but must respect basic rules of a hostel and the centre. Our experience shows that the local community accepts our EVS volunteers in a very positive way, what helps a lot in their adaptation, especially in the first phase of the project. The city is easily accessible by public transport (busses and trams very close, metro approx. 15 min. by bus), it takes approx. 30-45 minutes to get to the city centre from here. There is a big grocery store just across the street and one shopping centre 15 minutes walking away, with cinemas, restaurants, shops, post office… There is as well a large park-forest area with a dam very close to the centre, where it is possible to swim in the summer and ice-skate in the winter.

Perfil: Youth and Environment hosts two volunteers for the period of 12 months. They usually come at the similar period so that they could learn together and support themselves in the learning process. The working language in the office is English so we ask for a basic knowledge of English language (both written and spoken), so that volunteers can actively participate in all running debates. We are looking for persons that have at least basic knowledge of computer (in the office she/he will learn how to use various programmes to make web design, layout) and willing to work inside of the office and outside in the ecological centre. YEE welcomes volunteers with interest and/or experience in environment, international movement of European youth, intercultural learning, EU issues. YEE offers its EVS volunteers good conditions for work and life, a lot of space for creativity and a chance to see results of his/her work, friendly atmosphere, regular lessons of the Czech language, suitable accommodation and boarding, personal support of a mentor. We invite people who wish to gain working experience in the office of an environmental international youth organisation, meet many new friends from different European countries and feel like doing something useful for environment. We are open to cooperate with any sending organisation.

The selection of the volunteer is done between the international board of YEE, the Secretary General, other employers and the EVSes that are in this moment in the office.

Tarefas: At the beginning of the project we offer our volunteers enough time to get to know the organisation, activities that we prepare, the structure, plans, project, etc. We always try to figure out together with volunteers which of the suggested working activities would be the best for each volunteer and we prepare a working plan. We stress that what the volunteer does is useful for the organisation, the ecological centre and also for the volunteer him/herself in his/her personal development.

The project of the volunteers is spited in three main parts:

The first part is the help in Youth and Environment Europe (YEE) activities connected with campaigns, training courses, seminars, web page and publications. Concrete tasks offered to volunteers to choose of are for example: networking with our member organisations, creation or collection of interesting articles for YEE publications, publications’ design, updating of the web page, campaign preparations, taking pictures for publications... He/she will have also the opportunity to attend and represent YEE in all the events and projects along Europe that we are taking part or organising.

The second part is to help in the practical activities in the Ecological Centre. These part of the project will help our volunteers to enter into the local community. The organization organises educational programs on the topic of nature for children, handcrafts, traditions’ presentations and cultural events. There are a lot of programs that are carried out, as bread baking, home-soap production, wooden basket production, help with the animals, practical help in the garden and orchard, support by preparations of cultural events, expositions... Some of the cultural events are Carnival, Christmas, Bio market, the Day of the Earth, etc.

The third part is the volunteer's own project. We give time to develop their own project with the help of YEE. The possibilities are quite open, depend on volunteer’s interests but should be connected with nature/environment. We offer to the volunteers the possibility to develop their own idea about activities which would help him/her in their future job or study. We always give time to think and the personal project and try to help. Some examples of personal projects are: collaboration with Radio Prague; creation of a pictures archive; web design; collaboration in the kindergarten; activities related to the club created; development of interpretative panels; youth exchange…

Every Monday we have a small meeting in the office when we plan the activities for the following week and the volunteers can express their interest to participate in planned activities.

Among learning opportunities that our project offers can be found skills such as: learning web design, publications layout, improving computer skills in general, learning how to manage events, how an organisation is run, handcraft abilities, taking care of animals and/or garden, learning Czech, etc.
